Warriors roll past North Iowa 15-5

BANCROFT—North Union plated nine runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to roll to a 15-5, five-inning Top of Iowa Conference baseball victory over the North Iowa Bison on Wednesday, May 22.

The green-black-and-silver scored three runs in the first inning, plated two more in the second stanza and one in the third before ending the game with nine in the fifth. North Iowa scored single runs in the first and third frames and tallied three runs in the fourth in the loss.

Wolverines win first game of season

GILMORE CITY—West Bend-Mallard scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn their first victory of the season on Wednesday, May 22 with a 12-9 win over the South Central Calhoun Titans.

The purple-and-gold scored four runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third and five in the sixth for the win as the Titans scored single runs in the first and sixth frames and three runs in the second stanza in the loss.

Forest City defeats North Union 14-1

FOREST CITY—North Union managed just one hit in a 14-1, five-inning Top of Iowa Conference baseball loss on Friday, May 24 to the Forest City Indians.

The home team scored once in the first inning, added three more in the second stanza and put the contest away with 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Bulldogs drop NCC opener 4-3

WEBSTER CITY—Algona opened the North Central Conference softball schedule with a tough 4-3 decision to the Webster City Lynx on Friday, May 24.

The Bulldogs scored three times in the top of the fourth inning on a three-run home run off the bat of Paige Vileta to take a 3-0 advantage.

The home team scored twice in the bottom of the fifth stanza and won the league contest with two more tallies in the sixth frame.

Ulrich leads North Union past E-Hawks 12-0

SWEA CITY—Freshman Ainsley Ulrich hit and pitched her North Union Warrior softball squad past the Emmetsburg E-Hawks on Thursday, May 23 in a non-conference contest.

Ulrich had two hits, including a home run while tossing a three-inning no-hitter in the chalked circle with four strikeouts and no walks.

Ulrich pitches AHS past No. 4 Newman 2-1

MASON CITY—Junior pitcher Aiden Ulrich tossed seven strong innings to lead the Algona Bulldog baseball team to a narrow 2-1 non-conference victory over fourth-ranked Mason City Newman in a contest played on Thursday, May 23.

Ulrich earned the win with the complete game performance as he allowed one earned run on just four hits while fanning six batters and issued just one base-on-balls.

Golden Bears go 1-1 at Columbus Catholic tourney

WATERLOO—The Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears split a pair of games on Saturday, May 25 at the Columbus Catholic baseball tournament.

The black-and-gold defeated the host school by the score of 11-7 in the opener but lost the second game to Iowa City Regina by the score of 8-4.

In the opener, the Golden Bears jumped out to an early 9-4 advantage at the end of the third inning and went onto the victory as Tate Foertsch led the way with three hits, including a double.

Bulldogs blast three home runs in 9-5 win over E-Hawks

EMMETSBURG—Algona blasted three home runs in a 9-5 non-conference baseball victory over the Emmetsburg E-Hawks on Wednesday, May 22.

Aiden Ulrich, Tate Slagle and Logan Lentz all went deep for the red-and-black as each of them also had a single in the game.

The Bulldogs scored once in the first, two more in the second; four in the third frame and two in the fourth for a 9-0 advantage.

Warrior girls win season opener over Lady Bison 8-2

SWEA CITY—The North Union Warrior softball squad opened the 2024 season and Top of Iowa Conference schedule on Wednesday, May 22 with an 8-2 victory over the North Iowa Bison.

The green-black-and-silver plated single runs in the second and sixth innings, scored four times in the third and two more in the fourth frame while the Lady Bison scored their only two tallies in the top of the second stanza.

WB-M softball team cruises in season opener

WEST BEND—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines junior varsity softball team scored early and often in a 25-10 season opening victory on Wednesday, May 22 over the South Central Calhoun junior varsity squad.

Leah Hoffman led the offense with a double and two triples as both Lily Hoover and Morgan Myer added a pair of singles. Rounding out the 10-hit attack with one single each was Kasey Douglas, Olivia Van Helst and Avery Weydert.

Bishop Garrigan drops 4-1 contest to E-LC Midgets

ESTHERVILLE—Bishop Garrigan went on the road for a non-conference baseball contest on Wednesday, May 22 as the black-and-gold dropped a 4-1 game to the Estherville-Lincoln Central Midgets.

The 10th-ranked Midgets scored twice in the first stanza and added insurance runs in the second and fourth frames while the only run by the Golden Bears came in the top of the second inning.

Cowboys outlast WB-Mallard 13-11

GILMORE CITY—Clarion-Goldfield/Dows outlasted West Bend-Mallard 13-11 in a wild non-conference baseball game on Thursday, May 23 that saw 12 errors committed, 15 walked batters and 11 hit batsmen.

The winning Cowboys had just four hits but took advantage of seven purple-and-gold errors, drew eight base-on-balls and were hit-by-a-pitch five times.

Forest City upsets Warriors 12-7

FOREST CITY—Forest City pulled off the first upset of the 2024 Top of Iowa Conference softball season as the red-and-white broke a 7-7 deadlock to earn a 12-7 upset win on Friday, May 24 over defending champion North Union.

The home team jumped out to an early 7-0 advantage after three innings of play but the green-black-and-silver fought back to tie the game at 7-7.

Opening night attracts 61 cars at speedway

ALGONA—After opening night was rained out last week, the 2024 season got started at the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday, May 16.

The season opened with the biggest field of two-person cruisers in the past five years and had a pair of heat races for the first time in that period.

Golden Bear girls medal in three different events

DES MOINES—Earning medals in three different events, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls track squad placed 39th overall with six points at the Class 1A state track meet last week at Drake Stadium.

The black-and-gold finished in third place in the 400-meter dash, the 100-meter hurdles and the sprint medley relay.
