Lead Summary

March 25, 1928 — Jan. 10, 2017

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m., on Friday, Jan. 13, 2017, at Oakcrest Funeral Services, Algona, with the Rev. Chris Burnett officiating. Visitation was held one hour prior to the service from noon to 1 p.m., also at Oakcrest Funeral Services.
Robert Martin Wilberg was born in Fenton on March 25, 1928 (Passion Sunday) 10:35 a.m., at 8 ¼ pounds.
He graduated from Seneca High School in 1945. Farming until joining the U.S. Army in 1951, where he spent 18 months in Okinawa. After his honorary discharge in 1953 he continued his farming career on a farm near Lone Rock. His brother claims Bob was a born farmer.
Bob salvaged buildings, reclaiming and repurposing the lumber, sometimes for wooden bird and animal cutouts, other times to rebuild on a new location. Preservation of land for wildlife was always a concern for Bob. He planted a grove of trees for wildlife on a portion of his 40 acres. He enjoyed nature activities such as duck hunting and fishing.
Another pastime was gardening. He grew and decorated gourds of various sizes and shapes making them into birdhouses and decorations. After retiring he would spend afternoons with friends in Algona. Evenings would find him at home watching movies.
In 2014 an illness sent him to Algona Manor where he lived the rest of his life, selling his home and personal belongings in 2015. At the Manor he participated in the games and worked jigsaw and pencil puzzles.
Bob was a quiet, gentle man who was set in his ways and lived a simple life. He had an infectious smile that could light up a room. We will miss him.
He is survived by two brothers, Marvin and Raymond and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Eda (Johannesen) Wilberg, a sister, Lois Helgen, and four brothers, Jerry, Donald, Leonard (Wayne), Lloyd.
