Class 1A boys' district pairings released

BOONE—The Class 1A district boys’ basketball pairings were released last week for the three area squads as they head into post-season action. The Class 3A pairings that involve Algona will be released next week.

Girls’ regional basketball tournament pairings are released

DES MOINES—The post-season pairings were released last week for the four area girls’ basketball squads by the Iowa Girls Athletic Union as they now know their path to Wells-Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Bishop Garrigan, North Union and West Bend-Mallard all will play their first contest on their home court while Algona will begin their post-season trek on the road.

No. 2 BG girls hammer No. 11 Eagles 63-22

BRITT—Second-ranked Bishop Garrigan left no doubt who is the best team in the Top of Iowa Conference this winter as the Golden Bears pounded No. 11 ranked (Class 2A) West Hancock by the score of 63-22 on Friday, Feb. 4.

The Eagles had played an almost perfect game on Jan. 7 at Bishop Garrigan as the black-and-gold won 53-52 with West Hancock draining nine of 17 three-pointers to stay in that contest.

Golden Bears clinch conference title

FOREST CITY—Bishop Garrigan clinched the Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball crown on Tuesday, Feb. 1 with a 76-51 victory over the Forest City Indians.

The battle featured a pair of top 10 ranked squads as the second-ranked Golden Bears trailed the ninth-rated Indians 16-13 at the conclusion of the first period.

AHS girls improve to 8-4 in NCC

CLARION—Algona won their fifth straight North Central Conference girls’ basketball contest on Tuesday, Feb. 1 with a hard-fought 51-46 victory over the Clarion-Goldfield/Dows Cowgirls.

The home team got off to a fast start and led 11-4 at the conclusion of the first period. The Cowgirls led 22-18 at intermission before a strong third frame saw the visitors lead 33-30 at the end of the third quarter.

Cowboys steal NCC win from Algona

CLARION—Algona led the whole game on Tuesday, Feb. 1 but Clarion-Goldfield/Dows turned a steal with three seconds remaining into a traditional three-point play to steal a 43-40 North Central Conference boys’ basketball win over the Bulldogs.

The visitors started fast by taking a 12-4 lead at the end of the first stanza. Algona took a 20-13 advantage into the locker room at intermission and also led 31-28 after three quarters of action.

BGHS boys top Indians 51-46

FOREST CITY—Grant Haugland scored a basket with 20 seconds left to break at 46-46 deadlock and give the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears a 51-46 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball win on Tuesday, Feb. 1 over the Forest City Indians.

The visitors trailed 40-34 heading into the final quarter and were behind 43-36 with 3:10 remaining in the contest before finishing the game on a 15-3 run to rally for the victory.

Late run dooms Golden Bears boys

BRITT—West Hancock finished the game with a 13-3 run to earn a 62-49 Top of Iowa Conference boys’ basketball victory on Friday, Feb. 4 over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.

The home team held a narrow 12-11 lead at the end of the first period and took a 27-25 advantage to the locker room at halftime. The Eagles also led 42-38 after three quarters of basketball.

North Union boys earn eighth win of the year

ARMSTRONG—The North Union earned their eighth victory overall and sixth in Top of Iowa Conference action on Tuesday, Feb. 1 with a 58-34 win over the Eagle Grove Eagles.

Aiden Lofstrom recorded a double-double to lead the way with 24 points and 11 rebounds while teammate Kyan Jones contributed eight caroms and handed out seven assists in the contest.

Wolverines edge Cougars 46-41

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard outscored Manson Northwest Webster 18-8 in the final eight minutes to rally for a 46-41 Twin Lakes Conference boys’ basketball victory on Tuesday, Feb. 1.

Sam Fehr had big night to lead the Wolverines with 17 points and 11 rebounds while teammate Max Fehr added 10 points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out five assists.

WB-M girls earn tight league win

WEST BEND—A strong third quarter proved to be the difference as the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ basketball squad earned a hard-fought 51-48 Twin Lakes Conference win on Tuesday, Feb. 1 over the Manson Northwest Webster Cougars.

Kierstin Montag led the way for the purple-and-gold with 20 points, ripped down 12 rebounds and blocked three shots as Hailey Stalzer chipped in with 13 points, had five rebounds, passed out six assists and registered three steals.

Warriors earn win number 14

EAGLE GROVE—The North Union Warrior girls’ basketball squad earned their 14th victory of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 1 with a 56-15 Top of Iowa Conference win over the Eagle Grove Eagles.

Naomi Jones was the lone Warrior in double figures with 18 points to go along with five steals while teammate Sam Nielsen chipped in with nine points and hauled down nine rebounds.

AHS wrestlers beat WH, B-K to earn 20th win of the season; win pair of non-conference matches

BELMOND—The Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad picked up dual meet victory number 20 Tuesday, Jan. 25, with a pair of non-conference wins.

The Bulldogs topped West Hancock 54-24 and Belmond-Klemme by the score of 60-18 before falling to Humboldt by the score of 43-19. The red-and-black are now 20-4 this winter in dual meets.

Four Algona wrestlers were a perfect 3-0 on the evening in Isaac Wilson (113), Tate Slagle (120), Hayden Thompson (132) and Brandon Harris (160).

Crooks erupts for school record 44 points in victory

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan junior post player Audi Crooks holds many of the school’s girls basketball records and she rewrote her name in another one on Friday, Jan. 28, against the North Union Warriors.

Crooks poured a new individual school record of 44 points in a 68-51 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Warriors that broke the old record of 42 points by Ashley Arndorfer.

Hot-shooting Golden Bears defeat North Union boys

ALGONA—A hot-shooting Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys basketball team defeated the North Union Warriors on Friday, Jan. 28, by the score of 74-59 in a Top of Iowa Conference contest.

The black-and-gold was successful on 26 of 45 overall field goals in the game for 57.7 percent, including eight of 17 behind the three-point line to earn their fifth victory of the season.

Bulldogs top Humboldt, Webster City, IF-A

ALGONA—Algona avenged a loss earlier in the season with a 48-38 North Central Conference win over the Humboldt Wildcats on Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Three Bulldogs reached double figures in the conference victory in Lauren McLaughlin leading the way with 16 points followed by Casey VanOtterloo with 12 points and Tora Solbach tossed in 10 points.
