North Union snapped a 16-game losing streak, and it took a triple overtime to do it as the green, black and silver outlasted Eagle Grove 70-67 in Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball action in Eagle Grove.
Fifth-ranked Bishop Garrigan broke open a four-point game in the second stanza and went on to a 66-47 Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball victory over the West Hancock Eagles in Britt Feb. 7.
The black and gold led 16-12 at the conclusion of the first period before blowing the contest open in the second quarter to take a 37-18 advantage at halftime. The visitors also led 52-31 at the end of the third period.

West Bend-Mallard snapped a six-game losing streak with a 56-45 Twin Lakes Conference boys basketball victory at home over the Manson Northwest Cougars Feb. 4.
The home team led 16-4 at the conclusion of the first period and increased that advantage to 31-15 at intermission. The Wolverines also enjoyed a 41-27 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Trailing by two points heading into the final frame, the Algona Bulldogs outscored Clear Lake 12-7 in the final eight minutes to upset the fourth-ranked Lions 48-45 in North Central Conference girls basketball action Feb. 4.
Aliyah Buscher drained a late 3-pointer to break a 45-45 deadlock and gave the Bulldogs the victory. Two players reached double digits for the red and black. Abbey Holmes led the way with 15 points, and Buscher added 14.
North Union built a big lead early and cruised to a 67-39 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball victory over the Eagle Grove Eagles.
The green, black and silver led 22-7 at the conclusion of the first quarter and extended that advantage to 34-17 at intermission. The Warriors also held a comfortable 48-30 lead heading into the fourth period.

The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines dropped a 63-36 Twin Lakes Conference decision on Feb. 7 to Pocahontas in West Bend.
The Indians held a 21-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The visitors enjoyed a 30-21 lead at intermission and held a 46-26 lead as the game's final eight minutes of action began.

Five Algona wretlers advance to this week's district tournament at Algona High School from the Class 2A sectional meet Feb. 8. The top two wrestlers from each weight on Saturday advance to the state wrestling tournament.
Three red and black grapplers (Jacob Zabka, Cole Lewis and Andrew Hamilton) earned sectional titles while two other teammates (Luke McKenna and Gavin Meints) took second.

Connor Fehr and Donovan Hanson won sectional titles, highlighting the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad at the Class 1A meet Feb. 8.

For the first 12 minutes of Friday's Top of Iowa Conference contest against North Union, the high-powered Bishop Garrigan offense sputtered.
But a trademark defense kept the squad in the game, and the home team outscored the green, black and silver 58-22 in the final 20 minutes to earn a 69-33 win.

The home team started first by jumping to a 7-1 lead before Robert Ortman drained a 3-pointer, and Avery Krantz scored a hoop off a nice pass from Braden Pierce to cut the advantage to 7-6.
Junior Trevor Kruse earned the highest-ever finish in a conference meet by a North Union wrestler at the Top of Iowa Conference meet Feb. 1 in Osage. He placed third to highlight the performances of the Warrior grapplers.
Kruse went 3-1 on the day to improve to 26-4 on the year. The junior had a first round bye before earning a fall over Ashten Love of Lake MIlls in 3:05. His lone loss of the day came in the semifinals.

Algona earned a huge North Central Conference (NCC) boys basketball road win Jan. 31, defeating Iowa Falls-Alden 58-55 in Iowa Falls.
The Bulldogs improved to 12-3 overall and are 8-2 in the NCC while the Cadets fell to 8-7 overall and 5-5 in the league.
