NU Sports: Wrestlers go 2-2 at duals, girls and boys split with North Iowa

The North Union Warriors wrestling team had a good showing at the Saint Ansgar Duals by going 2-2 on the day on Saturday, Dec. 5. The Warriors defeated Northwood-Kensett 48-18 and Saint Ansgar 33-30 but fell to Lake Mills 66-12 and Clear Lake by the score of 64-12.
North Union raced out to a huge first quarter lead and never looked back in a 78-4 rout of the North Iowa Lady Bison on Friday, Dec. 4 in the Top of Iowa Conference girls’ basketball opener for both squads.

WB-M Sports: Wolverines wrestlers go 2-1, hoops teams get a win to start the season

The West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad opened the 2020-2021 season on Thursday, Dec. 3 at Emmetsburg and went 2-1 on the night.
A big third period was too much for the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys’ basketball team to overcome on Tuesday, Dec. 1 as the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans defeated the purple-and-gold by the score of 48-28 in the season opener for both squads.

Comets slide past Bulldogs

Algona held a two-point halfway through the fourth quarter but Charles City scored eight of the game’s final 10 points on Saturday, Dec. 5 to earn a 33-29 non-conference girls basketball win over the red-and-black.

Second ranked Golden Bears improve to 3-0

Second-ranked Bishop Garrigan overcame a slow start before rolling on Saturday, Dec. 5 to a 72-33 non-conference girls basketball victory over the Mason City Newman Knights.

The Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad was impressive in their season opener on Saturday, Dec. 5 in Dutchman Duals with five dual victories during the day. over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, Spirit Lake Park, West Lyon, MOC/Floyd Valley and West Monona/Whiting.

Algona girls fall to ELC at home

ALGONA—Algona battled tough against a solid Estherville-Lincoln Central squad on Monday, Nov. 20, but a 12-0 run to start the final quarter put the game away as the visitors went on to a 66-35 non-conference victory.

Bishop Garrigan blows past Gaels after 38-1 start

FORT DODGE—Second-ranked Bishop Garrigan was a strong as a gale force wind in a convincing, 91-15, season-opening, non-conference girls basketball win over the St. Edmond Gales on Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Late run lifts Golden Bears

    FORT DODGE—Trailing 65-61 with 1:52 to play in the game, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys basketball team scored the final nine points of the contest to earn a 70-65 season opening victory on Monday, Nov. 30, over the St. Edmond Gaels.
The visitors built leads as high as 10 points at one point early only to see the home team battle back in the third quarter to tie the game and take the lead in the final eight minutes before the visitors rallied for the win.
 

North Union fends off WB-M

North Union held off a strong fourth quarter rally by a gritty West Bend-Mallard club and earned a hard-fought, 34-33, non-conference, season-opening victory over the purple-and-gold on Tuesday, Nov. 24.
The green-black-and-silver held a comfortable 30-23 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of action before the visitors out-scored the Warriors 10-4 in the fourth quarter to make things interesting.
 

Midgets topple Algona 53-45

    ALGONA—Estherville-Lincoln Central outscored Algona 35-27 in the second half to earn a 53-45 season-opening, non-conference boys basketball victory on Monday, Nov. 30, over the Bulldogs.
The Midgets used an 11-0 run early in the third quarter to turn a 23-18 deficit into a 29-23 advantage and never trailed again in the contest. The visitors sealed the win by making eight of 12 fouls shots in the final eight minutes of play.
 

Two from area Class A all-state in football

Seniors Ryan Lang of North Union and Kellen Murphy of Bishop Garrigan were selected to the Class A third-team all-state football team on Sunday, Nov. 22 by a vote of members of the Iowa Print Sports Writers and Iowa Football Coaches Association.

Lang only three-peater on Kossuth County Advance's all-area football team

Ryan Lang of North Union was the lone three-time selection to the 16th annual Kossuth County Advance All-Area football team while nine other area players are repeaters from last season. Tyler Manske, Noah Nelson, Noah Kleier and James Wartick of Algona along with Bishop Garrigan’s Derrick Kirsch, Isaiah Plathe and Joey Trainer and Creytan Grimm and Jared Schmidt of West Bend-Mallard all returned to the squad for the second consecutive season.

16th annual Advance All-Area Volleyball Team

Seniors dominate the Kossuth County Advance’s 16th Annual All-Area Volleyball Team.
The first-team features seven seniors and there is a trio of young women returning for the second straight season to join eight newcomers to the 2020 first team. Monika and Rachel Fehr of West Bend-Mallard and North Union’s Lily Henderson are back for the second consecutive campaign. Gracie Elsbecker of Bishop Garrigan and Kayla Hoskins of West Bend-Mallard moved up from last year’s second team.

BGHS girls 8th at regionals; WBM, North Union run

The Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears girls’ cross-country squad finished in eighth place overall at the Class 1A regional meet held on Thursday, Oct. 22 at the Pioneer Town and Country Club. Algona's Knapp qualifies for state cross-country

Sophomore Moriah Knapp qualified for the Class 3A state girls’ cross-country meet with a top 15 finish on Wednesday, Oct. 21 in the regional meet held at the Spencer Municipal Golf Course to highlight the performances of the Algona Bulldogs squad.
