Cadets edge Algona by three points

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldog girls basketball squad fell three points shy of their third victory of the season as the red-and-black fell to the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets by the score of 53-50 in a North Central Conference contest on Friday, Jan. 22.
The home team raced out to a 12-9 advantage at the end of the first eight minutes of action and the game was deadlocked at 21-21 at intermission. The Cadets eased out to a 37-32 lead at the end of the third period before going onto the win.

No. 9 Eagles defeat North Union

ARMSTRONG—West Hancock stayed alone in second place in the conference two games behind league leader Bishop Garrigan with a 63-51 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball victory over the North Union Warriors on Friday, Jan. 22.
The ninth-ranked team in Class 2A led 17-11 at the conclusion of the first stanza and took a 35-29 advantage to the locker room at halftime. The Eagles also led 49-38 heading into the fourth period of action.

No. 1 Golden Bears remain perfect

EAGLE GROVE—Top-ranked Bishop Garrigan remained undefeated in the season by cruising to an 81-20 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball victory over the Eagle Grove Eagles on Friday, Jan. 22.
The black-and-gold led 17-4 as the first stanza clock expired and extended their advantage to 42-11 at intermission. The visitors carried a commanding 59-15 lead into the final quarter of action.

WB-M girls defeat Titans 41-25

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard earned their seventh victory of the season with a 41-25 Twin Lakes Conference girls basketball win on Friday, Jan. 23 over the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans.
The home team held a narrow 10-8 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter and took a 19-15 advantage to the locker room at halftime. The Wolverines extend the lead to 34-21 after three periods of basketball.

Winkel tosses in 37 in BGHS win

EAGLE GROVE—Senior center Angelo Winkel poured in 37 points to help the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears boys basketball team on Friday, Jan. 22, to a 73-44 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Eagle Grove Eagles.
The black-and-gold led 14-12 at the end of the first period before increasing their advantage to 35-23 at intermission. The Golden Bears held a comfortable 59-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
 

Bison defeat NU boys 69-62

ARMSTRONG—Despite playing one of its best games of the season, the North Union Warrior boys basketball team dropped a 69-62 Top of Iowa Conference contest on Thursday, Jan, 21, to the North Iowa Bison.
North Iowa held a narrow 14-13 at the end of the first period and took a 35-27 advantage to the locker room at halftime. The Bison also led 48-36 heading into the final quarter of play.

Titans trip WB-M boys, 47-32

WEST BEND—Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire handed the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys basketball team a 47-32 Twin Lakes Conference defeat on Friday, Jan. 22.
The Titans held a 14-7 lead at the end of the first period of action and increased their advantage to 31-13 at halftime. The visitors also enjoyed a 41-27 lead after three quarters of basketball.
Collin Montag was the only purple-and-gold player in double figures with 17 points.
 

BGHS improves to 6-3 in league

Bishop Garrigan improved to 6-3 in Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball contests with the latest win coming on Tuesday, Jan. 12 with a 68-47 league victory over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos.
Angelo Winkel led the black-and-gold in scoring with 24 points and was joined in double figures by Meis with 21 points.

Hanson earns Twin Lakes title for Wolverines

Senior Donavon Hanson claimed the individual title at 113 pounds to highlight the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Twin Lakes Conference meet.
The purple-and-gold finished in ninth place in the team standings with 88 points.

No. 1 BGHS gallops past Broncos

Belmond-Klemme scored the first two points of the game but top-ranked Bishop Garrigan answered with the next 32 points and went on to an 85-24 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball victory over the Broncos. The victory was career win number 200 for Golden Bear head coach Brandon Schwab.

WB-M girls drop low-scoring contest

In a low-scoring non-conference girls basketball contest, West Bend-Mallard fell to the Emmetsburg, 34-28.
Kierstin Montag led a balanced Wolverine scoring attack with eight points.

E-Hawks fly past WB-M boys

Emmetsburg used a big third quarter to blow open a three-point game at halftime and went on to a 63-42 non-conference boys basketball victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.
Collin Montag was the only player in double figures for the Wolverines with 18 points.

NU boys, girls split in non-conference tilts

The North Union boys lost a 63-51 non-conference boys basketball contest on Tuesday, Jan. 12, to former league opponent Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire. Aidan Fries poured in a team-leading 16 points to lead the Warriors.

Warriors wrestle at Lake Mills Duals

North Union competed in the Lake Mills Duals on Saturday, Jan. 16 and came home with a 1-3 record on the day of wrestling.
The green-black-and-silver opened the day with a 47-30 loss to North Butler/Clarksville before falling to Lake Mills by the score 75-6. The Warriors fell 64-18 to the Southeast Polk junior varsity and ended the day with a 54-18 win over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.
 

Zabka, Harris win South Hardin titles

Jacob Zabka and Brandon Harris won individual titles to highlight the performances on Saturday, Jan. 16, of the Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad at the Storm Invitational.
The red-and-black advanced six wrestlers into the championship matches. The team finished third in the team standings with 168 points.

BGHS moving to 8-man football

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan’s football program will play in the eight-man ranks for the 2021 season. The Bishop Garrigan school board recently approved the change from 11-man to eight-man football for the next cycle from the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA).
