Algona YMCA Wahoos excel at state

ALGONA— On March 5-6, the Algona Wahoo swim team competed at the State YMCA swim meet. This season 21 swimmers qualified for a variety of individual events and relays. This season, the Wahoos were able to take 45 total events to state. This was exciting as it almost doubled the total number of events from the previous season. 

Bulldog girls compete at Dickinson Relays

CEDAR FALLS—A group of eight Algona Bulldog girls’ track members competed in seven different events at the annual Dickinson Relays in the UNI-Dome on Monday, March 7.

Junior Moriah Knapp was the top place winner for the red-and-black as she finished in sixth place in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:03.22 and also ended up in 23rd place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:19.56.

GIRLS STATE HOOPS: Bishop Garrigan Beats MMCRU, 52-49, To Win 1A Title

Even without a big game from star center Audi Crooks, Bishop Garrigan of Algona still had enough to win a state championship.

But it sure wasn’t easy.

Everyone played a role as Bishop Garrigan erased the disappointment of championship game losses the last two years with a 52-49 victory over MMCRU for the Class 1A title and a wrap to the 2022 state tournament.

Manske selected to play in Shrine Bowl

ALGONA—Senior quarterback Tyler Manske of Algona has been selected to play in the 50th annual Iowa Shrine Bowl for the North team on Saturday, July 23, at 4 p.m. at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

The North squad will be coached by head coach Steve Milder of West Central Maynard along with assistant coaches Tim Laven of Linn Marr, Jim Tighe of Spencer, Derrick Ellman of Humboldt, Chad Beerman of Waukon, Brad Schmid of Waterloo Columbus and Eric Walkingstick of Akron-Westfield.

NCC Announces Girls All-Conference Hoops Team; Top of Iowa West announces Boys and Girls All-Conference Teams

Price goes 1-2 at state meet

DES MOINES—North Union freshman Landon Price went 1-2 at 113 pounds at the Class 1A state wrestling meet on Feb. 17-19. The freshman concluded a nice 2022 campaign with a season record of 37-5.

Price opened the tournament on Thursday with a tough draw against top-ranked Corbin Reisz of Logan-Magnolia and lost to him by fall in 2:47.

Fourth-ranked Spencer ends Algona’s season

SPENCER—Fourth-ranked Spencer broke open a three-point game at halftime with a big second half to hand the Algona Bulldogs a 78-45 defeat on Monday, Feb. 21, in the opening round of the Class 3A substate boys basketball tournament.

Wilson, Slagle each win one match at state tourney

DES MOINES—Algona freshmen Isaac Wilson and Tate Slagle went 1-2 at the Class 2A state wrestling tournament on Feb. 17-19 to gain valuable experience for the future. The Bulldogs finished in 51st place overall in the team standings with six points.

Wilson had a tough opening round match against second-ranked Carter West of Burlington Notre Dame and lost by the score of 7-0.

Hot-shooting Lynx top Algona 64-59

WEBSTER CITY—A hot-shooting Webster City Lynx boys basketball team fought off a pesky Algona Bulldogs squad on Tuesday, Feb. 15, in a North Central Conference contest by the score of 64-59 in the team’s regular season finale.

The Lynx were on fire on the night from the floor, connecting on 24 of 38 attempts from the field in the victory for 63.2 percent and hit six of 11 three-point field goal tries.

Golden Bears roll past WB-M 63-20

ALGONA—Would a week layoff hurt the second-ranked Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ basketball team in their Class 1A regional opener on Tuesday, Feb. 15?

The black-and-gold made sure that the answer to that question was no as they started the game with an early 31-0 run and cruised to a 63-20 victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.

Golden Bears advance to another regional final

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan advanced to the Class 1A regional final for the third straight year and the fourth in the last five seasons with a 70-34 thrashing of the Nashua-Plainfield Huskies on Friday, Feb. 18, in the Class 1A regional semifinal round.

Cold-shooting Warriors fall to Titans 44-31

ARMSTRONG—Sioux Central outscored North Union 16-5 in the final eight minutes to break open a two-point game and went on to a 44-31 Class 2A regional girls’ basketball opening round win over the green-black-and-silver on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

The Titans led 11-6 at the conclusion of the first period but the Warriors took a 22-17 advantage to the locker room at intermission. Sioux Central led 28-26 after three quarters of basketball.

BGHS girls defeat top-ranked Wolverines

ALGONA—Second-ranked Bishop Garrigan ended the 2021-2022 regular season with a huge win as they knocked off top-ranked and defending Class 2A state champion Dike-New Hartford by the score of 50-45 on Tuesday, Feb. 8.

Indians edge Algona in regional opener

FOREST CITY—Forest City scored the final five points of the game to rally for a 45-41 victory over the Algona Bulldogs in the opening round of the Class 3A girls’ regional basketball tournament.

North Iowa tops Warriors in district quarterfinals

GRAETTINGER—North Union scored just nine points in the second half in a 50-28 Class 1A district quarterfinal round loss on Monday, Feb. 14 to the North Iowa Bison.

The Warriors led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter before North Iowa took a narrow 20-19 advantage to the locker room at halftime. The Bison extended the lead to 32-23 at the conclusion of the third quarter of play.

Bishop Garrigan falls to Titans in district play

GRAETTINGER—Bishop Garrigan hung tough early but a cold shooting evening for the floor hurt the squad in a 70-53 loss on Monday, Feb. 14 in a Class 1A district quarterfinal round contest against the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans.

The contest was deadlocked at 18-18 at the conclusion of the first period before the home team took a 35-28 advantage to the locker room at intermission. The Titans increased the lead to 58-42 at the end of the third quarter.
