AHS girls earn fourth NCC win

ALGONA—All season long the trademark for a young Algona Bulldog girls basketball team is playing great defense. That fact was on full display on Friday, Feb. 5 as that strong defense led the Bulldogs to a 28-23 victory over the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs.
The home team led by the score of 10-5 at the conclusion of the first period and held a 14-10 advantage at intermission. Algona also led 23-13 heading into the fourth quarter of action.

WB-M girls notch 10th win of season

MANSON—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls basketball squad earned their 10th victory of the 2020-2021 season on Tuesday, Feb. 2 with a 44-26 Twin Lakes Conference win over the Manson Northwest Webster Cougars.
Both Kayla Hoskins and Monika Fehr tossed in 12 points to lead the purple-and-gold in scoring as Kierstin Montag added eight points closely followed by Rachel Fehr with seven points.

Warrior girls earn 13th victory

ARMSTRONG—The North Union Warrior girls basketball squad earned their 13th victory of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 2 with a 75-35 Top of Iowa Conference win over the Eagle Grove Eagles.
Four players reached double figures for North Union as Sam Nielsen led the way with 20 points closely followed by Olivia Von Bank with 19 points while teammates Vanessa Von Bank and Naomi Jones both added 10 points.

NU boys win second game of year

ARMSTRONG—Eleven different players dented the scoring column as the North Union Warrior boys basketball captured their second victory of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 2 with a 72-47 Top of Iowa Conference win over the Eagle Grove Eagles.
Four players reached double figures led by Gage Madden with 20 points as Aidan Fries chipped in with 14 points with Nick Schiltz adding 11 points and Carter Anderson had 10 points.
 

WB-M boys defeat Cougars, 43-35

MANSON—Sam Fehr had a huge night to help lead the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys basketball team on Tuesday, Feb. 2 to a 43-35 Twin Lakes Conference victory over the Manson Northwest Webster Cougars.
The home team led 14-11 at the conclusion of the first quarter of play before the Wolverines rallied to take a 22-18 advantage at intermission. The visitors also led 31-27 heading into the fourth period of action.

Golden Bear girls claim league title

FOREST CITY—Forest City came out hot early behind the three-point arc by making four long shots in the first 10 minutes of the game but top-ranked Bishop Garrigan hit full stride in the second period and never looked back in a 64-29 win over the Indians.

Balanced scoring leads Bulldogs to victory

ALGONA—A balanced scoring that featured four players in double figures and 10 different players scoring led the Algona Bulldog boys’ basketball to a 66-44 North Central Conference victory on Friday, Feb. 5, over the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs.
Garrett Goche led the locals in scoring with 16 points while teammate Kyle Simpson tossed 12 points and both Tyler Manske and James Wartick contributed 11 points.

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad split a pair of meets on Thursday, Jan. 28, to close out their 2020-21 regular season schedule with a dual meet record of 17-6 overall and 3-4 in North Central Conference matches.
 
ALGONA—Algona ended a brief two-game losing streak with a solid performance on the road on Thursday, Jan. 28, to earn a 68-58 North Central Conference boys basketball victory over the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs.

West Bend-Mallard Sports Wrap

FORT DODGE—West Bend-Mallard earned a non-conference girls basketball victory on Thursday, Jan. 28, with a 45-27 win over the St. Edmond Gaels.
Kierstin Montag led the purple-and-gold in scoring with 11 points and Monika Fehr added 10 points. 
 
EMMETSBURG—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys basketball team earned their third victory of the 2020-2021 season with a 38-34 Twin Lakes Conference win over the Emmetsburg E-Hawks.

Bishop Garrigan Sports Wrap

ARMSTRONG—Bishop Garrigan used a 9-0 run to break a 30-30 deadlock to end the first half and then outscored North Union by 10 points in the second half on Friday, Jan. 29, in a 78-59 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the green-black-and-silver.
 

North Union Sports Wrap

SHEFFIELD—North Union concluded the most successful dual meet season in the school’s history with an overall match record of 12-18 by going 2-1 in three Top of Iowa Conference matches on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
The green-black-and-silver won a 42-24 match over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura along with a win over West Fork by the identical score but fell to Northwood-Kensett by the score of 42-36.
 

Degner 8th at state

   CORALVILLE—For the second straight season, Algona’s Sophie Degner earned a medal at the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials girls state tournament held this past weekend to highlight the performances of four area young ladies at the meet.
Degner finished in seventh place in last year’s first-ever state tournament and followed that up with her eighth-place showing in this year’s meet at 152 pounds.

Three Dogs second in NCC

   WEBSTER CITY—A trio of Algona Bulldog wrestlers placed second in the annual North Central Conference wrestling tournament held on Saturday, Jan. 23.
Jacob Zabka, Brandon Harris and Hunter Berry each were runner-ups.

Nelson erupts for 31 in win over Poky

   ALGONA—Senior guard Noah Nelson erupted for a career-high 31 points on Thursday, Jan. 21, to lead the Algona Bulldog boys basketball team to a 70-61 non-conference victory over the Pocahontas Area Indians.
Nelson nailed 11 of 19 overall field goals, including draining seven of 14 attempts behind the three-point arc on the evening and nailed both of his charity shot opportunities.

Kruse runner-up in Top of Iowa meet

OSAGE—Senior Trevor Kruse was the runner-up at 285 pounds to highlight the North Union Warriors wrestling performances at the Top of Iowa Conference tournament Saturday, Jan. 23.
The green-black-and-silver finished in 10th place overall.

Cadets edge Algona by three points

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldog girls basketball squad fell three points shy of their third victory of the season as the red-and-black fell to the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets by the score of 53-50 in a North Central Conference contest on Friday, Jan. 22.
The home team raced out to a 12-9 advantage at the end of the first eight minutes of action and the game was deadlocked at 21-21 at intermission. The Cadets eased out to a 37-32 lead at the end of the third period before going onto the win.
