Bulldogs improve 11-1; rated 5th

Algona started slow but responded with three strong final quarters to hand Clarion-Goldfield a 46-31 North Central Conference defeat in girls basketball action.
The fifth-ranked Bulldogs improved to 11-1 overall on the year are now 6-1 in conference play, while the Cowgirls fell to 6-7 on the season and are now just 2-4 in the league.

BGHS cruises in rated tilt

The old saying goes, "when you're hot you're hot; when you're not you're not." Bishop Garrigan was hot, and Mason City Newman was not as the ninth-ranked Golden Bears cruised past the 10th-rated Knights by the score of 82-48.
The black and gold connected on 35 of 57 overall field goals for 61.4 percent, hit three of 11 attempts behind the three-point line for 27.2 percent and made nine of 16 free throws for 56.2 percent.

Grimm, Fehr place third at conference tourny

Coleman Grimm and Connor Fehr both finished in third place to highlight the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad at theTwin Lakes Conference tournament on the campus of Buena Vista University Saturday, Jan. 12.

Wall of fame committee makes some changes

The Algona High School Wall of Fame Committee announced a few changes for the 2019 induction ceremonies. This year, the Wall of Fame ceremony will be in conjunction with the first home game of the football season, which is Aug. 30.
In addition, an indoor tailgate supper will be in the high school commons.

Algona made a long road trip to Hampton a lot more enjoyable, as the Bulldogs came back to town with a 66-45 North Central Conference boys basketball victory over Hampton-Dumont.

Golden Bears top Humboldt 63-55

Sophomore Kaylyn Meyers poured in a career-high 32 points to help lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls basketball squad to a 63-55 nonconference victory over the Humboldt Wildcats.
Meyers went 11 of 19 from the floor, including two of three behind the three-point arc and made eight of 12 free throws.

Devine wins title at Forest City

Senior Carson Devine won three matches to capture the 160-pound title and highlight the performances of the Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad at the Forest City Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 5.
Teammates Luke McKenna and Cole Lewis were both runners-up, while Cole Johnson was third, and Gavin Meints placed fourth.

Iowa State Bank donates to Garrigan, AHS football squads

Iowa State Bank announced it has made a donation to both the Algona (AHS) and Bishop Garrigan football teams following the sales of playoff T-shirts during both teams' playoff runs.
T-shirt sales resulted in donations of $3,171 to AHS and $2,497 to Bishop Garrigan High School.
