Bulldogs cruise past St. Edmond in 3 sets

After dropping three matches last week, the Algona Bulldogs volleyball squad got back on the winning track with a North Central Conference victory over the St. Edmond Gaels in three straight sets.
In the opening game, the red-and-black started fast by racing out to an early advantage of 11-3 and never looked back in winning that set by the score of 25-16.

Golden Bears control district

ALGONA—It is just two weeks into district football play, but Bishop Garrigan took control of the Class A, district three race with a hard-fought 22-20 victory over a stubborn Belmond-Klemme squad at Conway Field.
With their second straight win over a ranked opponent, the black-and-gold still alone atop the district with a perfect 2-0 mark with games left against North Union (2-4, 1-1), West Fork (3-3, 0-2) and G-T/R-A (2-4, 1-1).

BGHS 3rd at Invite

Bishop Garrigan won three of five matches to place third in the BGHS Invitational held in Algona on Saturday, Sept. 22. Lake Mills won the tournament with a perfect 5-0 mark and did not lose a set while North Iowa finished second at 4-1 on the day.
The Golden Bears opened the day with a 21-12 and 21-9 victory over West Hancock, but dropped their next two matches to Lake Mills 13-21 and 11-21 along with a 22-20, 16-21 and 9-15 loss to North Iowa.

Homecoming Blast

Algona scored on the opening play of the game and never slowed down in a wild high-scoring 66-38 homecoming victory over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.
The Class 2A district opener for both squads took place at Bulldog Stadium on Friday, Sept. 21, in front of huge red-and-black following for the team’s annual homecoming contest.

Algona High School Wall of Fame to induct Johnson, Meyers

ALGONA – The Algona High School Wall of Fame Committee has announced the 2018 class of the Wall of Fame.

AHS goes 4-1 at Forest City tournament

FOREST CITY—Algona had their best Saturday tournament of the season as the red-and-black went 4-1 at the Forest City Invitational with the only loss coming to Lake Mills by the score of 21-16 and 21-15.
The Bulldogs defeated Saint Ansgar 21-19 and 21-15, topped Boone by the count of 21-8 and 21-11, defeated Spencer 21-8 and 21-18 and ended the day with a 17-21, 21-17 and 15-10 win over North Central Conference foe Clear Lake .

Lake Mills rallies past Warriors

Lake Mills scored twice in the fourth quarter to rally from a 12-7 deficit to squeeze out a 20-12, non-district win over the North Union Warriors. The contest took place on Friday, Sept. 14 at Armstrong.
Cael Boehmer scored on a long run and returned an interception for scores in the final 12 minutes for the Bulldogs as they earned their first victory of the season.

Homecoming Romp

Homecoming week always makes football coaches very nervous on how their squad will come out on Friday night. Bishop Garrigan coach Marty Wadle found out early and often that his team was up to the task as the black-and-gold rolled to a 52-0 shellacking of the St. Edmond Gaels.
The home team set the tone early in the game as they took the opening kickoff and went 64 yards in 12 plays as Eric Thul ran the final yard for the touchdown.

AHS swimmers fall to Dodgers

The Algona swim team travel south down Highway 169 to Fort Dodge for a meet on Thursday, Sept. 6 and fell to the Dodgers by a final score of 121-48.
“The girls had a lot of energy tonight,” said head coach Jim Fisher. “Josie Wiita in 100 backstroke; Kaitlyn Pollock in the 100 butterfly and Kylie Allen in the 100 breaststroke all took four seconds or more from their previous time. The girls really practiced hard on Wednesday and that carried over to the meet tonight.”

Meis 4th at Holstein

John Meis of Bishop Garrigan placed fourth at the Tim Thomas Classic ran at the Holstein Country Club on Saturday, Sept. 8. It was a good day overall for the black-and-gold as two of his teammates for the boys and one on the girls’ side earned medals in the meet.

Bulldogs amass 522 yards in win

An explosive, high powered Algona offense amassed 522 total yards in a 41-21 victory over the Emmetsburg E-Hawks. The red-and-black did just about anything they wanted the first three quarters in the game played on Friday, Sept. 7 at Emmetsburg.
Emmetsburg got the ball to start the game and fumbled on the sixth play of the game and Dainen VanGorkum recovered for the visitors at midfield.

Bulldogs 3-3 in 'Classic'

Algona started fast by winning their first three matches of the day before dropping their final three to finish 3-3 at the Algona Classic volleyball tournament played in Algona on Saturday, Sept. 1.
North Union also competed in the six-team field and went winless on the day, despite dropping some close matches as Spirit Lake was the tournament champions with a mark of 5-1 during the day.

Gaels rally by Warriors

St. Edmond scored twice in the final quarter on a pair of long runs to rally for an 18-12 come-from-behind win over the North Union Warriors. The non-district football game was played at Armstrong on Friday, Aug. 31.
After a scoreless first period, North Union opened the contest’s scoring in the second stanza as sophomore Ryan Lang scored on a two-yard touchdown run to complete an 11 play, 66-yard drive.

Golden Bears hold off Newman

Bishop Garrigan built a big lead early and overcame four turnovers to topple a stubborn Mason City Newman squad by the score of 28-21 in a game played at Conway Field on Friday, Aug. 31.
Things started well for the home team as they took opening kickoff and marched 71 yards in nine plays as quarterback Brad Capesius ran the final six yards for a touchdown. The conversion try failed, but the black-and-gold led 6-0 with 4:20 gone in the contest.

Big plays, mistakes doom Wolverines

Two big plays and some miscues, including four turnovers were too much for the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines football team to overcome in a 20-12 season opening loss to the Glidden-Ralston Wildcats in a game played at West Bend on Friday, Aug. 24.

Algona passes Humboldt

Senior quarterback Matt Grein threw four touchdown passes as the Algona Bulldogs opened the 2018 campaign with an impressive 33-14 victory over the Humboldt Wildcats in a contest that took place on Friday, Aug. 24 at Humboldt.
The visitors out-scored the blue-and-gold 19-7 in the second half to earn the win. Grein completed 12-of-17 passes for 155 yards and did not throw an interception in the game.
