BGHS tops WB-M in regional VB opener

In a Class 1A regional volleyball opener on Tuesday, Oct. 22, Bishop Garrigan defeated a pesky West Bend-Mallard squad in three straight sets.
The home team jumped to an early 4-1 lead in the opening game. West Bend-Mallard battled back and kept the set close. Leading 15-13, BGHS extended the advantage to 19-13.

Bulldogs rally past Southeast Valley in tourney opener

Senior leadership is a key component to post-season success for a team to advance at tournament time.
Senior Molly McCauley provided that leadership by hammering home a match-high 30 kills, including three early in the final set, to lead the Algona Bulldogs to an exciting five-set, Class 3A regional volleyball win over a scrappy Southeast Valley Jaguars squad on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

Warriors fall to Lake Mills

The 2019 volleyball season came to an end for the North Union Warriors as the squad dropped a Class 2A regional contest to the Lake Mills Bulldogs in three straight sets on Monday, Oct. 28.
The green, black and silver finished the season with an overall match record of 3-24 and went 17-48 in games played in those matches.

Mustangs gallop past West Bend-Mallard

Newell-Fonda scored in every quarter in a 36-16 season-ending, eight-man football victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines in a contest played on Friday, Oct. 25.
The Wolverines finished the year with an overall record of 2-8 and were 1-5 in district play, good enough for sixth place, while the Mustangs finished the season 6-3 overall and were 4-2 in the district.

Algona hosts Central Lyon in playoffs

The Algona Bulldogs football team (9-0) will host Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (5-4) in the first round of Class 2A playoffs Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.
The red and black are the the No. 3 overall seed in the playoffs while the Lions come in at No. 16. The winner of that contest will play at the highest remaining seed on Friday, Nov. 8, against the survivor of the contest between No. 8 Greene County (8-1) and No. 9 Des Moines Christian *-1).

Warhawks stop North Union's late charge

A valiant fourth-quarter rally by the North Union Warriors football squad fell just short as the green, black and silver lost to the West Fork Warhawks 13-12 in the season finale for both teams on Friday, Oct. 25.
West Fork scored on the opening possession. The visitors marched 74 yards in 13 plays to take an early 7-0 advantage. The contest remained that way until 47 seconds remained in the first half when the Warhawks scored on a 2-yard run to lead 13-0 at intermission.

No. 13 Mustangs top BGHS

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan won the opening set but No. 13th ranked Newell-Fonda fought back to take the next three close games to earn a non-conference volleyball match victory over the black-and-gold.
The Golden Bears started fast by taking the opener by the score of 25-20 before the Mustangs battled back to take the next three sets by the scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-22.

Swim team falls 88-74 to Mason City

ALGONA—Algona had the lead early before the Mason City swim team came back to defeat the red-and-black by the score of 88-74 in a meet held at the Algona Family YMCA on Thursday, Oct. 10.
“I saw a lot of good things in the pool tonight,” said Algona head coach Jim Fisher. “I thought the girls worked really hard in practice this week and it showed in their times as 14 of them shown improvement from our last week at Storm Lake.”

Algona blows past Gaels

Algona went on the road south down Highway 169 to Fort Dodge on Thursday, Oct. 3, in North Central Conference volleyball play and blew past the St. Edmond Gaels in three straight sets.
The red-and-black started fast behind the serving of Ashlin Young, jumping out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first game. The home team never challenged in the set as the Bulldogs cruised to a 25-7 victory.

Wegener scores five times in AHS rout

ALGONA—All season long, Algona senior Wyatt Wegener had been putting up video game like numbers. Friday evening against Clarion-Goldfield, the returning all-stater added another chapter to his story, leading the No. 3 ranked Bulldogs to a 41-8 Class 2A district win.

Bulldog girls take fifth place in AHS Invite

ALGONA—The Algona Bulldog girls cross-country squad had a nice fifth place finish as a team to highlight the performances of the four area schools at the Algona Invitational meet held at the River Road Golf Course on Monday, Sept. 30.

Stundahl earns top five placing

ALGONA—Algona’s Ryan Stundahl continued his successful freshman campaign with a fifth place overall finish to highlight the performances of the four area boys’ cross-country teams at the Algona Invitational.

Impressive district opener

GARNER—Algona opened the Class 2A district play with an impressive 35-7 victory over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals on Friday, Sept. 27. The red-and-black raced out to a 21-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter and dominated the rest of the contest.
The red-and-black took the opening kickoff and went down to score on a 3-yard run by quarterback Tyler Manske. Isaac Schonert kicked the conversion point try as the visitors led 7-0 with 8:46 left in the opening stanza.

Golden Bears shut down Lake Mills 22-6

Bishop Garrigan gave up a touchdown on the opening kickoff on Sept. 13 but did not allow another point the rest of the game in a 22-6 non-district football victory over the Lake Mills Bulldogs.
Bennett Eaton fielded Joe Merron's kickoff at the 12-yard line and headed down the right sideline. He broke a tackle around midfield and sprinted 88 yards for a Bulldog touchdown.

No. 3 unbeaten with win over E-Hawks

Algona overcame a sluggish first half en route to a 34-14 non-district homecoming victory over the Emmetsburg E-Hawks on Sept. 13.
The home team struggled with five penalties and a pair of big fumbles but denied scoring drives and gave the E-Hawks a short field to make things interesting at intermission.

North Union earns first victory

North Union earned its first victory of the 2019 season with a three-set win over the West Hancock Eagles on Sept. 10 in a Top of Iowa Conference volleyball match.
The green, black and silver won a very close, 26-24 opening game before defeating the Eagles by 25-6. The Warriors wrapped up their first victory with a 25-12 score in the third set.
