Golden Bears squeeze past stubborn Bronco squad

ALGONA—Belmond-Klemme came into Monday, June 10’s Top of Iowa Conference baseball game at 0-10 while Bishop Garrigan was 10-3 on the year.

But the Broncos did not play like that, as the Golden Bears held on for a 7-4 victory. The game was tied at 4-4 after two innings of play before the black-and-gold scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth inning for the win.

Slagle powers Algona past Cadets 13-5

IOWA FALLS—Tate Slagle belted two home runs, scored three runs and knocked in five RBI to help lead the Algona Bulldogs to a 13-5 North Central Conference baseball victory on Wednesday, June 5 over the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets.

Slagle blasted his fourth and fifth round trippers of the season to go along with a single to lead a nine-hit attack by the red-and-black.

Golden Bears win key early season league game

FOREST CITY—In a key early season Top of Iowa Conference baseball contest featuring last year’s co-champions, the Bishop Garrigan Golden Bears defeated the Forest City Indians 7-3 on Wednesday, June 5.

Leading 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning, the black-and-gold scored four times to seal the win. Justin Bauer, Tate Foertsch and Carter Schwab each had a key single in the frame.

BGHS softball squad wins league road game

FOREST CITY—Bishop Garrigan scored eight times in the first three innings and went on to win a 14-5 Top of Iowa Conference softball contest over the Forest City Indians on Wednesday, June 5.

The black-and-gold tallied four runs in the top of the first stanza, scored two more in the second, third, fifth and seventh and added a single run in the sixth inning as the Indians scored two runs in the second and fifth and a single run in the bottom of the seventh stanza.

Garrigan Bear girls improve to 7-1 overall

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan continued their winning ways with a 12-0, three-inning Top of Iowa Conference softball victory on Friday, June 7 over the West Hancock Eagles.

The black-and-gold scored twice in the opening frame and added five tallies in both the second and third frames to end the league contest early to improve to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in the conference.

West Bend-Mallard tops Cougars 8-6

WEST BEND—The West Bend-Mallard Wolverine junior varsity softball squad took a hard-fought 8-6 victory over the Manson Northwest Webster Cougars on Monday, June 10.

The purple-and-gold scored three times in both the second and fifth innings and added single tallies in the fourth and sixth frames to earn the victory.

Avery Weydert ripped a double and a triple to lead the offense as Leah Hoffman had a single and a two-bagger and Kasey Douglas added a pair of singles.

Warriors split pair of games at Spirit Lake tournament

SPIRIT LAKE—North Union split a pair of games at the Spirit Lake tournament on Saturday, June 8 as their overall season record fell to 8-5 on the year.

The green-black-and-silver topped Marcus Meriden Cleghorn/Remsen Union 12-0 in five innings in their first game but lost to fourth-ranked West Monona 6-3 in the their second contest.

AHS loses heartbreaker to Iowa Falls-Alden

IOWA FALLS—Iowa Falls-Alden scored the only run of the game in the bottom of sixth inning in a 1-0 North Central Conference softball victory over the Algona Bulldogs softball squad on Wednesday, June 5.

Reagan Haynes ripped a pair of doubles to lead the red-and-black at the plate while teammates Ryan Haynes, Casey VanOtterloo, Ashley Cantu and Paige Vileta each added a single in the six-hit attack.

WB-M drops 12-9 Twin Lakes contest to Titans

LYTTON—West Bend-Mallard let an early 8-0 advantage get away on Wednesday, June 5 as the South Central Calhoun Titans rallied for a 10-9 Twin Lakes Conference baseball win over the purple-and-gold.

The visitors scored two runs in the top of the first inning; tallied five times in the second and once in the third frame for an early 8-0 advantage.

Clear Lake edges Algona 9-6

CLEAR LAKE—Clear Lake edged Algona 9-6 on Monday, June 10 in a North Central Conference softball contest.

The Lions jumped out to early leads of 3-0 and 9-1, but had to hold off a late rally by the red-and-black to pick up the league victory.

Wolverines fall to Sioux Central 16-2

WEST BEND—Sioux Central scored in every inning in a 16-2 softball victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines junior varsity squad on Friday, June 7.

The purple-and-gold scored single runs in the first and seventh innings in the loss and had five hits in the game, but committed nine errors.

Racing returns to Algona for Week No. 2

ALGONA—After Mother Nature was the big winner last week, dirt track racing returned to the Kossuth County Speedway on Thursday, May 30 for the second week of action as a total of 57 cars signed in at the pit shack.

Gerald Curry in the American Made Late Models and Matt Looft in the sport mods were repeat winners as the other five classes each had a new winner than week number one.

Bulldogs win in extra innings for second straight night

ALGONA—For the second straight evening, the Algona Bulldogs softball squad won in eight innings on Thursday, May 30 as the red-and-black defeated the Southeast Valley Jaguars by the final score of 4-3.

The visitors scored first in the contest with a run in the top of the first stanza and the game stayed that way until the Bulldogs scored three times in the bottom of the fourth frame for a 3-1 advantage.

Algona drills Gaels 16-1 in four innings

ALGONA—Algona erupted for six runs in the opening frame and ended the game early with eight more on the bottom of the fourth in a 16-1 North Central Conference baseball rout of the St. Edmond Gaels on Monday, June 3.

The red-and-black had just five hits in the lopsided win but took advantage of four St. Edmond errors, 12 base-on-balls and a pair of hit batters.

Bishop Garrigan topples Cardinals 11-1

ALGONA—Garner-Hayfield/Ventura scored first, but Bishop Garrigan responded with the next 11 runs in an 11-1, six-inning Top of Iowa Conference baseball win over the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals on Wednesday, May 29.

The visitors scored first with a run in the top of the third inning before the black-and-gold answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
