Hanson earns Twin Lakes title for Wolverines

Senior Donavon Hanson claimed the individual title at 113 pounds to highlight the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Twin Lakes Conference meet.
The purple-and-gold finished in ninth place in the team standings with 88 points.

No. 1 BGHS gallops past Broncos

Belmond-Klemme scored the first two points of the game but top-ranked Bishop Garrigan answered with the next 32 points and went on to an 85-24 Top of Iowa Conference girls basketball victory over the Broncos. The victory was career win number 200 for Golden Bear head coach Brandon Schwab.

WB-M girls drop low-scoring contest

In a low-scoring non-conference girls basketball contest, West Bend-Mallard fell to the Emmetsburg, 34-28.
Kierstin Montag led a balanced Wolverine scoring attack with eight points.

E-Hawks fly past WB-M boys

Emmetsburg used a big third quarter to blow open a three-point game at halftime and went on to a 63-42 non-conference boys basketball victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.
Collin Montag was the only player in double figures for the Wolverines with 18 points.

NU boys, girls split in non-conference tilts

The North Union boys lost a 63-51 non-conference boys basketball contest on Tuesday, Jan. 12, to former league opponent Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire. Aidan Fries poured in a team-leading 16 points to lead the Warriors.

Warriors wrestle at Lake Mills Duals

North Union competed in the Lake Mills Duals on Saturday, Jan. 16 and came home with a 1-3 record on the day of wrestling.
The green-black-and-silver opened the day with a 47-30 loss to North Butler/Clarksville before falling to Lake Mills by the score 75-6. The Warriors fell 64-18 to the Southeast Polk junior varsity and ended the day with a 54-18 win over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.
 

Zabka, Harris win South Hardin titles

Jacob Zabka and Brandon Harris won individual titles to highlight the performances on Saturday, Jan. 16, of the Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad at the Storm Invitational.
The red-and-black advanced six wrestlers into the championship matches. The team finished third in the team standings with 168 points.

BGHS moving to 8-man football

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan’s football program will play in the eight-man ranks for the 2021 season. The Bishop Garrigan school board recently approved the change from 11-man to eight-man football for the next cycle from the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA).

Wolverines 4th, Warriors finish 7th at G-T/R-A Invitational

GRAETTINGER—West Bend-Mallard placed fourth with 133 points and North Union finished seventh with 95.5 points at the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 9.

AHS splits two matches at Dick Kennedy Duals

WEBSTER CITY—The Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad split a pair of matches on Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Dick Kennedy Duals, and the team now has an overall season dual meet record of 13-3.

Algona girls roll past St. Edmond

ALGONA—The young Algona Bulldog girls basketball squad notched their second victory of the year on Friday, Jan. 8 with a solid 48-32 North Central Conference win over the St. Edmond Gaels.
The red-and-black played a nice first quarter before building a 10-point advantage at halftime. The home team built the lead as high as 24 points in the third period.

Golden Bears defeat West Hancock

BRITT—Bishop Garrigan outscored West Hancock 18-10 in the final eight minutes to rally for a 55-50 Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball victory over the Eagles on Friday, Jan. 8.
West Hancock led 12-11 at the conclusion of the first quarter before the black-and-gold rallied to hold a 31-24 advantage at intermission. The home team had a strong third period to take a 40-37 lead into the final frame where the Golden Bears rallied for the victory.
 

North Union corrals first win

EAGLE GROVE—North Union outscored Eagle Grove 14-8 in the final frame to post their first win of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 5, with a 38-32 Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball victory over the Eagles.
The green-black-and-silver led 6-2 at the end of the first quarter and held a 19-8 advantage at intermission. The Eagles outscored the Warriors 16-5 in the third period to deadlock the game at 24-24 heading into the fourth quarter of league action.
 

Sam Fehr leads WBM to second win

WEST BEND—Sophomore Sam Fehr poured in 20 points and yanked down 11 rebounds to help lead the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys basketball team to their second victory of the season with a 54-53 non-conference win over the Eagle Grove Eagles.

WB-M girls improve to 6-2 overall

CHURDAN—West Bend-Mallard improved to 6-2 overall on the year by handing Paton-Churdan just its second loss of the season with a 41-34 non-conference girls basketball victory over the Rockets on Tuesday, Jan. 5.
The contest was deadlocked at 8-8 after the first eight minutes of action before the home team eased out to a 22-17 advantage at halftime. The purple-and-gold trailed 30-28 at the end of the third period before rallying to outscore Paton-Churdan 13-4 in the fourth quarter.

Warriors take conference road win

EAGLE GROVE—Starting the new year on the road on Tuesday, Jan. 5, the North Union Warrior girls basketball squad earned a 57-34 Top of Iowa Conference win over the Eagle Grove Eagles.
The Warriors started fast with a 20-10 advantage at the conclusion of the first period. The green-black-and-silver also enjoyed leads of 31-20 at the end at halftime and 39-26 as the fourth quarter began.
