ALGONA — A funeral Mass for Sheryl L. Plathe was held on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, at St. Cecelia Catholic Church with Father Edward M. Girres and Reverend Mr. Bill Black officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
Sheryl Lynn Plathe was born July 18, 1954, in Estherville, daughter of Melvin and Betty J. (Beadle) Engelbarts. She grew up on a farm near Algona, graduating from Algona High School in 1972. She then obtained a nursing degree from Iowa Lakes Community College obtaining her LPN. Sheryl was married to John Plathe on Aug. 21, 1976, in Swea City.
Sheryl worked as a LPN, and later as a RN, at Kossuth Regional Health Center for 39 years. She also worked for Dr. Condoleon for a short time. She retired in March, 2016, when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.
She loved being with family. Her children and grandchildren were the joy of her life. She spent her free time on the water enjoying fishing and she loved to dance. Sheryl died peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, at her home surrounded by her family and close friends.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, John ‘Jack’ Plathe of Algona; three children and eight grandchildren: Laura (Cliff) Gibson of Urbandale and their children, Talen and Beckett; Lisa (Joe) Bartolo of Algona and their children, Ava, Emmi, Addie, Tate and Ellie; and Michael (Lindsay) Plathe of Trimble, Mo., and their son, Collin. She is also survived by her dad, Melvin Engelbarts of Swea City; two brothers and three sisters: Darwin (Betsy) Engelbarts of Titonka; Susan Mergan of Algona; Diane (James) Bassett of Kansas City, Mo.; Donna (Dean) Hilbert of Luverne; and Dwayne Engelbarts of Minneapolis, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Engelbarts; her parents-in-law, Arthur and Helen Plathe; and two sisters-in-law, Donna Pickard and Jeanne Vakulskas.
