AHS wrestlers improve to 16-3 with 3 NCC wins

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad improved to 16-3 overall on the year with a trio of non-conference victories on Tuesday, Jan. 11.

The red-and-black defeated Blue Earth, Minn. by the score of 39-36 before topping Estherville-Lincoln Central 64-15 and beat Okoboji/Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn by the count of 67-12.

Five wrestlers went 3-0 during the evening in Jacob Zabka (113), Tate Slagle (120), Hayden Thompson (132), Brandon Harris (152) and Cohen Reffer (220).

North Union girls defeat #7 Eagles

ARMSTRONG—The North Union Warrior girls basketball squad strengthened their grip on second place in the Top of Iowa Conference standings with a big 48-39 win over No. 7 ranked (Class 2A) West Hancock on Thursday, Jan. 13.

The green-black-and-silver defense was outstanding all night long, limiting the Eagles to 25 percent shooting from the floor during the contest.

Wolverines’ Massner runner-up in TLC meet

ROCKWELL CITY—Senior Aaron Massner placed second at 138 pounds to highlight the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad on Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Twin Lakes Conference wrestling tournament.

The purple-and-gold scored a total of 67.5 points to finish in ninth place in the standings as the Emmetsburg E-Hawks were crowned conference champions with a team total of 200.

AHS drops non-league road tilt to Spencer

SPENCER—Stepping outside of North Central Conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 11, the Algona Bulldog girls basketball squad fell to the Spencer Tigers 72-32 inside the spacious Spencer Fieldhouse.

The Tigers, ranked 11th in Class 4A, shot well during the evening by making 27 of 50 overall field goals in the contest, including seven shots behind the three point arc and went a perfect 11 of 11 from the charity stripe.

BGHS girls notch 11th win of season

EAGLE GROVE—Limiting Eagle Grove to single digits in the scoring department in each quarter, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls basketball squad rolled to a 60-24 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Eagles on Thursday, Jan. 13.

The black-and-gold led 18-9 at the end of the first frame and increased that advantage to 35-15 at intermission. The visitors held a commanding 53-21 lead at the conclusion of the third period.

North Union rolls past Titans, 55-24

ARMSTRONG—Naomi Jones poured in a career-high 21 points to help lead the North Union Warrior girls basketball squad on Tuesday, Jan. 11, to 55-24 non-conference victory over the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans.

The Warriors led 13-3 at the conclusion of the first period and never looked back. The green-black-and-silver also led 24-17 at intermission and 47-22 at the end of the third quarter.

Late triple dooms NU

ARMSTRONG—Kory Hough drained a three-pointer from the top of the circle with 16 seconds remaining on Tuesday, Jan. 11, to give Graetttinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans to a narrow 60-59 non-conference win over the North Union Warriors.

The home team led 55-48 with 3:54 to play in the fourth quarter and 57-51 with 3:24 to go in the contest before the Titans put on a late rally for the victory.

AHS boys earn 2nd NCC win

ALGONA—Algona started slow by giving up the first five points of the game but dominated after that in a 66-53 North Central Conference boys basketball win on Thursday, Jan. 13, over Hampton-Dumont.

The home team led 20-14 at the end of the first period and enjoyed a 44-33 advantage at halftime as Algona led 55-43 heading into the fourth quarter of action.

Two wins in a row for BGHS

EAGLE GROVE—Bishop Garrigan survived a barrage of three-pointers by Eagle Grove in the opening frame to rally for a 62-47 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Eagles on Thursday, Jan. 13.

The home nailed five triples in the opening eight minutes to take an early 14-2 advantage and led 20-8 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

Warriors win three league matches

SWEA CITY—The North Union Warriors wrestling squad won a trio of Top of Iowa Conference wrestling matches on Thursday, Jan. 13.

The green-black-and-silver defeated Belmond-Klemme by the score of 52-24 before beating Mason City Newman 45-35 and topped West Fork by the score of 66-9.

Going 3-0 on the evening were Ethan Preston (106), Landon Price (113), Gavyn Morphew (132), Dalton Tobin (145), Kaden Laabs (152) and Kaleb Lufkin (182).

WB-M wrestlers drop pair of matches

SIOUX RAPIDS—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad lost a pair of non-conference matches on Thursday, Jan. 13.

The purple-and-gold fell to the Southeast Valley Jaguars by the score of 56-15 and lost to the host school Rebels by the score of 36-30.

Aaron Massner (138) and Ethan Zaugg (195) both went 2-0 while teammate Logan Grimm (152) won his only match of the night.

AHS girls fall to H-D, 60-38

ALGONA—Hampton-Dumont stayed in the thick of the North Central Conference girls basketball race on Thursday, Jan. 13, with a 60-38 victory over the Algona Bulldogs.

The visiting Bulldogs improved to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the league while the home town Bulldogs fell to 4-8 overall in the year and is now 3-3 in conference contests.

Golden Bears cruise to league win over Broncos

BELMOND—Second-ranked Bishop Garrigan used a 22-0 run to put the game away and went onto a 65-37 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball win on Tuesday, Jan. 11, over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos.

The visitors led 16-6 at the end of the first frame and took a 33-21 advantage to the locker room at intermission. The black-and-gold also led 46-27 heading into the fourth quarter of action.
