Bulldogs 3-0 in NCC play

Algona scored early and often by rapping out 14 hits in a 16-6, six-inning baseball victory over the St. Edmond Gaels in a North Central Conference game played in Algona on Monday, June 5.
The red-and-black improved to 5-5 overall but are 3-0 in the conference while the Gaels fell to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the league with the loss on Monday evening.

Capesius places 14th at State

Bishop Garrigan sophomore Isabella Capesius finished in 14th place overall at the Class 1A girls’ state golf tournament played at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown on Tuesday, May 30 and Wednesday, May 31.
On Tuesday, Capesius recorded pars on Holes No. 10, 12, 14 and 15 along with nine bogeys during her rounds of 50-41—91, which left her in tie for ninth place after day one.

BGHS, Oleson finish as state runner-ups

The Bishop Garrigan boys’ team and Parker Oleson of North Union ended up in as the Class 1A state runner-ups at the state golf meet played at the American Legion Golf Course in Des Moines on May 26-27.
The Golden Bears shot a 318 on Friday and came back with a 314 on Saturday for a two-day team total of 632 that was topped only by Winthrop East Buchanan’s score of 614 as North Union placed sixth with a team score of 346-329—675.

Bauer sets new state record in 1,600

Riley Bauer of North Union concluded a great weekend of events at the Class 1A state track meet in Des Moines by breaking a state record in the 1,600-meter run as the junior repeated as the state champion with his winning time of 4:18.73, breaking a record set by Paul Barnhardt of LeMars Gehlen way back in 1986 in a time of 4:20.35.

Warrior girls qualify three events

NORTHWOOD—North Union qualified four young ladies in three different events for the Class 1A state track meet that will take place this weekend in Des Moines.
The green-black-and-silver qualified for the state meet from the regional meet that saw the squad score 47 points to finish in a tie for eighth place in the 14-team meet with Mason City Newman.

Two WB-M relays headed to state

A pair of relays qualified for the Class 1A state track meet to highlight the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls’ track squad at the regional meet held in Manson on Thursday, May 11.

Golden Bear boys’ send nine events to state

Bishop Garrigan will send 11 athletes in nine different events to the state track meet in Des Moines this weekend as the squad finished as the runner-up with 119 total points in the Class 1A district meet held in Manson on Thursday, May 11.
Five black-and-gold events earned the automatic qualifying spots by placing first, including a pair of field events in Drake Buscherfeld with a career-best toss of 46’ 7¾” and Andrew Meister in the discus with a best throw of 129’ 8”.

Golden Bear girls win conference title

For the first time in the school’s history, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ track team captured a conference crown.  The black-and-gold took first place at the Top of Iowa Conference meet in Buffalo Center on Thursday, May 4.
The black-and-gold totaled 119.5 points in the meet to top the nine-team field as West Hancock was the runner-up squad with 109 points and Forest City took third with 102.5.

Humboldt ends Bulldog girls’ NCC run

Humboldt ended the Algona Bulldog girls’ track squad’s reign as the North Central Conference champions in the conference meet held in Iowa Falls on Thursday, May 4.
The purple-and-gold scored 181.3 points to top the Bulldogs’ total of 158.3.  The red-and-black had won the conference the past seven years while it was the Wildcats first league crown in 28 years.

Riley Bauer places fifth at Drake Relays

A trio of area high school events competed in the 108th annual Drake Relays held inside the Drake Stadium in Des Moines on the beautiful blue oval on Thursday, April 27-29.
The top performance came from defending Class 1A state champion Riley Bauer of North Union in the 1,600-meter, where the Warrior junior finished in fifth place with his clocking of 4:22.70 in that race on Saturday afternoon.

Bulldogs runner-up at Hackbarth Relays

Denver won the final event of the night to sneak past the Algona Bulldogs to win the annual Hackbarth Relays held in Algona on Tuesday, May 2.
Denver totaled 109 to win the meet as the red-and-black won five events and scored 104 team points to finish as the runner-ups.  Bishop Garrigan also competed in the nine-team field and placed sixth with 47 points.

Helmers, AHS finish second

Jackson Helmers was the individual runner-up medalist as the Algona Bulldog boys’ golf team finished in second place at the Algona Invitational Golf Tournament played at the Algona Country Club on Saturday, April 22.

Krieps earns medalist honor

Avenging a loss from earlier in the season, the Algona Bulldog girls’ golf team defeated Estherville-Lincoln Central 213-229 in a non-conference match played at Estherville on Monday, April 24.
Megan Krieps of Algona had the low round of the day to win the medalist honor with her nine-hole total of 47, six strokes ahead of Molly Diekmann of E-LC, who was the runner-up medalist with a 53.

Golden Bears place first at Poky Relays

Bishop Garrigan won 11 events and placed first with 195 points in Class C to take the team title at the Pocahontas Area Relays held in Pocahontas on Friday, April 21.
Joel Vaske was one of the stars for the black-and-gold by earning four gold medals, including a pair of individual winners as the senior took the 400-meter dash in 53.27 and the won the 400-meter hurdles with his clocking of 58.81.

BGHS girls win triangular

On a warm, windy April day, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls’ golf squad took a Top of Iowa Conference triangular meet played at the Country Greens Golf Course in Armstrong on Tuesday, April 18.
The black-and-gold had all five players shoot rounds in the fifties for a team score of 210 as North Iowa had two golfers and North Iowa had just one.

Oleson fires two-under par 34

Parker Oleson of North Union was the medalist but the depth of the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys’ golf team was the difference as the black-and-gold took a Top of Iowa Conference match played on Tuesday, April 18 in Armstrong at the Country Greens Golf Course.
The Golden Bears fired a team total of 158 to top North Union’s team score of 178 and North Iowa rounded out the three-team match with a team score of 212.
