Warriors roll by Vikings behind  Sam Nielsen’s double-double

NORTHWOOD—Heading east for a non-conference tussle on Monday, Dec. 13, No. 12 ranked (Class 2A) North Union rolled past the Northwood-Kensett Vikings by the score of 64-42.

The green-black-and-silver took a 10-4 lead at the end of the first period and extended that advantage to 27-12 at halftime and led 46-27 heading into the fourth quarter.

Cadets’ 4th period rally hands AHS NCC loss

IOWA FALLS—Iowa Falls-Alden out-scored the Algona Bulldogs 15-10 in the final eight minutes to take a 56-51 North Central Conference win on Saturday, Dec. 11.

Algona held a slim 15-13 lead at the conclusion of the first period and took a 30-26 advantage to the locker room at intermission and the contest was deadlocked at 41-41 headed into the fourth quarter.

Wolverines fall at H-M-S

HARTLEY—Stepping outside of Twin Lakes Conference play, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine boys basketball team dropped a 66-45 decision on Monday, Dec. 13 to the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Hawks.

The home team jumped out to a 19-6 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter and increased that advantage to 35-16 at halftime. The Hawks also led 48-34 heading into the fourth period of action.

Lake Mills remains undefeated with win over BGHS

ALGONA—Lake Mills remained undefeated on the year with a 67-40 Top of Iowa Conference boys basketball victory over the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears.

The visitors raced out to a 23-4 lead at the conclusion of the first period and increased the lead to 47-16 at intermission. The Bulldogs also took a 60-28 lead heading into the fourth quarter of action.

High-scoring Midgets too strong for NU boys

ESTHERVILLE—Estherville-Lincoln Central raced out to huge early lead and never looked back in an 84-38 non-conference boys basketball victory on Thursday, Dec. 9, over the North Union Warriors.

Leading the green-black-and-silver in scoring with eight points each was Danyal Fothergill and Logan Odegaard closely followed by Teagon Fothergill with seven points.

Algona slams Cadets, Lions

IOWA FALLS—Algona earned a pair of North Central Conference wrestling match wins on Thursday, Dec. 9 by defeating Iowa Falls-Alden 70-6 and Clear Lake by the score of 52-15.

In the victory over Iowa Falls-Alden, the red-and-black got falls from Tate Slagle, Ian Fehr, Brandon Harris, Colby Jennings and Jagger O’Neall. Jacob Zabka won by major decision while teammates Isaac Wilson and Luke Carter both won by decisions.

Aaron Massner places second at Emmetsburg

EMMETSBURG—Senior Aaron Massner was the runner-up at 138 pounds on Saturday, Dec. 11 to highlight the performances of the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines wrestling squad at the Bob Roethler Invitational.

Massner opened the day with a pin of Dayton Strohman of Emmetsburg in 54 seconds and won by fall in 1:46 over Ryan Pyle of Okoboji in the quarterfinals.

Warriors drop three Top of Iowa Conference matches

SAINT ANSGAR—Traveling east on a long road trip, the North Union Warriors wrestling squad lost three Top of Iowa Conference matches on Thursday, Dec. 9.

The green-black-and-silver lost to Saint Ansgar by the score of 36-33 before falling to Central Springs by the count of 57-24 and was defeated by Lake Mills by the score of 57-21.

Forest City pulls away, hands Warrior boys first loss

FOREST CITY—Forest City pulled away in the second half on Tuesday, Dec. 7, to hand the North Union Warrior boys basketball team their first loss of the season with a 63-37 Top of Iowa Conference defeat.

Forest City held an 8-6 lead at the end of the first stanza and took a 24-17 advantage to the locker room at intermission. The Indians increased the lead to 44-33 at the conclusion of the third quarter of play.

No. 4 E-LC hands NU girls first loss

ESTHERVILLE—The fourth-ranked girls basketball squad in Class 3A flexed their muscles on Thursday, Dec. 9 as Estherville-Lincoln Central handed the North Union Warriors their first loss of the season by the score of 69-40.

Naomi Jones led North Union in scoring with nine points. Lily Henderson tossed in seven points closely followed by both Sam Nielsen and Emily Meyer with six points.

Golden Bears move to 2-0 in league

ALGONA—Junior post player Audi Crooks poured in 20 points and ripped down 12 rebounds on Tuesday, Dec. 7 to lead the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear girls basketball squad to a 67-18 Top of Iowa Conference win over the Lake Mills Bulldogs.

The black-and-gold built a 19-4 lead at the conclusion of the first period and doubled that score to 38-8 at halftime. The second-ranked Golden Bears held a 52-16 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Algona girls earn first victory

ALGONA—Playing for the second straight night, the Algona Bulldog girls basketball squad picked up their first victory of the season on Saturday, Dec. 4 with a 46-39 win over the Charles City Comets in non-conference action.

The home team built a lead as high as 17 points in the contest only to see the orange-and-black battle back in the second half to make things interesting.

Fast start propels Bears to 1st win

ALGONA—Scoring the first 16 points of the ballgame, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bear boys basketball team never looked back on Tuesday, Nov. 30 in their Top of Iowa Conference opener with a 75-34 victory.

The home team led a huge 26-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended their advantage to 48-18 at intermission. The black-and-gold took a commanding 62-38 lead into the final eight minutes of action.

Slagle third at Cliff Keene, Bulldogs 11th of 28

INDEPENDENCE—Freshman Tate Slagle finished in third place at 126 pounds to highlight the performances of the Algona Bulldogs wrestling squad at the Cliff Keene Invitational.

The red-and-black ended up in 11th place in the team standings with 209 points in the two day tournament held on Friday, Dec. 3 and Saturday, Dec. 4 with a total of 28 teams competing.

Wolverines drop Twin Lakes opener

GOWRIE—In its Twin Lakes Conference opener, the West Bend-Mallard Wolverine girls basketball squad dropped a 66-54 decision to the Southeast Valley Jaguars on Friday, Dec. 3.

The home team led 17-8 at the end of the first period and took a 32-25 advantage to the locker room at intermission. The Jaguars also led 46-39 heading into the fourth quarter of action.
