Big fourth period leads AHS boys to win

Algona outpointed the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs 15-3 in the final eight minutes of the game as the red-and-black rallied for a 55-46 North Central Conference boys basketball victory.
The home team improved to 8-3 in the conference to stay in tie for the second place with Webster City; they both trail undefeated league leader Clear Lake.

Indians defeat BGHS boys to win league title

Forest City outscored Bishop Garrigan 23-13 in the final eight minutes to earn the Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball title with a 60-53 victory over the black-and-gold.
The contest pitted the two teams with identical 13-2 marks in the league with the winner capturing the title.

Bulldog girls capture NCC title

A huge boast from the bench and some clutch freet hrow shooting in the final eight minutes gave the fifth-rated Algona Bulldog girls basketball squad the North Central Conference title with a 51-44 win over fourth-ranked Clear Lake on Saturday, Feb. 4.
The red-and-black got 24 points off the bench, spurred by 17 points from Kameryn Etherington to overcome three starters going scoreless and sank 11 of 14 charity shots in the final period to gain the victory.

BGHS boys run past warriors

Senior guard Brad Capesius poured in a career-high 24 points to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys basketball squad to an 80-27 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the North Union Warriors
Caspesius tossed in all of his points in the first half, as the black and gold roared to big early advantage and never looked back to improve to 13-4 overall on the season an is now 11-2 in conference games while the Warriors fell to 2-13 overall and are now 2-11 in the league.

Big league road win for BGHS girls at NU

Minus their leading scorer, who was nursing a sore knee, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls basketball team got an outstanding defensive effort from Amanda Miller and used a 22-point fourt quarter to earn a 50-46 win over the North Union Warriors.
The black and gold trailed by four points heading into the final eight minutes before out-scoring the home team 22-14 for the victory in the Top of Iowa Conference battle played on Friday, Jan. 25.

Smidt game winner leads bulldogs to big NCC win

Nicole Smidt scored a basket off an assist from Molly McCauley with just one second to play to give the Algona Bulldog girls basketball team an exciting 49-48 victory over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets.

Poky spoils great comeback

Nathan Aljets' reverse layup with three seconds remaining spoiled a great comeback as the Pocahontas Area Indians edged the Algona Bulldogs by the score of 49-47.
The Indians scored the first 15 points of the contest as Algona missed its first 14 shots of the evening. The Bulldogs slowly fought back and even took the lead in the fourth quarter.

Golden Bears earn fifth straight

Bishop Garrigan won its fifth straight game as the black and gold defeated Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 59-52 in Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball action.
The victory avenged a 34-24 conference loss to the Cardinals on Dec. 10. The Golden Bears improved to 11-4 overall and are tied for second place in the league at 8-3.

Devine captures NCC title at 160; AHS's 102nd

For the seventh straight year, the Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad has at least one North Central Conference individual champion.
Senior Carson Devine kept that streak alive as the Bulldog senior claimed the 160-pound title at the league tournament that took place on Saturday, Jan. 19

Bulldogs improve 11-1; rated 5th

Algona started slow but responded with three strong final quarters to hand Clarion-Goldfield a 46-31 North Central Conference defeat in girls basketball action.
The fifth-ranked Bulldogs improved to 11-1 overall on the year are now 6-1 in conference play, while the Cowgirls fell to 6-7 on the season and are now just 2-4 in the league.

BGHS cruises in rated tilt

The old saying goes, "when you're hot you're hot; when you're not you're not." Bishop Garrigan was hot, and Mason City Newman was not as the ninth-ranked Golden Bears cruised past the 10th-rated Knights by the score of 82-48.
The black and gold connected on 35 of 57 overall field goals for 61.4 percent, hit three of 11 attempts behind the three-point line for 27.2 percent and made nine of 16 free throws for 56.2 percent.

Grimm, Fehr place third at conference tourny

Coleman Grimm and Connor Fehr both finished in third place to highlight the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad at theTwin Lakes Conference tournament on the campus of Buena Vista University Saturday, Jan. 12.

Wall of fame committee makes some changes

The Algona High School Wall of Fame Committee announced a few changes for the 2019 induction ceremonies. This year, the Wall of Fame ceremony will be in conjunction with the first home game of the football season, which is Aug. 30.
In addition, an indoor tailgate supper will be in the high school commons.

Algona runs to NCC road victory

Algona made a long road trip to Hampton a lot more enjoyable, as the Bulldogs came back to town with a 66-45 North Central Conference boys basketball victory over Hampton-Dumont.
The first quarter was even as the visitors held a narrow, 15-14 lead at its conclusion. Algona turned up the defensive pressure in the second period....

Golden Bears top Humboldt 63-55

Sophomore Kaylyn Meyers poured in a career-high 32 points to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls basketball squad to a 63-55 nonconference victory over the Humboldt Wildcats.
Meyers went 11 of 19 from the floor, including two of three behind the three-point arc and made eight of 12 free throws.

Devine wins title at Forest City

Senior Carson Devine won three matches to capture the 160-pound title and highlight the performances of the Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad at the Forest City Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 5.
Teammates Luke McKenna and Cole Lewis were both runners-up, while Cole Johnson was third, and Gavin Meints placed fourth.
