ALGONA — Roger Foley, age 85 of Algona, passed away Monday, June 19, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Society in Algona. Memorial services were held on Friday, June 23 at 2 p.m., at First Lutheran Church in Algona with Rev. Norm Bauer officiating. Burial took place at South St. John’s Cemetery near Cylinder. Military rites conducted by Algona American Legion Hagg-Turner Post No. 90 and Algona VFW Post No. 2541.
Paul Roger Foley, Jr., the son of Paul Roger SR. And Glorene (Christiansen) Foley, was born on April 13, 1932 in St. Joseph, Mo. He graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1950. Roger served in the U.S. Navy enlisting in 1952 and serving on the Battleship New Jersey as a Machinists mate. He did battle in the Korean War, manning a 65mm deck cannon. After the war, he did a tour of Europe, visiting ports of call in 17 countries. Roger was honorably discharged in 1956.
On April 13, 1958 Roger married Myrna Meling at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Depew. Roger and Myrna started their married life in Adams, Minn., on a farm. Then they moved to the family farm near Cylinder. In 1964 they moved to Humboldt where they owned and operated ‘Foley’s Flowers’ until 1970. From 1970 -75 they owned and operated Foley’s Sports Center in Algona. Roger and Myrna then owned and operated a bowling alley in Gowrie and Jefferson. In 1986 they moved back to Algona. Roger was a member of First Lutheran Church, Algona VFW and the American Motorcycle Association. He loved racing motorcycles, bowling, fishing, camping, water skiing and boating and vacations with his family. The love of his grandchildren was a very important part of his later years!
Left to cherish Roger’s memory is his children, Michael (Kathie) Foley of Wesley, Karen (Patrick) Eagan of Mineral Point, Wis., Mark Foley of El Cajon, Calif. and Kellee (Shane) Rolling of Fort Dodge; grandchildren, Kari (Brian) Kinkade, Mick (Rhiannon) Foley, Allisa (Courtney) Bahney, Sara Foley, Taylor Foley, Matthew (Brooke) Eagan, Molly (Amanda) Eagan, Mary Kate (Joe) Holter, Kara McWilliams, Jaryd (Shelbi) Dutton, Nikki (Dustin) Goraczkowski and Brooke Baxter; great grandchildren, Kloee Thilges, Carter Thilges, Kellen Kinkade, Brynn Kinkade, Natalie McWilliams, Addison McWilliams, Oliver Goraczkowski, Piper Jo Holter, Sloane Holter, Keeley Eagan, Evie Eagan, Olivia Wilson and Estie Eagan; and sister, Nancy (John) Tammen of Garner.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Myrna in 2015; a grandson, Bryant Foley and brother, Bob Foley.
