Golden Bears beat West Fork to reach title game

DES MOINES—Bishop Garrigan held West Fork scoreless the first 5:33 of the fourth quarter to blow open an eight-point game and advance to the Class 1A state championship game with a 66-52 victory on Wednesday, March 11, inside the Wells Fargo Arena.

Big runs help Wapsie Valley down Bears for 1A title

DES MOINES—A couple of big runs along with some great defensive strategies helped lead the eighth-seeded Wapsie Valley Warriors to the Class 1A boys state basketball title with a 65-53 victory over the second-seeded Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.
The championship game on Friday, March 13, was played in front of a crowd of approximately 250 people limited by Iowa High School Athletic Union due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak that is sweeping the nation.

Heartbreaking end for runner-up Bears

It was so close they could almost touch it. Yet, it was so far away.
That was the feeling for the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears girls basketball team March 7 as the squad came within an eyelash of winning the Class 1A state championship.

Golden Bears survive huge scare, 55-52

Trailing by six ponts heading into the final eight minutes, fourth-ranked Bishop Garrigan outscored Springville 17-8 in the final frame to rally for a 55-52 opening-round victory in the Class 1A boys state basketball tournment March 9 in Des Moines.

Crooks, Joyce named to first team all state

Saturday was a big day to receive some honors for their play for a pair of talented Bishop Garrigan girls basketball freshmen players, Audi Crooks and Molly Joyce.
In the morning, the two "youngsters" were selected to the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association Class 1A first team, all-state team. The day was topped off that evening at the tournamnet by being chosen to the all-tournament team, where Crooks was picked as the captain.

NU's Lofstrom, AHS' Holmes selected to all-state girls teams

Seniors Cloe Lofstrom of North Union and Abbey Holmes of Algona were chosen to the second team, all-state basketball squads in their respective classes in a vote by members of the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association this past weekend.
Lofstrom was selected as a member of the Class 2A second team squad, while Holmes was picked to the eight-member, second team, all-state unit in Class 3A.

Boys back in 1A tourney field

A dominant second half proved to be the difference, as the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears boys basketball squad earned a trip to the Class 1A state tournament for the seond straight year with a 68-48 victory over the South O'Brien Wolverines on Feb. 29 in Spencer. It was a battle of top-five-rated teams.

Girls return to state tourney

For the second time in the last three years, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears girls basketball squad punched its ticket to play in the Class 1A state tournament.
The black and gold never trailed in a 63-46 victory over the East Buchanan Buccaneers. The fourth-ranked Golden Bears led by 17 points on numerous occasions in the second half.

Bombers knock out Algona in overtime

It was billed as a battle between two evenly matched teams going into Thursday night's Class 3A substate semifinal contest, and it prompted a huge crowd inside the Algona High School gym with lots of entertainment and even four extra minutes of basketball.
But in the end, the Ballard Bombers (17-6) nipped the Algona Bulldogs 73-71 in overtime to advance to Wednesday's substate final at Webster City against the Clear Lake Lions (20-3).

Wahoos advance 29 to state swim meet

The Algona Family YMCA Wahoo swim team boasts its largest number of state-qualifying swimmers with 29 advancing to the Iowa State Competitive Swimming Finals slated for March 7 and 8 in Marshalltown.
The Wahoos will have 26 individual entries and 12 relay teams. To qualify, swimmers must swim a state-qualifying time during the season (November-March).

Hamilton, Lewis earn medals for Algona

They had a great fall on the football field, and a pair of Algona Bulldog wrestlers finished with a winter season to remember, earning medals in their respective weight classes at the Class 2A state wrestling tournament Saturday.
Senior Andrew Hamilton finished sixth at 220 pounds in his first year as a varsity wrestler, and classmate Cole Lewis finished in eighth place at 195 pounds.

Algona boys fight off Hampton-Dumont/CAL

Algona used a 17-0 run in the third quarter to break open a tight game and went on to a 60-50, substate No. 2, opening-round victory over Hampton-Dumont/CAL Feb. 24 at home.
The contest was a seesaw battle early with seven lead changes in the opening frame. The game deadlocked at 12-12 at the conlusion of the first quarter.

Golden Bears advance to 1A regional final

Just another step up on the ladder – that was the focus of fourth-ranked Bishop Garrigan as the Golden Bears girls basketball squad defeated 14th-ranked AGWSR 63-41 Feb. 21 at home. They advanced to the Class 1A regional final at Hampton Feb. 26.
Alyssa Hames drained a triple for the Cougars to open the game's scoring. That was immediately matched by a traditional three-point play by Audi Crooks.

Two Wolverine wrestlers medal

Senior Connor Fehr and junior Donovan Hanson made history by becoming the second and third West Bend-Mallard wrestlers to qualify for the state wrestling tournament.
But the duo was not satisfied with that accomplishment. They bettered it by each earning a medal in their respective Class 1A weight classes over the weekend at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Golden Bears cruise in regional

Two big, early runs netted a 53-0 advantage as fourth-ranked Bishop Garrigan cruised to an 81-29 victory over the Mason City Newman Knights Feb. 18 at home. It was the Class 1A regional girls basketball quarterfinal round.
Both teams started slow, and the contest was scoreless the first 90 seconds. After Katie Noonan and Lily Castle traded treys, the black and gold scored the final 14 points of the opening eight minutes to hold a 17-3 Advantage at the end of the first stanza.
