HULL—Algona gave two big kickoff returns and a long pass play for touchdowns in a 58-21 non-district loss on Friday, Sept. 17, to the third-ranked Boyden Hull/Rock Valley Nighthawks.
The home team opened the scoring with a 23-yard pass play on their opening drive before the red-and-black answered with 75-yard, seven-play drive to deadlock the game as Trevon Smith hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Manske.
NORTHWOOD—For the second straight week, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines football squad were on the wrong end of the scoreboard in a very close contest.
On Friday, Sept. 17, the purple-and-gold fell to the Northwood-Kensett Vikings by the score of 35-28 as a big 28-point second quarter by the home team proved to be the difference in the eight-man district contest.
ARMSTRONG—Bishop Garrigan and North Union hooked up in an entertaining Top of Iowa Conference volleyball match on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
The home team started fast in the conference match winning the first game 25-17 and the second set by the score of 25-22 before the black-and-gold to take game number three by the count of 25-15.
ALGONA—Sixth-ranked Newell-Fonda used their big play offense to explode for 59 points in a battle of two unbeaten eight-man football teams on Friday, Sept. 17, as the Mustangs defeated the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears by the score of 59-14.
GRAETTINGER—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines volleyball team picked a great time to win their first four matches of the 2021 season on Saturday, Sept. 18, as the purple-and-gold placed first at the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven Ayrshire tournament.
LAKE MILLS—Running back Bryer Prochniak rushed for 266 yards and scored five touchdowns to lead the North Union Warriors football team on Friday, Sept. 17, to a 44-12 Class A district win over the Lake Mills Bulldogs.
SIOUX RAPIDS—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys and girls cross-country squads competed in the Chris Smith Invitational held at the Sioux Rapids Golf Course on Thursday, Sept. 16.
The purple-and-gold boys had four runners and did not enough to post a team score while the girls’ squad had just two runners on Thursday.
PERRY—The Algona swim team went on the road traveling south on Tuesday, Sept. 14, and fell to the Perry Bluejays by the score of 90-51. Algona did not win any events but was the runner-up in six events.
Brooke Ludwig was second in both the 500-yard freestyle race in 6:36.64 and the 10-yard backstroke with a time of 1:14.12 as did Cathryn Houge in the 200 IM in 2:50.63 and the 100 breaststroke with a clocking of 1:24.86.
STORM LAKE—Moriah Knapp placed fifth at the Storm Lake Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at the Sunrise Point Golf Course to highlight the performances of the Algona Bulldog girls’ cross-country squad.
The red-and-black finished in seventh place in the team standings.
STORM LAKE—A third place finish by junior Ryan Stundahl highlighted the performances of the Algona Bulldog boys’ cross-country team on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at the Storm Lake Invitational.
The Bulldog boys finished in seventh place overall in the 13-team field.
ALGONA—Clarion-Goldfield/Dows handed the Algona Bulldogs’ volleyball team their first North Central Conference loss on Thursday, Sept. 9, in three straight games.
The Cowgirls won a tight opening set by the score of 25-23 victory before taking the second game 25-8. They won the league match with a 25-13 win in set number three.
ALGONA—Amassing 524 total yards during the evening, No. 9 ranked Algona cruised to 47-13 non-district football victory over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals on Friday, Sept. 10.
SAINT ANSGAR—Saint Ansgar, ranked No. 10 in the latest Class A Radio Iowa football poll, scored the final 24 points of the game to rally in the fourth quarter for a 40-26 district victory on Friday, Sept. 10, over the North Union Warriors.
LAKE VIEW—East Sac County earned a Twin Lakes Conference volleyball match win on Thursday, Sept. 9, over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines in three straight sets.
BOONE—The Algona swim team dropped a double duel on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Boone. The red-and-black fell to the Perry Bluejays by the score of 51-38 and the Boone Toreadors by the count of 80-21.
