Algona swimmers host only home meet, senior night

The Algona swim team hosted Spencer Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Algona Family YMCA in its only home meet of the season and fell to the Tigers by the score of 139-31.
It was Senior Night at the pool, and the squad’s eight seniors were honored during the intermission break.

Boys, girls runners medal at Algona Invite

ALGONA—Area cross-country runners earned medals for top 40 finishes to highlight the performances of the four area high school squads on Monday, Sept. 28 at the Algona Invitational held at the River Road Golf Course.

Golden Bears beat Warriors in OT

ALGONA—Kellen Murphy scored on a seven-yard run in overtime to give the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears to a 33-27 victory Friday, Sept. 25, over the North Union Warriors in Class A district football action.
 
The squads ended regulation deadlocked at 27-27 after the home team scored on a 30-yard pass play with 3:54 remaining in the contest to force the overtime.

Lang rushes Warriors to win; Wolverines win title

Ryan Lang rushed for over 250 yards and scored five touchdowns for the second straight week on Saturday, Sept. 19, to lead the North Union Warriors to a big, 38-9, homecoming victory over the Manson Northwest Webster Cougars.
 
For the second consecutive season, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines volleyball squad won the title at the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Invitational played on Saturday, Sept. 19.
 

BGHS defeats North Union in three sets

In a Top of Iowa Conference volleyball match played on Tuesday, Sept. 15, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears defeated North Union in three straight games.
The black-and-gold won the opening set by the score of 25-21 before taking the second game by the count of 25-13. The Golden Bears then won the match by winning a hard-fought third set by the score of 25-23.

Bulldogs' stiff defense leads to victory

Algona amassed 470 yards of offense but the story was the red-and-black’s defense as they limited high-powered Garner-Hayfield/Ventura to just 96 total yards on the evening in a 27-7 Class 2A district victory over the Cardinals on Friday, Sept. 18, for their first win of the 2020 season.

Knights rally to topple Golden Bears, 28-20

   ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, but Mason City Newman scored twice in the final 12 minutes on Friday, Sept. 4, to earn a 28-20 non-district football victory over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.
Before some of the home team fans even had a chance to find their seats, Isaiah Plathe grabbed the opening kickoff and dashed 86 yards down the right sideline for a touchdown.
 

Knapp places 6th at Lynx Invitational

   WEBSTER CITY—Moriah Knapp finished sixth overall and two runners earned medals to highlight the performances of the Algona Bulldog boys and girls cross-country squads on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Lynx Invitational.
Knapp crossed the finish line in 22:11 to earn a medal while teammate Carley Mullins just missed a medal with her 15th place showing with her clocking of 23:08.19.
 

Schiltz takes 12th at Okoboji to pace NU, WB-M boys runners

MILFORD—Nick Schiltz of North Union crossed the finish line in 12th place overall on Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Okoboji Invitational at the Woodlyn Hills Golf Course to highlight the performances of the North Union and West Bend-Mallard boys’ cross-country teams.

Julia Fehr places 13th at Milford to pace WB-M, NU runners

MILFORD—Julia Fehr of West Bend-Mallard finished in 13th place overall to highlight the performances of both the North Union and West Bend-Mallard girls’ cross-country squads on Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Okoboji Invitational.
West Bend-Mallard ended up in 11th place in the team race with 274 points as North Union had only three runners and no team score with Sibley-Ocheyedan won the title with 66 team points.
 

Three BGHS runners earn medals

MASON CITY—Quinn, Gavin and Lauren Swift all earned medals for top 20 finishes to highlight the performances of the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears cross-country team on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Newman Invitational.

Pioneers edge North Union, 17-13

MILFORD—Okoboji scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to earn a 17-13 come-from-behind non-district football victory over the North Union Warriors on Friday, Sept. 4.

Wolverines shut out at Kingsley-Pierson in district play

KINGSLEY—Kingsley-Pierson’s stout defense limited West Bend-Mallard to 53 total yards on the evening to earn a 34-0 shutout, eight-man district football win on Friday, Sept. 4, over the purple-and-gold.

Late goal line stand: E-Hawks stop Algona

  EMMETSBURG—Emmetsburg stopped the Algona Bulldogs at the one-yard line on fourth down on Friday, Sept. 4 with under a minute to play to rally for a 34-27 non-district football win over the red-and-black.
The Bulldogs led the entire game until the home team scored a touchdown with 1:27 to play. The visitors quickly marched 85 yards to the E-Hawk one-yard line as Tyler Manske was ruled to lose the football before it crossed the goal line and Emmetsburg recovered in the end zone.

Algona defeats H-D in four sets

ALGONA—Algona opened North Central Conference volleyball play with a league victory in four sets over the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs on Thursday, Sept. 3.
The home team took the first game by the score of 25-21 before Hampton-Dumont came back to tie the match at one set each with a 25-19 win in the second game.

BGHS falls to Bulldogs in 4 sets

LAKE MILLS—For the second straight year, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears took a set from perineal Top of Iowa Conference powerhouse Lake Mills but the Bulldogs prevailed in four sets on Thursday, Sept. 3.
The home team won the opening game by the score of 25-17 and then took a marathon 29-27 victory in set number two. The visitors took the third game by the score of 25-22 and Lake Mills won game number four by an identical score of 25-22.
