Capesius Class A first team pick

Four members of the Bishop garrigan and one from the North Union Warriors were chosen to the all-state team in Class A by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association in Des Moines Nov. 17.

Four players return to first team

Youth has a dominating sparkle in the 14th Annual All-Area Volleyball Team as the first team features eight underclassmen, and there are three more making the second team.
Four players return to the squad headed by a three-time selection in Algona’s Aliyah Buscher, while teammates Molly McCauley and Abbey Holmes, along with Emma Fogarty of Bishop Garrigan, are repeaters from last season.

Defending 2A champions rally to nip Algona 24-21

WAUKON—Waukon is the defending state champion in Class 2A and Algona gave them all they could handle as the orange-and-black continued their hopes of repeating with a hard-fought 24-21 quarterfinal round victory over the Bulldogs on Friday, Nov. 2.
The Indians jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead, but the red-and-black fought back to take the lead at 14-12 and enjoy a 21-18 advantage at halftime before the defending champions rallied for the victory and another trip to the UNI-Dome.

Errors doom Golden Bears in 6-0 loss

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan out-gained Edgewood-Colesburg by almost 100 yards, but five turnovers were too much for the Golden Bears to overcome as the Vikings nipped the black-and-gold 6-0 in a Class A football quarterfinal round contest played on Friday, Nov. 2.
Uncharacteristically, Bishop Garrigan put the football on the ground five times, losing four of those fumbles, threw an interception and also committed seven penalties for 75 yards.

BGHS gives Wadle 200th career win

ALGONA—It was a very eventful evening at Conway Field on Friday, Oct. 12 as the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears defeated West Fork 57-26. The victory gave the black-and-gold a piece of their fourth straight district title and head coach Marty Wadle the 200th win of his career.

Engen is NCC's XC champion

IOWA FALLS—Algona senior Trey Engen captured the North Central Conference boys’ individual cross-country title by topping a talented 55-man field on Thursday, Oct. 11. Engen, ranked 18th in the latest rankings, covered the 5K road course in a season-best clocking of 15:56.57.

Algona wins ranked battle; seeks district crown Friday

 ALGONA—Algona took a huge step toward a district title as the No. 3 ranked Bulldogs defeated eighth-ranked Spirit Lake 30-24 in a key Class 2A district battle played on Friday, Oct. 12.
The home team built a two-touchdown lead in both the first and second half only to see the Indians tie the game up with 2:55 to play, but the high-powered Algona offense responded by going 83 yards in nine plays for the winning score.

Swimmers improve times

The Algona swim team dropped a pair of meets at the Spencer YMCA pool on Monday, Oct. 8. The Bulldogs fell to Spencer by the score of 79-14 and lost to Storm Lake by the count of 67-23.
“We had several girls swimming different events tonight trying to find out who fits in where,” said Algona head coach Jim Fisher. “Even though the team did not score well, they were competitive.

BGHS rallies past valiant Warriors

ARMSTRONG—After being held scoreless the first 42 minutes, Bishop Garrigan scored twice in the final six minutes in an exciting 12-6 come-from-behind victory over a gallant North Union Warrior squad in a contest played on Friday, Oct. 5.

Bulldogs roll to 7-0

ESTHERVILLE—They did not roll up 600 yards of offense and scored over 60 points, but the No. 3 rated Algona Bulldogs still rolled to a convincing 49-22 Class 2A district football victory over the Estherville-Lincoln Central Midgets on Friday, Oct. 5.
The Bulldogs started fast, taking a 21-0 first quarter lead and built the advantage to 49-7 in the third quarter before the home team scored twice in the final five minutes against the red-and-black’s junior varsity.

Fehr throws five TD passes, Wolverines roll

WEST BEND—Senior quarterback Lincoln Fehr tossed five touchdown passes to lead the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines to a 40-6 victory over Kingsley-Pierson in eight-man district football played on Friday, Sept. 28.
Fehr completed 8-of-10 passes on the night for 154 yards and the five touchdowns as the purple-and-gold improved 4-2 overall and more importantly, is now 3-1 in the district.
