Experience headlines all-area Volleyball team

Upperclassmen dominate the 15th annual All-Area Volleyball Team. The first team features seven seniors and a trio of young women returning for the third time. One other player is back for the second straight year, and three players move up from last year's second team to join three newcomers to the 2019 first team.

Algona faces falcons in class 2A semifinal

The Algona Bulldogs football team (11-0) takes on the Odeboldt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove Falcons (11-0) in the semifinal round of the Class 2A playoffs Saturday in the Cedar Falls UNI-Dome at 4 p.m.
The red and black are the no. 3 seed while the Falcons come in at no. 4. The Falcons defeated West Marshall 26-7 in the first round of the playoffs and beat Prairie City-Monroe 48-20 last week.

Bulldogs win playoff opener 35-14

Third-ranked Algona overcame a slow start to roll to a 35-14 victory over the Central Lyon/George-Little Rock Lions in the Class 2A opening round of the football playoffs on Nov. 1 at Bulldog Stadium.
After a scoreless first quarter, Algona got on the scoreboard by driving 58 yards in five plays. Wyatt Wegener scored on a 9-yard run.

AHS hosts Rams with trip to dome on the line

The Algona Bulldogs football team (10-0) hosts the Greene County Rams (9-1) in the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A playoffs Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.
The red and black are the No. 3 overall seed in the playoffs while the Rams come in at No. 8 after a 35-21 win over Des Moines Christian. The winner of that contest will play in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls in the semifinals against an opponent to be determined.

Golden Bears fall in semifinals

Bishop Garrigan won the opening set, but the 11th-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck rallied to win the next three games in the Class 2A regional volleyball semifinal played Thursday, Nov. 1.
The black and gold completed a nice season with an overall match record of 19-12 and went 57-35 in games played in those matches. The Rebels headed to the regional final against four-time defending state champ Janesville with a 26-8 season mark.

Swim team's season ends

The 2019 season came to end for the Algona Bulldogs swim team at the regional meet held here Nov. 2.
The Bulldogs finished in ninth place in the 10-team field with a team total of 54 points. Defending state champion Ames won the regional title with a team score of 560.5, and Sioux City Metro was the runner-up with 324.5 points.

Humboldt too strong for AHS

Algona put up a good fight, but the Humboldt Wildcats were too strong as they defeated the red and black in three straight sets in the semifinal round of the Class 3A regional volleyball tournament.
Algona jumped to a 3-0 lead to start the match, but the home team battled back to tie the game at 4-4.

BGHS advances to regional semifinal

Bishop Garrigan defeated the North Iowa Lady Bison in three straight sets on Monday, Oct. 28, to advance to the Class 1A regional semifinals Oct. 31 at Webster City versus Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
The black and gold improved to 19-11 in overall matches this fall and 55-32 in games played while the Lady Bison bowed out with a season record of 20-13. It was Bishop Garrigan's third win this season over North Iowa.

Bulldogs defense smothers Jaguars 43-0

For the first time since 1925, an Algona Bulldog football team has completed a perfect 9-0 regular season. The red and black used a smothering defense to post a 43-0 shutout victory over the Southeast Valley Jaguars.
The squad heads into the Class 2A playoffs with a lot of momentum. The team hosts Central Lyon/George-Little Rock Friday night.

4th quarter rally leads BGHS to victory

Bishop Garrigan erupted for 23 fourth-quarter points to rally from a 16-14 deficit and post a 37-16 victory over the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthben-Ayrshire Titans in the regular season finale for both squads on Friday, Oct. 25.
The Titans scored the first 16 points of the Class A district contest before the black and gold responded with the final 37 points.

BGHS tops WB-M in regional VB opener

In a Class 1A regional volleyball opener on Tuesday, Oct. 22, Bishop Garrigan defeated a pesky West Bend-Mallard squad in three straight sets.
The home team jumped to an early 4-1 lead in the opening game. West Bend-Mallard battled back and kept the set close. Leading 15-13, BGHS extended the advantage to 19-13.

Bulldogs rally past Southeast Valley in tourney opener

Senior leadership is a key component to post-season success for a team to advance at tournament time.
Senior Molly McCauley provided that leadership by hammering home a match-high 30 kills, including three early in the final set, to lead the Algona Bulldogs to an exciting five-set, Class 3A regional volleyball win over a scrappy Southeast Valley Jaguars squad on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Warriors fall to Lake Mills

The 2019 volleyball season came to an end for the North Union Warriors as the squad dropped a Class 2A regional contest to the Lake Mills Bulldogs in three straight sets on Monday, Oct. 28.
The green, black and silver finished the season with an overall match record of 3-24 and went 17-48 in games played in those matches.

Mustangs gallop past West Bend-Mallard

Newell-Fonda scored in every quarter in a 36-16 season-ending, eight-man football victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines in a contest played on Friday, Oct. 25.
The Wolverines finished the year with an overall record of 2-8 and were 1-5 in district play, good enough for sixth place, while the Mustangs finished the season 6-3 overall and were 4-2 in the district.

Algona hosts Central Lyon in playoffs

The Algona Bulldogs football team (9-0) will host Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (5-4) in the first round of Class 2A playoffs Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.
The red and black are the the No. 3 overall seed in the playoffs while the Lions come in at No. 16. The winner of that contest will play at the highest remaining seed on Friday, Nov. 8, against the survivor of the contest between No. 8 Greene County (8-1) and No. 9 Des Moines Christian *-1).

Warhawks stop North Union's late charge

A valiant fourth-quarter rally by the North Union Warriors football squad fell just short as the green, black and silver lost to the West Fork Warhawks 13-12 in the season finale for both teams on Friday, Oct. 25.
West Fork scored on the opening possession. The visitors marched 74 yards in 13 plays to take an early 7-0 advantage. The contest remained that way until 47 seconds remained in the first half when the Warhawks scored on a 2-yard run to lead 13-0 at intermission.
