Taylor competes in Johnston Invitational

JOHNSTON—The Algona swim team had just one competitor at the Johnston Invitational held on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Summit Middle School in Johnston.

Reese Taylor of the red-and-black competed against 14 other young ladies in the one-meter diving event and after all 11 dives were completed, she ended up in third place overall with her total score of 386.95.

Golden Bears fall to Newell-Fonda in non-conference match

ALGONA—With their Top of Iowa Conference schedule completed, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears’ volleyball squad took on Newell-Fonda on Thursday, Oct. 10 in a non-conference match won by the Mustangs in three games.

The visitors prevailed in a tight opening set by the score of 25-22 before taking the second game 25-15 and ended the match with a 25-16 victory in game number three.

Two area teams compete at North Iowa VB tourney

BUFFALO CENTER—Both the North Union and West Bend-Mallard volleyball squads competed at the North Iowa tournament on Saturday, Oct. 12.

The purple-and-gold went 2-2 during the day in the five-team tournament as the Warriors were winless on the day and North Iowa won their own tourney with a perfect 4-0 mark.

Wolverines roll to homecoming victory over North Iowa

WEST BEND—Having big nights from both Austin Schmidt and Cole Fehr, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines football team rolled to a 69-26 homecoming victory over the North Iowa Bison on Friday, Oct. 4.

Each of the Wolverines rushed for 100 yards on the evening as Fehr scored four touchdowns and Schmidt also reached the end zone on four different occasions.

Impressive win for top-ranked Algona over No. 5 Lions

ALGONA—A very impressive showing on both sides of the football propelled top-ranked Algona to a 28-7 Class 3A district victory over the fifth-rated Clear Lake Lions on Friday, Oct. 4 at Bulldog Stadium in front of a large, vocal crowd.

North Union picks up their first victory of the season

SHEFFIELD—Led by a pair of players rushing for over 100 yards on the night, the North Union Warriors’ football team earned their first victory of the season on Friday, Oct. 4 with a 42-13 win over the West Fork Warriors.

Both running back Draven Keeler and quarterback Greyson Colegrove went over the century mark rushing. Keeler ran for three scores as Colegrove ran for two touchdowns and threw for another.

AHS falls to St. Edmond in five sets

ALGONA—It took five grueling sets to determine a winner on Thursday, Oct. 3 in a North Central Conference volleyball match between the Algona Bulldogs and the St. Edmond Gaels as the green-and-white won in five hard-fought games.

Golden Bears roll after sluggish first quarter

CORRECTIONVILLE—Top-ranked Bishop Garrigan overcame a very sluggish first period before rolling to a 71-20, eight-man non-district football win over Siouxland Christian on Friday, Oct. 4.

The black-and-gold started slow as they led just 14-12 after the first 12 minutes of action, but found their stride after that by responding with 51 unanswered points for the victory.

Alexis Cummins places first at Lake Mills Invitational

LAKE MILLS—North Union’s Alexis Cummins ran a season best time of 20:59.3 to place first at the Lake Mills Invitational held at the Rice Lake Golf Course on Monday, Oct. 7 to highlight the performances of the Warrior cross-country teams.

Alyssa Welbig crossed the finish line in 11th place overall in 23:24.2 closely followed by Jacey Welbig in 12th with her clocking of 23:28.1 and Jennifer Carranza ended up in 24th place in 25:47.8.

Schupbach runs career best at Poky on Saturday

POCAHONTAS—West Bend-Mallard junior cross-country runner, Tyra Schupbach, ran her career-best on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Pocahontas Area Invitational to highlight the performances of the purple-and-gold cross-country teams.

Forest City defeats Golden Bears in three straight sets

ALGONA—Forest City remained in second place in the Top of Iowa Conference volleyball standings on Tuesday, Oct. 1 with a league victory in three straight games over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.

The Indians took the opening set by the score of 21-12 before winning the second game 21-15 and ended the match with a 21-12 victory in the third game.

Alta-Aurelia rallies past Wolverines in five sets

WEST BEND—Alta-Aurelia rallied by winning the final three sets to defeat the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines in five games in a Twin Lakes Conference volleyball match played on Thursday, Oct. 3.

The purple-and-gold fell to 13-5 in overall matches with the loss and are 35-22 in games played this season. The Wolverines are 4-4 in Twin Lakes Conference matches and 17-17 in conference games while the Warriors improved to 6-7 overall and 4-4 in the league.

Eagle Grove tops Warriors in five sets

EAGLE GROVE—North Union went on the road in Top of Iowa Conference volleyball play on Tuesday, Oct. 1, traveling to Eagle Grove as the Eagles picked up the league victory in five sets.

The home team won the first two games by the scores of 25-21 and 25-12 before the green-black-and-silver came back to take the next two games by the scores of 25-13 and 25-12. The purple-and-white then won the final set by the count of 15-10.

Schmidt helps WB-M spoil H-LP’s homecoming

LAKE PARK—Senior Austin Schmidt had a huge night to help lead the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine football team to a 51-12 eight-man victory on Friday, Sept. 27 over the Harris-Lake Park Wolves to spoil the their homecoming festivities.

Schupbach wins Algona Invitational

ALGONA—West Bend-Mallard’s Tyra Schupbach cruised to the individual title to highlight the performances of four area girls cross-country squads at the River Road Golf Club on Monday, Sept. 30 at the annual Algona Invitational.

Schupbach led the whole way to top the 99 young ladies running the course as she stopped the watches at 19:31.30, 28 seconds ahead of the runner-up from Clear Lake.

Manske tosses school record five TD passes in AHS win

CHARLES CITY—Senior quarterback Alex Manske tossed a school record five touchdown passes, all in the first half, to lead No. 1 ranked Algona to a 53-25 Class 3A district opening win over Charles City on Friday, Sept. 27.

The future Iowa State Cyclone completed eight of nine passes on the evening for 210 yards and the five scores to lead his team to the victory. The red-and-black exploded for 40 points in the second quarter for the second time this season.
