Sam Fehr leads WBM to second win

WEST BEND—Sophomore Sam Fehr poured in 20 points and yanked down 11 rebounds to help lead the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys basketball team to their second victory of the season with a 54-53 non-conference win over the Eagle Grove Eagles.

WB-M girls improve to 6-2 overall

CHURDAN—West Bend-Mallard improved to 6-2 overall on the year by handing Paton-Churdan just its second loss of the season with a 41-34 non-conference girls basketball victory over the Rockets on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
The contest was deadlocked at 8-8 after the first eight minutes of action before the home team eased out to a 22-17 advantage at halftime. The purple-and-gold trailed 30-28 at the end of the third period before rallying to outscore Paton-Churdan 13-4 in the fourth quarter.

Warriors take conference road win

EAGLE GROVE—Starting the new year on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 5, the North Union Warrior girls basketball squad earned a 57-34 Top of Iowa Conference win over the Eagle Grove Eagles.
The Warriors started fast with a 20-10 advantage at the conclusion of the first period. The green-black-and-silver also enjoyed leads of 31-20 at the end at halftime and 39-26 as the fourth quarter began.

No. 1 Golden Bears win at West Hancock

BRITT—The top-ranked team in Class 1A raced to a 24-4 lead in the opening frame and never looked back on Friday, Jan. 8 in a 62-54 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball victory for Bishop Garrigan over No. 6 (2A) West Hancock.
The black-and-gold held the big lead for most of the contest before the home team scored nine of the game’s last 12 points to make the final score look much closer than the game was.

5-0 Bulldogs alone in first in the NCC

ALGONA—Algona remained alone in first place atop in the North Central Conference boys basketball standings with a 51-43 victory over the St. Edmond Gaels on Friday, Jan. 8. The Bulldogs improved to 7-3 overall on the year and are now 5-0 in conference games.

Bulldog boys beat C-G, now 4-0 in NCC play

The Algona Bulldog boys basketball team remained perfect in North Central Conference play so far this season with a 50-38 league victory on Tuesday, Dec. 22, over the Clarion-Goldfield Cowboys.

Winkel pours in 51 in league win over Bison

Senior center Angelo Winkel poured in a career-high 51 points to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears boys basketball team on Friday, Dec. 22, to an 84-60 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the North Iowa Bison.

North Union wrestlers establish record for wins in a season

The North Union Warriors wrestling squad broke the school record for wins a season by going 1-2 in a Top of Iowa Conference quadrangular on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
The green-black-and-silver lost to Forest City by the score of 58-24 before topping Rockford by the count of 48-18. The Warriors also fell to Nashua-Plainfield by the score of 60-30.

Golden Bears move to 10-0 on the year

Bishop Garrigan held the North Iowa Lady Bison scoreless the first quarter en route to a 95-19 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball victory on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
The win improves the top-ranked black-and-gold’s overall record to 10-0 on the season and the Golden Bears are a perfect 6-0 in the conference standings.
The visitors took control of the league contest early as they built a commanding 31-0 lead at the conclusion of the first stanza. 
 

No. 14 Cowgirls defeat Algona

A nice effort by the Algona Bulldogs girls basketball squad was not enough as the 14th-rated squad in Class 3A Clarion-Goldfield Cowgirls handed the Bulldogs a 44-27 North Central Conference defeat on Tuesday, Dec. 22.
The first eight minutes was a defensive struggle as the contest was deadlocked 5-5 at the quarter break.

Golden Bears rally to top Algona boys

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan outscored Algona by eight points in the final eight minutes to rally for a 59-55 non-conference boys basketball crosstown victory over the red-and-black on Saturday, Dec. 19.
The black-and-gold trailed by 10 points in the third period before rallying to tie the contest with two minutes to play.

Top-ranked BGHS girls run past Bulldogs

ALGONA—The annual crosstown girls basketball contest pitted a veteran Bishop Garrigan squad against a young Algona team on Saturday, Dec. 19. The veteran squad built a big early lead and the top-ranked Golden Bears earned a 79-22 non-conference win.
Bishop Garrigan scored the first nine points of the game. Audi Crooks scored four of those before A’Lailah Perry got the home team on the scoreboard with three minutes gone in the contest.
 

Belmond-Klemme defeats Warriors

ARMSTRONG—Belmond-Klemme jumped out to big lead early and never looked back in a 63-46 Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball win on Tuesday, Dec. 15, over the North Union Warriors.
The visitors led 23-10 at the conclusion of the first quarter and took a 35-17 advantage heading into the locker room at intermission. The Broncos also led 53-28 at the end of the third quarter of action.
 

NU girls 6-3 at Christmas break

ARMSTRONG—The North Union Warrior girls’ basketball squad improved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play on Monday, Dec. 21 with a 54-21 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Lake Mills Bulldogs.
The green-black-and-silver led 13-2 at the conclusion of the opening frame and extended their advantage to 32-12 at intermission. The home team enjoyed a 45-18 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
 

WB-M girls 4-2 at holiday break

ALTA—West Bend-Mallard used a balanced scoring attack to earn a 55-41 Twin Lakes Conference girls’ basketball win on Friday, Dec. 18, over the Alta-Aurelia Warriors.
With the victory, the purple-and-gold head into the Christmas break with an overall record of 4-2 and improved to 1-1 in conference games this season.

North Iowa rolls past Wolverines

BUFFALO CENTER—North Iowa jumped out to a nine-point first quarter and never looked back in a 79-46 non-conference boys’ basketball victory on Thursday, Dec. 17 over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.
The home team built a 21-12 advantage at the conclusion of the first eight minutes of play and extended that lead to 52-24 at halftime. The Bison also enjoyed a commanding 70-35 lead at the end of the third period.
