WB-M drops doubleheader to Emmetsburg

EMMETSBURG—West Bend-Mallard’s junior varsity softball squad dropped a pair of five-inning contests to the Emmetsburg E-Hawks on Tuesday, May 28.

The E-Hawks captured the opening contest by the final score of 11-6 and won the nightcap by the score of 15-14 with a walk-off win.

Wolverines drop third straight contest

GILMORE CITY—Southeast Valley pushed across the winning tally in the top of the sixth inning to squeeze out a hard-fought 5-4 Twin Lakes Conference baseball win on Monday, June 3 over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.

The Jaguars scored single runs in the second, third and sixth innings and two more in the fourth as purple-and-gold tallied a single run in the bottom of the second frame and three runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Algona drops pair of close games at Boone Invitational

BOONE—The pitching was great, but runs were hard to come by as the Algona Bulldogs baseball team dropped a pair of close games at the Boone Invitational on Saturday, June 1.

The red-and-black started the day with a hard-fought 2-1 loss in 10 innings to the Boone Toreadors before falling 4-0 to the ADM Tigers.

Lichter lands in State Top 5 for 2nd Straight Year

MARSHALLTOWN—For the second consecutive year, Bishop Garrigan senior, Avery Lichter, recorded a top five finish in the Class 1A girls state golf tournament held at the American Legion Course on Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

Lichter finished in fourth place overall in the meet. She carded a 43-40—83 on Thursday and came back with a 42-43—85, an 18-hole total of 168.

Henderson places 9th at Class 1A state golf meet

AMES—North Union sophomore, Drew Henderson, just missed earning a medal at the Class 1A state golf tournament played at the Ames Golf & Country Club.

The tournament began on Monday, May 20 as each player played a total of 18 holes and were scheduled to play 18 more on Tuesday.

Brooks places 18th at Class 3A state golf meet

CEDAR FALLS—Abby Brooks of Algona placed 18th at the Class 3A state golf tournament played on Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24 at the Pheasant Ridge Golf Course.

Brooks made an improvement of 31 places as the Bulldog senior ended up in 49th overall last spring at the 2023 Class 3A state tournament.

Golden Bears blank Algona 5-0 in cross-town softball

BISHOP GARRIGAN—Ella Schaaf pitched seven strong innings and Abbie Capesius blasted a two-run homer to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears softball squad to a 5-0 win over cross-town rival Algona on Thursday, May 23.

Schaaf allowed no runs on just a pair of hits in her seven innings of work while fanning eight batters, walked none and hit a batter.

Golden Bears improve to 3-0 on the year

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan remain undefeated on the year with a hard-fought 6-2 Top of Iowa Conference softball victory on Friday, May 24 over the Lake Mills Bulldogs.

The black-and-gold scored twice in the second and sixth frames and added single tallies in the third and fourth stanzas as the Bulldogs only runs came in the top of the sixth inning.

Walk-off victory for Wolverines softball

WEST BEND—Avery Weydert’s single to right-center field chased home Olivia Van Helst in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines junior varsity softball squad a thrilling 14-13 win over East Sac County’s junior varsity.

Van Helst led the purple-and-gold offense with three hits, including a two-bagger, Leah Hoffman added a single and a triple and Weydert contributed a pair of singles.

Golden Bears move to 2-0 in league

ALGONA—Picking up their second straight Top of Iowa Conference baseball victory on Friday, May 24, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears defeated the Lake Mills Bulldogs 12-2 in six innings.

The black-and-gold scored single runs in the first and sixth frames, tallied seven times in the fourth and three times in the fifth frame in the win while the visitors scored single runs in both the first and fifth stanzas.

Slagle leads Bulldogs past Webster City 9-0

WEBSTER CITY—Tate Slagle hurled six plus strong innings with 15 strikeouts and belted his third home run of the season to lead the Algona Bulldogs baseball team to a 9-0 North Central Conference baseball win over the Webster City Lynx.

Slagle tossed 6.1 innings of shutout baseball, limiting the Lynx to just two hits. He fanned a total of 15 batters, issued three base-on-balls and hit three batters.

Warriors roll past North Iowa 15-5

BANCROFT—North Union plated nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to roll to a 15-5, five-inning Top of Iowa Conference baseball victory over the North Iowa Bison on Wednesday, May 22.

The green-black-and-silver scored three runs in the first inning, plated two more in the second stanza and one in the third before ending the game with nine in the fifth. North Iowa scored single runs in the first and third frames and tallied three runs in the fourth in the loss.

Wolverines win first game of season

GILMORE CITY—West Bend-Mallard scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn their first victory of the season on Wednesday, May 22 with a 12-9 win over the South Central Calhoun Titans.

The purple-and-gold scored four runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third and five in the sixth for the win as the Titans scored single runs in the first and sixth frames and three runs in the second stanza in the loss.

Forest City defeats North Union 14-1

FOREST CITY—North Union managed just one hit in a 14-1, five-inning Top of Iowa Conference baseball loss on Friday, May 24 to the Forest City Indians.

The home team scored once in the first inning, added three more in the second stanza and put the contest away with 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Bulldogs drop NCC opener 4-3

WEBSTER CITY—Algona opened the North Central Conference softball schedule with a tough 4-3 decision to the Webster City Lynx on Friday, May 24.

The Bulldogs scored three times in the top of the fourth inning on a three-run home run off the bat of Paige Vileta to take a 3-0 advantage.

The home team scored twice in the bottom of the fifth stanza and won the league contest with two more tallies in the sixth frame.

Ulrich leads North Union past E-Hawks 12-0

SWEA CITY—Freshman Ainsley Ulrich hit and pitched her North Union Warrior softball squad past the Emmetsburg E-Hawks on Thursday, May 23 in a non-conference contest.

Ulrich had two hits, including a home run while tossing a three-inning no-hitter in the chalked circle with four strikeouts and no walks.
