Schaaf’s career-high 34 points lifts BGHS past Bison

ALGONA—Senior Kyle Schaaf poured in a career-high 34 points in his final appearance in the Bishop Garrigan gymnasium to lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ basketball team to a 74-38 Class 1A district semifinal win on Thursday, Feb. 18 over the North Iowa Bison. The Golden Bears' tournament run ended Tuesday night with a loss in the substate final to Lake Mills.

Hanson 4th, Zabka 7th, Kruse makes NU wrestling history at state tournament

North Union senior Trevor Kruse made history becoming the first wrestler in the seven-year existence of the school’s wrestling program to qualify for the Class 1A state tournament and went 1-2 at 285 pounds at the tourney last week.

WB-M girls can't get past Woodbury Central

MOVILLE—West Bend-Mallard put up a good fight but Woodbury Central was just too strong on Tuesday, Feb. 16 as they handed the Wolverines a 46-39 defeat in the Class 1A regional quarterfinals.

Late Poky hoop ousts North Union

ARMSTRONG—Ellie Melohn hit a three-pointer from the left corner to give the Pocahontas Indians a wild 42-40 victory over the North Union Warrior girls basketball squad in the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A regional tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 16.

BGHS girls return to state

No. 1 ranked Bishop Garrigan defeated BCLUW, 63-31, in the regional final at Mason City Wednesday night. The 23-1 Golden Bears open Class 1A state tournament play Wednesday, March 3, at 2 p.m., against perennial eastern Iowa power and eighth-eeded Springville, which is 21-4. Other teams in the tournament are second-seeded Newell-Fonda (23-1), third-seeded St.

Bulldogs open substate play with win

ALGONA—Algona opened Class 3A substate tournament play on Monday, Feb. 22, at home against Boone, and the red-and-black defeated the Toreadors by the score of 50-42.

Four Bulldogs qualify for district tourney

    SPIRIT LAKE—Four Algona wrestlers advanced to Saturday’s district wrestling tournament in Humboldt by placing first or second at the Class 2A sectional meet in Spirit Lake on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Jacob Zabka finished first while teammates Reece Eakins, Brandon Harris and Logan Meendering each were runner-ups for the red-and-black.

2 Wolverines, 3 Warriors reach district

    MANSON—Five area wrestlers advance on to Saturday’s Class 1A district wrestling tournament in Sioux Rapids by placing first or second at the sectional meet held here Saturday, Feb. 6.
Two West Bend-Mallard grapplers and a trio of North Union competitors will move on. The Wolverines finished in third place in the team race with 159.5 points and the Warriors ended up in eighth place with a team score of 90.
 

Fogarty’s buzzer-beating triple gives BGHS win

ALGONA—Sophomore Andrew Fogarty tossed in a three-pointer as the final buzzer sounded to give the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys basketball team a thrilling 57-56 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the West Hancock Eagles.
The home team led 11-10 at the conclusion of the first period and held a 27-23 advantage at halftime. The Golden Bears led 41-38 at the conclusion of the third quarter before needing Fogarty’s late heroics to earn the league win.
 

AHS girls earn fourth NCC win

ALGONA—All season long the trademark for a young Algona Bulldog girls basketball team is playing great defense. That fact was on full display on Friday, Feb. 5 as that strong defense led the Bulldogs to a 28-23 victory over the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs.
The home team led by the score of 10-5 at the conclusion of the first period and held a 14-10 advantage at intermission. Algona also led 23-13 heading into the fourth quarter of action.

WB-M girls notch 10th win of season

MANSON—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls basketball squad earned their 10th victory of the 2020-2021 season on Tuesday, Feb. 2 with a 44-26 Twin Lakes Conference win over the Manson Northwest Webster Cougars.
Both Kayla Hoskins and Monika Fehr tossed in 12 points to lead the purple-and-gold in scoring as Kierstin Montag added eight points closely followed by Rachel Fehr with seven points.

Warrior girls earn 13th victory

ARMSTRONG—The North Union Warrior girls basketball squad earned their 13th victory of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 2 with a 75-35 Top of Iowa Conference win over the Eagle Grove Eagles.
Four players reached double figures for North Union as Sam Nielsen led the way with 20 points closely followed by Olivia Von Bank with 19 points while teammates Vanessa Von Bank and Naomi Jones both added 10 points.

NU boys win second game of year

ARMSTRONG—Eleven different players dented the scoring column as the North Union Warrior boys basketball captured their second victory of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 2 with a 72-47 Top of Iowa Conference win over the Eagle Grove Eagles.
Four players reached double figures led by Gage Madden with 20 points as Aidan Fries chipped in with 14 points with Nick Schiltz adding 11 points and Carter Anderson had 10 points.
 

WB-M boys defeat Cougars, 43-35

MANSON—Sam Fehr had a huge night to help lead the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys basketball team on Tuesday, Feb. 2 to a 43-35 Twin Lakes Conference victory over the Manson Northwest Webster Cougars.
The home team led 14-11 at the conclusion of the first quarter of play before the Wolverines rallied to take a 22-18 advantage at intermission. The visitors also led 31-27 heading into the fourth period of action.

Golden Bear girls claim league title

FOREST CITY—Forest City came out hot early behind the three-point arc by making four long shots in the first 10 minutes of the game but top-ranked Bishop Garrigan hit full stride in the second period and never looked back in a 64-29 win over the Indians.

Balanced scoring leads Bulldogs to victory

ALGONA—A balanced scoring that featured four players in double figures and 10 different players scoring led the Algona Bulldog boys’ basketball to a 66-44 North Central Conference victory on Friday, Feb. 5, over the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs.
Garrett Goche led the locals in scoring with 16 points while teammate Kyle Simpson tossed 12 points and both Tyler Manske and James Wartick contributed 11 points.
