Algona blanks Golden Bears

ALGONA—The annual cross-town baseball game in 2020 was dominated by the Algona Bulldogs as the red-and-black defeated the Golden Bears by the score of 11-0 in five innings on Tuesday, July 7. Cameren Rindone flipped a one-hit shutout. The junior right-hander gave up only a leadoff infield single by Marcus Plathe in the top of the fourth inning. Plathe was later erased on an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.
 

Etherington fans 12 in cross-town rivalry win

    ALGONA—Senior all-state pitcher Kameryn Etherington fanned a dozen batters and her Algona teammates pounded out 14 hits in a 9-2 victory in a cross-town battle played on Tuesday, July 7, at Bishop Garrigan.
The Bulldog senior allowed just four hits to the sixth-ranked Golden Bears (Class 1A) while issuing a pair of bases on balls while in the chalked circle.

Cardinals edge North Union 3-1

BANCROFT—For the second time this week, the North Union Warriors baseball team was on the short end of a close contest against one of the top squads in the Top of the Iowa Conference as they fell on Friday, July 3, to the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals by the score of 3-1.

Wolverines drop non-conference tilt

POCAHONTAS—West Bend-Mallard plated five runs in the top of the first inning but the Pocahontas Indians answered with the final nine runs of the game to earn a 9-5 non-conference baseball win over the purple-and-gold on Tuesday, June 30.
Hunter Buhs led the Wolverine offense with a double that knocked in a pair of RBI while teammates Cole Thilges, Nolan Blair and Kody Elbert each added a single. Sam Fehr, Nolan Ford, Elbert, Blair and Thilges all scored once in the loss.
 

Warriors defeat St. Edmond 7-4

SWEA CITY—Cassie Beadle and Vanessa Von Bank each had three hits to lead 14th-ranked North Union to a 7-4 non-conference softball victory on Thursday, July 2, over the St. Edmond Gaels.
Vanessa Von Bank had two singles and a double while teammates Beadle added three singles and Olivia Von Bank contributed a single and a double.

Larson, Shryock earn Midwest Madness Tour wins

ALGONA—A veteran driver with a ton of feature wins and teenager with the biggest win of his life highlighted night number five of the Midwest Madness Tour held on Wednesday, July 1 at the Kossuth County Speedway.
Seasoned veteran Kelly Shryock won the $1,000 first place money in the stock car division while 16-year-old Jayden Larson of Mankato, Minn., won the $1,000 modified feature, holding off Travis Hatcher, Jeremy Mills and Shryock for the biggest victory of his young career.

Etherington fans 17 in 2-1 win

ALGONA—Senior all-state pitcher Kameryn Etherington was sharp in the chalked circle, and the sixth-ranked Algona Bulldogs needed everything she had to a hard-fought, 2-1 North Central Conference softball victory on Monday, June 29, over the Clear Lake Lions.

Algona wins NCC opener at Ft. Dodge

Boumeester wins Wyffels special

ALGONA—Jared Boumeester of Waseca, Minn., led the final 19 laps to collect $1,000 by taking first place in the Wyffels Hybrids Sport Mods Special at the Kossuth County Speedway in the featured event of the evening on Thursday, June 25.

Etherington, Algona shut down Webster City on 1-hitter in 9-0 win

ALGONA—Kameryn Etherington allowed just one hit and added four hits at the plate, including a two-run home run, to power ninth-ranked Algona (Class 3A) to a 9-0 nonconference win over the Webster City Lynx, rated No. 15 in Class 4A Friday, June 19.
The Bulldog senior right-hander gave up just a two-out single in the fourth inning while blanking the Lynx for the second time this week. She fanned 10 batters and did not issue a walk.

Golden Bears earn two wins Saturday

MASON CITY—Fifth-ranked Bishop Garrigan picked up a pair of victories on Saturday, June 20, at the Mason City Newman Tournament. The black-and-gold toppled Hudson 13-5 in the opener and defeated Madrid by the score of 7-1 in its second contest of the day.
In the opener, Aubree Altman earned the win in the chalked circle by tossing six strong frames. She allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits without a strikeout and issued one base on balls.

West Bend-Mallard can’t hold late lead, falls

WEST BEND—Trailing 7-6 in the top of the sixth inning, G-T/R-A plated three runs and added two big insurance runs in the top of the seventh frame to earn an 11-8 victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines Wednesday, June 17.
Anna Ackerman led the Wolverines at the plate with a single and a home run, and Kayla Hoskins laced a double.
