Golden Bears drop season opener to Iowa City West

CEDAR RAPIDS—Bishop Garrigan gave the eighth-ranked team in Class 5A all they could handle but Iowa City West finished the game with a 9-0 run to earn a 60-50 season opening win over the black-and-gold.

The Golden Bears, ranked second in Class 1A, trailed by just one point at 51-50 with 3:10 to play but did not score again in the contest.

Four Bulldogs on all-state teams by Iowa Sports Print Writers

DES MOINES—Four Algona Bulldog football players were named to one of the three all-state teams on Sunday in a vote by the Iowa Sports Print Writers Association.

Senior Trevon Smith along with classmate Tyler Manske and freshman Alex Manske were all chosen to the second-team while teammate senior Jaxon Woodyard was a third-team choice.

Prochniak, Fries named third-team all-state

DES MOINES—North Union junior Bryer Prochniak and teammate senior Aiden Fries were chosen to the Class A third-team all-state by a vote of the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association on Sunday.

KOSSUTH COUNTY—Tyler Manske of Algona is the lone three-time selection to the 17th annual Kossuth County Advance All-Area football team while eight other players are repeaters from last year. Three other players were first teamers in 2020 and were named on a special mention due to injury unit.

Algona Swim Team's Season Ends at Regional

FORT DODGE—The Algona swim team concluded its 2021 season at the regional swim held at Fort Dodge High School. The red-and-black did not score any points competing eight bigger schools.

The top finish for the Bulldogs came in the 50-yard freestyle race where Quimby Ross ended up in 18th place overall with her time of 29.33.

All-Conference Volleyball Teams announced for NCC, Twin Lakes and Top of Iowa; Longhenry is TIC POY

ARMSTRONG—North Union senior outside hitter Anna Longhenry was named the player of the year in the Top of Iowa Conference while two of her Warrior teammates were chosen to the second-team all-conference squad and another was honored on the honorable mention list.

Underclassmen Dominate 17th annual Advance All-Area Volleyball Team

ALGONA—A talented group of 11 underclassmen dominate the 2021 edition of the Kossuth County Advance’s 17th Annual All-Area Volleyball Team.

This season’s first team features six juniors and a pair of sophomores with two more juniors and one sophomore on this fall’s second unit.

Algona swimmers drop season finale

CARROLL—The Algona swim team ended the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 26, as the squad drop a pair of matches. The red-and-black fell to Perry by the score of 76-54 and lost to the Carroll Tigers by the score of 108-45.
The lone winner for the Bulldogs against the Perry Bluejays was Cathryn Houge in the 200-yard IM event with her clocking of 2:03.00.

Freshman Welbig just misses all-state

FORT DODGE—All year long North Union freshman Jacey Welbig has been having a great season and she capped the 2021 campaign with another fine showing on Saturday, Oct. 30 at the Class 1A state cross-country meet. Read about how she did in the Nov. 4 Advance. 

Swift, Schiltz run in 1A state meet

FORT DODGE—A pair of area boys cross-country competitors competed at the Class 1A state meet on Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Lakeside Golf Course inside Kennedy Park as both runners finished in the top 100 of the 156 runners competing in the race - Quinn Swift of Bishop Garrigan and Nick Schiltz of North Union. Stundahl top 35 at state

FORT DODGE—Algona junior Ryan Stundahl had a nice showing in his first time running at the state meet as he turned a top 35 showing of the 135 runners competing in the event.

Knapp earns medal state meet

FORT DODGE—Last year as a sophomore, Algona’s Moriah Knapp finished in 51st place at the Class 3A state cross-country meet with her time of 20:32.7.
But the Bulldog junior showed how she has improved in the last 365 days as she earned medal on Friday, Oct. 29, at the Lakeside Golf Course just north of Fort Dodge.

Bulldogs fall in first round of playoffs

SERGEANT BLUFF—Sergeant Bluff-Luton came into the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs on Friday, Oct. 29, with just a pair of losses to top-ranked Harlan and No. 2 Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley.
The No. 8 ranked Warriors came in razor sharp in the first 24 minutes by building a 30-0 advantage at intermission and went onto a 44-14 victory over the Algona Bulldogs to get a rematch with second-ranked Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley for trip to UNI-Dome.
 

No. 4 Wildcats top Algona; Bulldogs playoffs bound

HUMBOLDT—Algona played well on Friday, Oct. 22, in its final regular season game of the year, but fourth-ranked Humboldt made a couple of big plays to hand the red-and-black a 35-26 defeat in a hard-hitting Class 3A district football contest.
The Bulldogs led 14-7 halfway through the second period before the undefeated Wildcats scored 21 unanswered points and completed a perfect regular season with a district title.
