Etherington five-time first-team all-area selection by the Advance

A dozen talented players return for the 15th annual Kossuth County Advance All-Area Softball team. The 18-member squad is made up of nine seniors, one junior, three sophomores and five freshmen.
Kameryn Etherington of Algona becomes just the second player in the 15-year existence of the all-area softball squad to make the first unit for the fifth time, while Bishop Garrigan’s Amanda Miller is a four-time selection. 
 

Dooley wins fourth Algona Am championship

ALGONA—Adam Dooley of Minneapolis won the Randy Buscher Memorial Algona Am golf tournament on Saturday, and Sunday, Aug. 8-9, at the Algona Country Club.
Dooley built a nice lead after Saturday’s first 18 holes by recording eight birdies and came back with three more on Sunday morning to post a six-shot advantage heading into the final nine holes.

Meyer wins Dirt Knight Tour feature

ALGONA—Nick Meyer led all 30 laps to win the Dirt Knight Tour modified feature to conclude a huge evening of dirt track racing at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday, Aug. 6.
The event was the first of two nights of racing at the track last week where the feature winners each received a six-foot-tall trophy. Thursday night was also the Denny Hovinga Memorial and winners of the top four classes each earned $1,000 for first place.

Harken Memorial attracts 91 cars

ALGONA—A nice crowd in the grandstand along with 92 cars and five vintage cars attended the sixth annual Gary Harken Memorial race on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Kossuth County Speedway.
The sport mods had the biggest car count of evening with 27 followed by 18 in the hobby stock class. There were 16 stock cars signed in at the track, and a group of 15 modifieds competed for the second night of dirt track racing during the COVID-19, scaled-down Kossuth County Fair.
 

Kossuth County Advance announces All-Area Baseball Team

Just four players return for the 15th annual Kossuth County Advance All-Area Baseball first team. Bishop Garrigan’s Marcus Plathe is the only player to make the first team for the third time in his career while Algona’s Cameren Rindone, Bishop Garrigan’s Isaiah Byrkeland and North Union’s Noah Morphew all are repeaters from last year’s 2019 squad.

Weishaar Memorial draws 29 hobby stocks

ALGONA—A field of 29 hobby stock cars competed in the first annual Jess Weishaar Memorial along with the Mid-Summer Shootout for the first place prize of $1,000 at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday, July 30.
The night was dedicated to Weishaar who was senselessly murdered in an attempted bank robbery in Lu Verne within the past year.
A total of 85 cars were in the pits, including 15 stock cars, 14 modifieds and 13 sport mods.

Veterans Night draws season highs

ALGONA—The fourth annual Salute to Veterans Night at the Kossuth County Speedway continues to get bigger every year and on Thursday, July 23, it brought a season high in both the car count and dirt track racing fans in the grandstands.
The big evening is dedicated to honor veterans who have given their service to protect the rights Americans have today, and it attracted a season-high total of 124 cars, including 33 stock cars, 31 sport mods and 26 modifieds.

Golden Bears win district opener

RUTHVEN—Bishop Garrigan did not get a hit until the top of the seventh inning, but pitcher Marcus Plathe did not let that bother him. The senior right-hander pitched the black-and-gold to a 3-1 Class 1A district opening victory over Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire.
The contest was played on Saturday, July 11. The teams combined for just four hits as the pitchers in the game fanned a total of 18 batters.

Wildcats get 7-4 win over Bulldogs

HUMBOLDT—Jacob Thurm belted a pair of two-run homers and pitched four shutout innings on Monday, July 13, to lead the Humboldt Wildcats to a 7-4 North Central Conference baseball victory over the Algona Bulldogs.
The blue-and-gold improved to 9-5 overall on the year and are 4-1 in conference play while the Bulldogs fell to 7-8 overall and finished at 4-3 in North Central Conference contests.

North Union improves to 11-4 overall

MANSON—North Union completed the 2020 regular season on Friday, July 10, with a 12-1, nonconference softball victory over the Manson Northwest Webster Cougars. The Warriors scored single runs in the second, third and sixth frames, plated two runs in the first, four more in the fifth and three runs in the seventh frame.

Wolverines earn Twin Lakes Conference win

LAKE CITY—A big, four-run fourth inning proved to be the difference on Wednesday, July 8, as the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines softball squad picked up a 5-3 Twin Lakes Conference win over the South Central Calhoun Titans.

Late blast leads AHS past Cadets

ALGONA—Kameryn Etherington blasted a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to propel the sixth-ranked Algona Bulldogs to a 3-1 North Central Conference win on Wednesday, July 8, over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets.
Ashlin Young went the first five innings to earn the win in the chalked circle. She gave up no runs on a pair of hits with two strikeouts and walked none.

BGHS loses wild regular season finale

MASON CITY—Bishop Garrigan let an early 9-1 laead get away on Friday, July 10, as 12th-ranked Mason City Newman rallied for a wild, 14-13, eight-inning win over the sixth-rated Golden Bears in the regular season finale for both squads, and a game that could preview a Regional final matchup.
