5 players back to the Kossuth County Advance All-Area Baseball Team

A group of five talented players will return to the 16th annual Kossuth County Advance All-Area Baseball first team this season.
Algona’s Cameren Rindone and Bishop Garrigan’s Isaiah Byrkeland make the squad for the third time while Algona’s Aaron Weringa, Wyatt Streit and Tyler Manske all are two-time choices.

Nelson wins annual Weishaar Memorial

ALGONA—Adel’s Dylan Nelson led all 25 laps to collect the $1,000 first place winnings in the second annual Jess Weishaar Memorial and IMCA Mid-Summer Hobby Stock Shootout held on Thursday, July 22, at the Kossuth County Speedway.

Hunting With Heroes now a 3-track tour

   ALGONA—It just keeps getting bigger every year. The fifth annual “Hunting With Heroes Salute to Veterans” is expanding this summer into a three track tour.
The event has become the biggest draw at the Kossuth County Speedway during the season and will expand this year to Clay County Fairgrounds in Spencer on Wednesday, July 28.

North Union drops a pair of games at state softball

FORT DODGE—Earlham started quickly and turned away a possible seventh inning rally in a 7-4, first-round victory over the North Union Warriors on Monday, July 19, in the Class 2A state softball tournament.
Pella Christian scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 3-3 deadlock and give the Eagles an upset 5-3 victory over the North Union Warriors on Tuesday, July 20 in the consolation round of the Class 2A state softball tournament.
 

N-F eliminates BG

FONDA—Newell-Fonda scored five runs in its final two at bats to break a 2-2 deadlock and record a 7-2, Class 1A district baseball win Saturday, July 17, over Bishop Garrigan.
The home team scored single runs in both the first and second stanzas for an early advantage. The black-and-gold plated one run in both the second and third frames to tie the contest at 2-2.

WB-M’s season comes to an end at Newell-Fonda

FONDA—West Bend-Mallard’s baseball season came to an end on Tuesday, July 13, as the Newell-Fonda Mustangs handed them an 11-1, five-inning loss in the Class 1A district semi-finals.

Lions end Algona’s season

ALGONA—Clear Lake and Algona split their two regular season North Central Conference baseball contests with the Lions winning 5-3 at Clear Lake while the red-and-black prevailed 10-4 at Bulldog Park.
But on Friday, July 16, in the Class 3A sub-state round opener, it was all about the black-and-gold as the Lions brought their bats to Algona and handed the Bulldogs an 18-1, four-inning defeat.

Shryock earns career win number 500

ALGONA—To say that Kelly Shryock’s racing career has been special would be a huge understatement. The veteran driver reached yet another milestone on Thursday, July 15, at the Kossuth County Speedway as he earned his 500th career victory.
The milestone win came with a little icing on the cake for Shryock as the Beck’s Hybrid Stock Car Special paid a cool $1,000 to the victor on Thursday evening.

Arndorfer wins Showboat Open

ALGONA—Mike Arndorfer grew up playing the River Road Golf Course when he was a youngster. He always wanted to win the Showboat Open held during the Founders’ Day celebration but the title had always eluded him.
But Arndorfer buried a 12-foot birdie putt to win the crown on the first playoff hole to cap off a huge, final, 10-hole run on Sunday, July 11, at the River Road Golf Club just north of Algona.

Cross-town baseball battle ends with a walk-off

ALGONA—The annual cross-town baseball battle between Algona and Bishop Garrigan on Tuesday, July 6, featured a little bit of everything.
The contest saw the visitors built an early 7-1 advantage only to see the red-and-black rally for an 8-7 lead. Throw in a little much needed rain from skies above, nine different pitchers toeing the mound and that all resulted in 9-8 walk-off win for the Bulldogs.

No. 1 Knights beat Algona 13-4

MASON CITY—Algona trailed just 5-2 after three innings to top-ranked Mason City Newman but the Knights outscored the red-and-black 8-2 the rest of the game and went onto a 13-4 non-conference baseball victory over the Bulldogs.
Wyatt Streit, Tyler Manske and Miles Goche all had two hits in the contest while teammates Garrett Goche and Stren Crouch each added a single.

Mustangs close out Warriors’ season, 10-0

FONDA—North Union’s 2021 season came to an end as the Newell-Fonda Mustangs handed the green-black-and-silver a 10-0, five-inning Class 1A district baseball loss on Monday, July 12.
The Warriors had one hit in the contest, a single by Jay Heinen. Kegan Boland and Heinen shared the pitching duties with Heinen taking the loss on the hill.

Golden Bears defeat G-T/R-A in district opener

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan opened Class 1A district baseball play on Monday, July 12, with a 12-2, six-inning victory over the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans.
Drew Fogarty pitched six solid innings on the bump to get the win for the black-and-gold. He allowed two unearned runs on seven hits while fanning seven and issued one base-on-balls.

WB-M beats West Hancock in extra innings to start districts

FONDA—Nolan Ford knocked in Aaron Gambell with a two-out single in the top of the ninth inning to give the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines a 4-3, nine-inning opening round district baseball win over the West Hancock Eagles on Monday, July 12.

Rockets fly past WB-M in regional softball opener

WEST BEND—Ar-We-Va broke open a tight 1-0 softball game with a nine-run fourth inning and went onto a 14-0, five-inning win over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines.
The contest was played on Tuesday, July 6, in the opening round of the Class 1A regional tournament. The purple-and-gold finished the season with an overall mark of 1-20 while the Rockets moved on to the next round at 10-10.

No. 1 Mustangs end BGHS softball season

NEWELL—Top-ranked Newell-Fonda pounded out a total of 13 hits in a 11-1, five-inning Class 1A regional softball quarterfinal win on Wednesday, July 7, over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.
The Mustangs scored three runs in the first inning and added another in the third stanza for an early 4-0 advantage in the contest.
