Warriors edge Forest City 2-1 in league play

SWEA CITY—Playing on their home field for the first time in the 2024 season, the North Union Warriors softball squad nipped the Forest City Indians 2-1 in Top of Iowa Conference play on Friday, June 14.

Beth Strueber doubled and Brylie Deim came up with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning for the walk-off win. The home team scored once in the bottom of the first before the Indians tied the contest up in the top of second and it remained that way until the seventh.

Walders leads Warriors past West Hancock

BRITT—Shallie Walders had three hits and knocked in three runs to help lead the North Union Warrior softball squad to a 10-0, six-inning Top of Iowa Conference victory over the West Hancock Eagles.

The green-black-and-silver improved to 11-8 overall on the year and are now 8-1 in the conference while the Eagles fell to 1-13 overall and are now 1-8 in the league.

Lynx blank Algona 2-0 in NCC softball play

ALGONA—Webster City’s Delaney Bargfrede tossed a gem to lead the Lynx to a 2-0 North Central Conference softball victory on Wednesday, June 12 over the Algona Bulldogs.

Bargfrede was sharp all seven innings as she allowed just two hits while striking out 17 red-and-black hitters, issued one base-on-ball and hit a batter to earn the win in the chalked circle.

Alta-Aurelia blanks Wolverines 6-0

ALTA—Alta-Aurelia shutout the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine baseball team 6-0 on Monday, June 17 in Twin Lakes Conference action.

The Warriors plated singled runs in both the first and fourth frames and tallied four runs in the bottom of the third inning in the league victory.

West Bend-Mallard fell to 4-9 overall on the season and is now 3-4 in Twin Lakes Conference games as Alta-Aurelia strengthened their grip on first place in the league at 7-1 and are now 11-5 overall.

Poky snaps Golden Bear 8-game winning streak

ALGONA—Pocahontas Area surprised the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears’ baseball team on Thursday, June 13 by the final score of 8-4 in non-conference action.

The visitors raced out to an early 6-0 advantage after their first three at-bats and never trailed in improving to 8-5 overall this season while the black-and-gold fell to 12-4 on the year.

Forest City defeats Warriors 16-6 in five innings

BANCROFT—Forest City used three big innings to plate 16 runs in a 16-6, five-inning Top of Iowa Conference baseball victory on Friday, June 14 over the North Union Warriors.

The Indians tallied six runs in both the third and fifth stanzas and added four more in the second frame to end the game early as the green-black-and-silver scored all six of their runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

NU softball drops two games at Newman tournament

MASON CITY—North Union dropped a pair of softball games on Saturday, June 15 at the Mason City Newman Knight tournament.

The green-black-and-silver fell to Osage by the final score of 13-5 in their opener before dropping a tough 3-1 decision to 10th ranked Mason City Newman in their second game of the day.

In the opener, the Green Devils built a 7-0 advantage after the first two innings of play and never looked back as they pounded out 11 hits in the victory.

No. 5 E-LC blanks BGHS 12-0

ESTHERVILLE—Fifth-ranked Estherville-Lincoln Central scored in every inning in a 12-0, four-inning non-conference softball victory on Thursday, June 13 over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.

E-LC pitchers Tatum Dunlavy and Rylee Yager silenced the black-and-gold batters as they combined to strike out 10 of 13 Golden Bears they faced in the contest.

ALGONA—Wes Streit pitched four solid innings as Reid Louwagie had three hits along with two each by Tate Slagle, Daniel Kemna and Tate Garman as the Algona Bulldogs routed Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 16-1 in four innings in non-conference baseball play.

ALGONA—Reagan Haynes and Maya Lentz blasted home runs to help lead the Algona Bulldogs softball squad to a 14-2 romp in four innings over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals.

Lentz also added a single, scored twice and knocked in five RBI as Kaitlyn Burns, Casey VanOtterloo and Haynes each chased home a pair of runs in the victory.

Algona softball tops North Union 5-1

ALGONA—Algona picked up a 5-1 non-conference softball victory on Thursday, June 6 over the North Union Warriors. Each team had five hits in the contest as the home team used a four-run fifth inning to take the win.

North Union got on the scoreboard first in the second inning as Olivia Price laced a leadoff double and came around to touch the plate off an RBI groundout by Maisey Bierstedt for an early 1-0 advantage.

WB-M earns 2nd win of season over Cougars 9-2

GILMORE CITY—Mitch Stevens had four hits and knocked in five RBI as Houston Nielsen pitched six plus strong innings to lead the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines to their second win of the season on Monday, June 10 with a 9-2 victory over the Manson Northwest Webster Cougars.

Each team scored once in the first inning before Tyler Hansen laced a two-run single in the third frame for a 3-1 purple-and-gold advantage.

Algona wins Carroll tournament

CARROLL—Algona earned a pair of impressive wins on Saturday, June 8 to place first at the Carroll tournament played at beautiful Merchants Park.

The red-and-black toppled Coon Rapids-Bayard 14-3 in the opener before claiming the championship with a hard-fought 8-5 victory over Saydel.

In the opener, Isaac Wilson hurled six strong innings and the Bulldogs pounded out a total of 15 hits with Tate Slagle leading the way with four singles and Logan Lentz added three singles.

Bulldogs earn lopsided NCC victory

ALGONA—Algona rolled to a 12-0, three-inning North Central Conference softball victory on Friday, June 7 over the Clarion-Goldfield/Dows Cowgirls to improve to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in conference games.

The red-and-black started fast with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning; tacked on another in the second and ended the contest early with four tallies in the bottom of the third frame.

Wolverines outslug Titans 29-14

LYTTON—In a wild high-scoring softball game, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine junior varsity squad out-slugged the South Central Calhoun Titans by the final score of 29-14 on Wednesday, June 5.

The purple-and-gold had 17 hits in the win as both Lily Hoover and McKenna Crawmer had three hits with one of Hoover’s hits being a double.

Golden Bears defeat Belmond-Klemme 12-3

ALGONA—Both Abbie Capesius and Hanna Merron drove in four RBI as Ella Schaaf recorded 10 strikeouts to lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear softball squad to a 12-3 Top of Iowa Conference win over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos on Monday, June 10.

Schaaf tossed all seven innings to earn the victory in the circle. She gave up three earned runs on seven hits while fanning 10 and issued three base-on-balls.
