Wolverines earn first win

It has been a tough season for a young West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ basketball squad, who earned its first victory of the season with a 55-48 win over the Eagle Grove Eagles in a non-conference contest played at West Bend on Friday, Jan. 27.
The visitors started fast in the game and enjoyed a 9-2 lead as the first stanza of play ended.  The Wolverines had a good second quarter, out-scoring the Eagles 17-8 to take a slim 19-17 advantage into the locker room at intermission.

Strong fourth quarter leads BGHS boys past Warriors

Bishop Garrigan out-scored North Union 29-11 in the final eight minutes to earn a 69-54 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball victory in a contest played at Armstrong on Friday, Jan. 27.
Freshman Cade Winkel scored 13 straight points for the Golden Bears in fourth period as the black-and-gold turned a 46-42 deficit into a 55-49 advantage during that stretch in the game.

Fast start leads Warriors

North Union scored the first 13 points of the game and never trailed in earning a key 66-44 Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball victory over Bishop Garrigan in a contest played at Armstrong on Friday, Jan. 27.

Dominick Etherington is NCC champion

It took a little extra time but Dominick Etherington earned the 220-pound title to highlight the performances of the Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad at the North Central Conference championships held in Algona on Saturday, Jan. 21.
Three other Bulldog teammates finished as the runner-ups while three more ended up in third place as the host school finished third in the team race with 169 points.

Late Bulldog rally falls short

After trailing by 22 points with 6:50 remaining in the game, a wild fourth quarter rally by the Algona Bulldogs fell just short as the Pocahontas Area Indians held on for 70-65 non-conference boys’ basketball win over the red-and-black on Thursday, Jan. 19 at Algona.

AHS girls drop rated match-up

In a battle between two ranked Class 3A girls’ basketball squads, top-ranked Pocahontas Area defeated 10th-rated Algona by the final score of 89-57.
The non-conference contest took place at Algona High on Thursday, Jan. 19.  The visitors forced the red-and-black into 24 turnovers and yanked down 13 offensive rebounds in the victory.

Studer is conference runner-up

North Union nailed 11 three-pointers and squeezed out a 56-55 overtime win over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears in a Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball contest played in Algona on Thursday, Jan. 12.
The Warriors led early in the game only to see the home team come back and build an eight-point lead with 3:30 to go in the game.  But the visitors closed out regulation on an 8-0 run, took the lead early in overtime and never trailed in the extra four minute session.

Garrigan hands Warriors first loss

Whitney Hovey’s lay-up with two seconds remaining help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ basketball squad to an exciting 43-42 Top of Iowa Conference victory in overtime.  The contest was played in Algona on Thursday, Jan. 12.
The green-black-and-silver led 42-41 with 10 seconds to play and missed the front end of one-and one free throw try.  Hovey grabbed the rebounded the miss and outleted the basketball to teammate Gracie Behr.

Algona girls basketball team cruises past Iowa Falls-Alden

Algona jumped out to big first quarter advantage and never looked back in cruising to a 57-28 North Central Conference girls’ basketball victory over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets in a game played at Algona High on Friday, Jan. 6.
Abbey Holmes nailed a three-pointer to open the game’s scoring and Aliyah Buscher immediately followed with a steal and a lay-up for a quick 5-0 advantage for the home team.

Algona hands Cadets first league loss

Algona out-scored Iowa Falls-Alden 10-3 in the game’s final 1:20 to take a 65-58 North Central Conference boys’ basketball victory and hand the Cadets its first conference loss of the season.
The league contest was played at Algona High on Friday, Jan. 6 as the red-and-black improved to 4-6 overall and are now 3-2 in conference games while Iowa Falls-Alden fell to 5-3 overall and are 3-1 in the league.

Algona rallies to top Cowboys

Algona won the last four matches of the meet to rally for a 35-28 North Central Conference wrestling match victory over the Clarion-Goldfield Cowboys in a match held on Thursday, Jan. 5 at Algona High School.
Trailing 28-17, the red-and-black got close decisions from Noah Murphy and Dominick Etherington and then received falls by Josh Wegener and Luke McKenna to rally for the exciting win.

2016: A look back at last year’s stories

Johanna Vaske tosses in a game-high 16 points to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears girls’ basketball squad to a hard-fought 37-25 cross-town victory over the Algona Bulldogs.
Led by 24 points by senior guard Landon Rash, the Algona Bulldogs boys’ basketball cruised past cross-town rival Bishop Garrigan 65-44 to remain undefeated on the season.

Bulldogs cruise past Bishop Garrigan girls

Usually in the contest between the two basketball squads in Algona, the cross-town battle is a nail-bitter.  This one was far from that on Thursday, Dec. 22 at Algona High as the Bulldogs cruised past the frigid cold-shooting Bishop Garrigan squad by the score of 58-28.
The red-and-black defense forced the visitors to a tough evening shooting from the floor as the Golden Bears made just 6-of-43 overall field goals for 13.9 percent.
 

Golden Bears edge Bulldogs, 55-53

In the annual cross-town boys’ basketball contest, Bishop Garrigan hit a pair of late free throws to squeeze out a hard-fought 55-53 victory over Algona in a battle played in front of nice crowd at Algona High on Thursday, Dec. 22.
Brad Capesius hit a free throw with 17 seconds left and Chase Winkel sank one two seconds later to break a 53-53 dead-lock to give the visitors the win in battle that saw five ties and 11 lead changes during the contest.

North Union tops Wolverines, 42-24

North Union picked up its third victory of the 2016-2017 season with a 42-24 win over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines in a non-conference match wrestled in Swea City on Thursday, Dec. 15.
The Warriors lost a 60-18 Top of Iowa Conference match to the Eagle Grove Eagles before losing a 43-42 non-conference match to the Manson Northwest Webster Cougars in a match that came down to the criteria of most first points scored to decide the winner of the dual.
