Algona wins key NCC road contest 54-42

HUMBOLDT—A big third quarter got the Algona Bulldog girls basketball team the lead after trailing the entire first half, and they went onto a hard-fought 54-42 North Central Conference victory on Friday, Jan. 17 over the Humboldt Wildcats.

Humboldt raced out to a 13-2 lead at the end of the first period, held a 13-7 advantage after the first quarter of play and led 25-23 at intermission.

Career-high by Thomas leads BG past Newman

ALGONA—Junior Amaury Thomas poured in a career-high 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys basketball team to a 66-58 non-conference win over the Mason City Newman Knights on Thursday, Jan. 16.

AHS girls wrestlers move to 12-0 in dual meets

HAMPTON—The Algona Bulldog girls wrestling squad remained undefeated on the year in dual meets on Monday, Jan. 20 with three more wins in a quadrangular meet held in Hampton.

The red-and-black moved to 12-0 on the season by defeating Nevada 66-18, toppling Hampton-Dumont by the final score of 64-12 and beating Perry by the count of 60-17.

Algona boys claim NCC dual meet wrestling title

CLEAR LAKE—The Algona Bulldog boys wrestling team completed a perfect run through the North Central Conference on Thursday, Jan. 16 to capture the league dual meet crown with a perfect 7-0 mark.

The red-and-black defeated the Clear Lake Lions by the final score of 61-16 before toppling the Hampton-Dumont Bulldogs by the count of 51-19.

Fifth straight win for NU girls

GRAETTINGER—For the fifth consecutive game, the North Union Warrior girls basketball squad added to the win column with latest victory coming on Tuesday, Jan. 14 with a 55-37 non-conference triumph over the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans.

The contest was dead-locked at 14-14 after a well-played opening frame before the visitors pulled out to a 31-22 advantage at intermission. The green-black-and-silver also led 42-37 heading into the fourth quarter.

Big third quarter propels Bishop Garrigan past Bronco girls

ALGONA—A big third quarter broke open a five-point contest at intermission as the fourth-ranked Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls basketball squad defeated the Belmond-Klemme Broncos by the final score of 68-46 in a Top of Iowa Conference game.

The black-and-gold led by one point at 13-12 at the end of the first period and led 29-24 at halftime. The home team out-scored the Broncos 24-9 in the third frame and took a 53-33 advantage into the final eight minutes of action.

North Union wrestlers take second at AGWSR tourney

ACKLEY—With their best performance of the season, the North Union Warrior wrestling squad were the runner-ups in the eight-team Cougar Invitational held on Saturday, Jan. 18.

The green-black-and-silver amassed a total of 137 team points during the day of wrestling and were topped only by the first place Southeast Warrens’ total of 163.5 points.

Warriors split league match at Newman

MASON CITY—The North Union Warrior wrestling squad split a Top of Iowa Conference wrestling triangular meet held on Thursday, Jan. 16.

The green-black-and-silver defeated the West Fork Warhawks by the final score of 48-15, but fell to the Mason City Newman Knights by the count of 42-36.

Mason Knapp improves to 23-2 for WB-M wrestlers

SIOUX RAPIDS—West Bend-Mallard dropped three matches in a wrestling quadrangular meet held on Thursday, Jan. 16 against a pair of Twin Lakes Conference foes along with a non-conference match.

The purple-and-gold lost a 48-18 non-conference match to Marcus Meriden Cleghorn Remsen Union before dropping league matches to Sioux Central by the final score of 77-6 and Southeast Valley 47-15.

Mustangs gallop past WB-Mallard 70-35

NEWELL—Newell-Fonda handed the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys basketball team a 70-35 Twin Lakes Conference loss on Friday, Jan. 17.

The Mustangs raced out to a 23-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased their advantage to 43-10 at halftime. The blue and white also led 53-21 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

No. 2 Lions cruise past Algona 82-43

ALGONA—After a tight first quarter, second-ranked Clear Lake pulled away the final three periods and cruised to an 82-43 North Central Conference boys basketball victory on Monday, Jan. 20 over the Algona Bulldogs.

The red-and-black trailed by just three points at 17-14 after the first eight minutes of play, the Lions outscored the home team 28-7 in the second frame to take a 45-21 advantage to the locker room at halftime and led 67-32 moving forward into the fourth quarter.

Titan boys topple North Union 55-48

GRAETTINGER—North Union dropped a non-conference boys basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 14 to the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans by the final score of  55-48.

The home team led 14-11 at the conclusion of the first period and held a narrow 25-23 advantage at intermission. The Titans led 42-36 heading into the fourth quarter of action.

Spencer prevails in sloppy non-conference win over AHS

ALGONA—Spencer toppled the Algona Bulldog boys basketball team 56-38 in a sloppy, turnover-filled, non-conference contest that took place on Saturday, Jan. 18.

The Tigers forced the red-and-black into 27 turnovers during the contest while the purple-and-gold committed 18 turnovers of their own in the victory.

Nathan Manske was the only player in double digits for the Bulldogs with 12 points as he recorded a double-double by yanking down a game-high 12 rebounds.

WB-M wrestlers compete in Twin Lakes Conference meet

GOWRIE—Four West Bend-Mallard Wolverine wrestlers competed in the annual Twin Lakes Conference meet held this year on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Southeast Valley High School.

The purple-and-gold finished in 10th place in the final team standings with 17 points as Alta-Aurelia won the conference championship with a team total of 211 points.

Algona boys wrestlers win Forest City Invitational

FOREST CITY—Crowning five champions during the day, the Algona Bulldog boys wrestling team won the team title at the Forest City Invitational held on Saturday, Jan. 11.

The red-and-black amassed a total of 244.5 points during the day, 12.5 more points than runner-up North Fayette Valley, and Clear Lake took third place in the 10-team tournament with 155 points.

Bishop Garrigan shoots past Wolverine boys 93-45

WEST BEND—Bishop Garrigan reached a new season high in points scored in a 93-45 non-conference boys basketball victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines on Monday, Jan. 13.

The black-and-gold buried 13 three-pointers to improve to 10-2 overall on the year and are 7-1 in Top of Iowa Conference games while West Bend-Mallard fell to 2-10 overall and are 2-2 in Twin Lakes Conference contests.
