Golden Bear boys top Lake Mills for 13th win

ALGONA—A big third quarter proved to be the difference as the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys basketball team earned a hard-fought 60-51 Top of Iowa Conference win over the Lake Mills Bulldogs.

Lake Mills led 16-11 at the conclusion of the opening frame as the home team took a narrow 24-23 one-point advantage to the locker room at intermission.

AHS boys wrestlers improve to 12-0 on the year

ALGONA—Remaining perfect on the year in dual meets, the second-ranked Algona Bulldog boys wrestling team earned a pair of non-conference wins on Tuesday, Jan. 21 on their home mat.

The red-and-black blanked the Rockford Warriors 85-0 and toppled the Lake Mills Bulldogs by the final score of 49-15 to improve to 12-0 overall for the season.

Titans topple WB-M 79-40 in conference play

WEST BEND—West Bend-Mallard played well in the opening eight minutes, but it was all Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire after that as the Titans handed the home team a 79-40 Twin Lakes Conference boys basketball loss on Friday, Jan. 24.

Warriors fall to No. 4 Forest City 66-32

FOREST CITY—Fourth-ranked Forest City got off to a fast start and never looked back in a 66-32 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball victory on Tuesday, Jan. 21 over the North Union Warriors.

The red-and-white raced out to a 27-15 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased their advantage to 43-19 at intermission. The Indians also took a commanding 59-24 lead in the fourth quarter.

Bishop Garrigan improves to 10-1 in conference play

EAGLE GROVE—Bishop Garrigan remained tied with Forest City for first place in the Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball standings with a 10-1 league record after a 57-36 road victory on Friday, Jan. 24 over the Eagle Grove Eagles.

Amaury Thomas poured in a game-high 18 points to lead the purple-and-gold in scoring while teammates Carter Schwab added 13 and Michael Joyce scored 11 points also reaching double digits.

AHS boys squeeze out NCC road victory

ALGONA—Heading on the road for a North Central Conference contest, the Algona Bulldog boys basketball team came home with a narrow 55-54 league victory on Friday, Jan. 24 over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets.

The Bulldogs led 20-11 at the conclusion of the opening frame and took a 31-20 advantage to the locker room at halftime. The visitors also led 47-38 heading into the fourth period of action.

Warriors cruise past Vikings

ARMSTRONG—North Union blanked Northwood-Kensett in the opening eight minutes and never looked back in handing the Viking girls a 56-14 non-conference loss on Thursday, Jan. 23.

The green-black-and-silver raced out to a 27-0 lead at the end of the first period and increased their advantage to 41-7 at intermission. The home team also took a commanding 49-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter of action.

BG girls earn non-conference road win at Humboldt 69-42

HUMBOLDT—Fourth-ranked Bishop Garrigan stepped outside of conference play on Thursday, Jan. 23 on the road and came home with a nice 69-42 girls basketball non-conference victory over the Humboldt Wildcats.

The visitors started slow, leading by only four points 10-6 at the conclusion of the opening frame. The black-and-gold increased their advantage to 34-12 at intermission and led 50-32 heading into the fourth and final quarter of action.

AHS girls still perfect in NCC play at 8-0

IOWA FALLS—Algona remained undefeated in North Central Conference girls basketball play on Friday, Jan. 24 with a hard-fought 51-46 road victory over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets.

The red-and-black improved to 13-3 overall on the year and stayed perfect in the league at 8-0. The visitors led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter, 27-25 at intermission and led 42-37 heading into the final eight minutes of the game.

North Union girls rally for conference win

ARMSTRONG—The North Union Warrior girls basketball squad trailed the entire first half but rallied in the second half limiting West Hancock to just one field goal in the final 16 minutes for a 48-35 Top of Iowa Conference victory.

Coach Schwab earns career win No. 300

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan head coach Brandon Schwab reached a milestone on Tuesday, Jan. 21 as the veteran Golden Bear head mentor picked up career win No. 300 in a 47-37 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Lake Mills Bulldogs.

Both teams struggled shooting the basketball, but for the most part, that was caused by good defense by their opponents. The black-and-gold committed 14 turnovers in the win while Lake Mills had 10.

Forest City runs past North Union boys 68-32

FOREST CITY—Forest City remained tied with Bishop Garrigan for first place in the Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball standings after a 68-32 triumph over the North Union Warriors on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

The home team broke an 8-8 tie in the opening frame with a 12-0 run to end the frame with a 20-8 lead at the end of the first period. The Indians increased their advantage to 42-18 at halftime and led 57-26 after three quarters of basketball.

WB-M girls notch 11th win of season

WEST BEND—A big third quarter led the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls basketball squad to their 11th victory of the season with a 52-32 Twin Lakes Conference triumph over East Sac County on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

The purple-and-gold led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and 21-20 at halftime. The visitors put the contest away in the third period, outscoring the Raiders 21-6 in the frame to take a 42-26 advantage into the final eight minutes of the game.

Algona girls wrestlers take sixth at Mason City

MASON CITY—The Algona Bulldog girls wrestling squad finished in fifth place with a team total of 119.5 points in a 22-team tournament at the Upper Iowa Invitational held on Saturday, Jan. 25.

Malyn Davis was the top place winner for the red-and-black with a pair of falls during the day to take second while teammate Regan Jensen took fourth at 155 pounds.

No. 7 Northwood-Kensett remains perfect with 61-51 win over North Union

ARMSTRONG—Seventh-ranked Northwood-Kensett (14-0) remained undefeated on the year on Thursday, Jan. 23 with a 61-51 non-conference boys basketball win over the North Union Warriors.

The Vikings jumped out to a 16-8 lead at the end of the first period and increased their advantage to 34-19 at intermission and also led 49-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

Late triple dooms WB-M girls 42-41

WEST BEND—Kamryn Hough drained a left wing three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining to give Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire a thrilling 42-41 Twin Lakes Conference girls basketball victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines on Friday, Jan. 24.

The visitors started fast racing out to an early 11-2 lead and led 18-11 at the conclusion of the opening frame. The Titans led 28-24 at halftime and the contest was dead-locked at 31-31 at the conclusion of the third period.
