Happy homecoming for Bulldogs with a 28-27 win

ALGONA—Algona turned away a North Polk two-point conversion try with 47 seconds left to play in the game to secure an exciting, 28-27, Class 3A district opening victory on Friday, Sept. 24, over the Comets.
The red-and-black got huge nights from seniors Trevon Smith and Tyler Manske in the win and homecoming king Wyatt Garman sealed the deal in the final minute by recovering an attempted onside kick by the visitors.

Ludwig wins 500-yard free

ALGONA—Brooke Ludwig won the 500-yard freestyle race to highlight the performances of the Algona swim team on Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the Algona Family YMCA.
The red-and-black fell to the Spencer Tigers in the meet by the score of 129-38. Ludwig was the lone first place winner as she touched the pad first in the longest race of the evening with a season-best clocking of 6:24.32.

Stundahl third; AHS boys host BG, NU, WB-M, others in home XC meet

ALGONA—Ryan Stundahl of Algona placed third overall to highlight the performances of the four area cross-country teams on Monday, Sept. 27 at the 21-team Algona Invitational held at the River Road Golf Club.
Algona finished in eighth place in the team standings with a team total of 225 points with Bishop Garrigan taking 13th with 338 as both North Union and West Bend-Mallard did not have enough runners for a team score.

Mission accomplished for Knapp; AHS girls host BG, NU, WB-M, others in home XC meet

ALGONA—For the past two seasons, Algona’s Moriah Knapp has been trying to get under the 20:00 mark in her cross-country races and came very close on different occasions.
The Bulldog junior final achieved the feat on Monday, Sept. 27 at the Algona Invitational held at the River Road Golf Club to highlight the performances of the four area girls’ cross-country squads.

Algona is 3-3 at Boone tourney

BOONE—The Algona Bulldogs volleyball squad went 3-3 against some very good competition at the Boone tournament on Saturday, Sept. 25. The Bulldogs played against larger schools in several matches.

BGHS 2-3 in own tourney

ALGONA—The Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears volleyball squad hosted the six-team BGHS tournament on Saturday, Sept. 25, and went 2-3 on the day in tightly contest tourney.
Saint Ansgar won the tournament 5-0 closely followed by Garner-Hayfield/Ventura at 4-1. Bishop Garrigan, Belmond-Klemme and Southeast Valley all went 2-3 on the day while West Hancock was 0-5 in the tourney.

No. 7 Mustangs stampede WB-Mallard

NEWELL—Newell-Fonda showed why the squad is ranked seventh in Class 1A in the latest rankings with a three-set victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines on Thursday, Sept. 23.
The Mustangs won the opening set by the score of 25-14 before taking the second set by the count of 25-9. The blue-and-white ended the match with a 25-6 win in game number three.

Two second half scores lead Titans past WB-M

WEST BEND—On night when the West Bend-Mallard football field was renamed Koy Goodchild Field, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire broke a 12-12 deadlock at halftime with a pair of second half scores to earn a 26-12 win over the purple-and-gold on Friday, Sept. 24, in eight-man district play.

Fast start leads No. 1 Eagles over North Union

ARMSTRONG—Top-ranked West Hancock took full advantage of two early turnovers for a quick 22-0 lead on Friday, Sept. 24, and never looked back in a 42-7 Class A district football win over the North Union Warriors.

Harris-Lake Park stops Golden Bears

LAKE PARK—Some people think that in eight-man football games you do not see a lot of defense played. That group of people should have been at the Bishop Garrigan and Harris-Lake Park contest on Friday, Sept. 24.
The home team Wolves only allowed a safety on a bad snap on a punt in a 19-2 district number two victory over the black-and-gold squad that allowed just 37 yards rushing in 29 attempts.

Wolverines top Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire

WEST BEND—Coming off a tournament championship over the weekend, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines volleyball squad picked up their first conference match win over Tuesday, Sept. 21.
The purple-and-gold defeated Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in three straight sets by the scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-23.

League leader Lake Mills tops Warriors in three

LAKE MILLS—For the second straight evening, the North Union Warriors volleyball squad faced an undefeated Top of Iowa Conference foe on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
The Lake Mills Bulldogs were the opponent that night and the Bulldogs defeated the green-black-and-silver by the scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-14.

AHS goes 3-2 at Forest City Tourney

FOREST CITY—Playing in the Forest City volleyball tournament on Saturday, Sept. 18, the Algona Bulldogs squad went 3-2 in matches during the day.

Big plays hurt Bulldogs in non-district loss to Nighthawks

HULL—Algona gave two big kickoff returns and a long pass play for touchdowns in a 58-21 non-district loss on Friday, Sept. 17, to the third-ranked Boyden Hull/Rock Valley Nighthawks.
The home team opened the scoring with a 23-yard pass play on their opening drive before the red-and-black answered with 75-yard, seven-play drive to deadlock the game as Trevon Smith hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Manske.

Vikings edge Wolverines, 35-28

NORTHWOOD—For the second straight week, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines football squad were on the wrong end of the scoreboard in a very close contest.
On Friday, Sept. 17, the purple-and-gold fell to the Northwood-Kensett Vikings by the score of 35-28 as a big 28-point second quarter by the home team proved to be the difference in the eight-man district contest.

North Union outlasts Bishop Garrigan in five sets, 15-13 in fifth

ARMSTRONG—Bishop Garrigan and North Union hooked up in an entertaining Top of Iowa Conference volleyball match on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
The home team started fast in the conference match winning the first game 25-17 and the second set by the score of 25-22 before the black-and-gold to take game number three by the count of 25-15.
