Earn place in AHS hall of fame

Late triple dooms NU

ARMSTRONG—Kory Hough drained a three-pointer from the top of the circle with 16 seconds remaining on Tuesday, Jan. 11, to give Graetttinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans to a narrow 60-59 non-conference win over the North Union Warriors.

The home team led 55-48 with 3:54 to play in the fourth quarter and 57-51 with 3:24 to go in the contest before the Titans put on a late rally for the victory.

AHS boys earn 2nd NCC win

ALGONA—Algona started slow by giving up the first five points of the game but dominated after that in a 66-53 North Central Conference boys basketball win on Thursday, Jan. 13, over Hampton-Dumont.

The home team led 20-14 at the end of the first period and enjoyed a 44-33 advantage at halftime as Algona led 55-43 heading into the fourth quarter of action.

Two wins in a row for BGHS

EAGLE GROVE—Bishop Garrigan survived a barrage of three-pointers by Eagle Grove in the opening frame to rally for a 62-47 Top of Iowa Conference victory over the Eagles on Thursday, Jan. 13.

The home nailed five triples in the opening eight minutes to take an early 14-2 advantage and led 20-8 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

Warriors win three league matches

SWEA CITY—The North Union Warriors wrestling squad won a trio of Top of Iowa Conference wrestling matches on Thursday, Jan. 13.

The green-black-and-silver defeated Belmond-Klemme by the score of 52-24 before beating Mason City Newman 45-35 and topped West Fork by the score of 66-9.

Going 3-0 on the evening were Ethan Preston (106), Landon Price (113), Gavyn Morphew (132), Dalton Tobin (145), Kaden Laabs (152) and Kaleb Lufkin (182).

WB-M wrestlers drop pair of matches

SIOUX RAPIDS—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad lost a pair of non-conference matches on Thursday, Jan. 13.

The purple-and-gold fell to the Southeast Valley Jaguars by the score of 56-15 and lost to the host school Rebels by the score of 36-30.

Aaron Massner (138) and Ethan Zaugg (195) both went 2-0 while teammate Logan Grimm (152) won his only match of the night.

AHS girls fall to H-D, 60-38

ALGONA—Hampton-Dumont stayed in the thick of the North Central Conference girls basketball race on Thursday, Jan. 13, with a 60-38 victory over the Algona Bulldogs.

The visiting Bulldogs improved to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the league while the home town Bulldogs fell to 4-8 overall in the year and is now 3-3 in conference contests.

Golden Bears cruise to league win over Broncos

BELMOND—Second-ranked Bishop Garrigan used a 22-0 run to put the game away and went onto a 65-37 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball win on Tuesday, Jan. 11, over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos.

The visitors led 16-6 at the end of the first frame and took a 33-21 advantage to the locker room at intermission. The black-and-gold also led 46-27 heading into the fourth quarter of action.

Golden Bears earn 2nd win

BELMOND—Bishop Garrigan snapped a long losing streak with their second victory of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 11, with a 75-38 triumph over the Belmond-Klemme Broncos.

Andrew Fogarty poured a game-high 22 points as teammate Jacob Leerar contributed 19 points and Logan Nemmers also reached double digits with 10 points.

West Hancock tops cold shooting Warriors

ARMSTRONG—West Hancock defeated a cold-shooting North Union squad boys basketball squad 48-31 on Thursday, Jan. 13, in a Top of Iowa Conference contest.

The visitors led 9-4 and 27-9 at the first two quarter breaks as the Warriors made just four of 26 shot attempts in the opening half. The Eagles also held a 40-18 advantage after three periods of action.

8th ranked Spencer Tigers top Algona, 85-60

SPENCER—Spencer, ranked eighth in Class 3A, built a 15-point first quarter advantage and never looked back on Tuesday, Jan. 11, in an 85-60 non-conference boys basketball victory over the Algona Bulldogs.

The Tigers led 27-12 at the conclusion of a high-scoring first stanza and took a 47-27 advantage to the locker room at halftime. The purple-and-gold also led 67-45 at the end of the third period.

Wegener Earns All-Big 10 Academic Honor

IOWA CITY—Former Algona High School graduate Wyatt Wegener is one of 113 University of Iowa student athletes named to the 2021 fall Academic All-Big 10 team.

Three other athletes that are familiar to the Algona area also earned honors in football players Josef Smith of West Hancock and Jamison Heinz of Humboldt with Bryce Gidel of Humboldt in women’s cross-country.

Wegener is a member of Iowa’s football team who is sophomore majoring in health and human physiology. 

Free throw winners on to district

On Sunday, Jan. 16, the local council 952 of the Knights of Columbus had their annual free throw contest for area youth held at Bishop Garrigan’s gym. It was broken out into 12 divisions for boys and girls ranging from ages 9-14. 

Montag pours in 26 as WB-M streaks by Rockets

WEST BEND—Senior Collin Montag poured in a game-high 26 points to help lead the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys basketball team to a 76-46 non-conference victory on Monday, Jan. 17, over the Paton-Churdan Rockets.

Montag nailed six of 10 attempts behind the three-point arc on the evening as the purple-and-gold sank 13 of 26 triples in their fourth win of the 2021-2022 campaign.

Second half leads AHS past Gaels

ALGONA—Algona outscored St. Edmond 37-24 in the second half to earn a 65-56 North Central Conference boys basketball victory over the Gaels on Friday, Jan. 7.

Garrett Goche poured a game-high 24 points to lead the winners as teammate Caden Weber also reached double digits with 10 points while Hayden Mayer tossed in 24 points for the visitors and Quinton McCardville added 11 more.
