Theodore ‘Ted’ Southgate Herbst

October 24, 1927 - December 15, 2021

Theodore (Ted) Southgate Herbst passed peacefully on December 15, 2021, at the age of 94.  Ted was born Oct. 24, 1927, in Cresco Township (Algona), to Theodore Tennant and Olive Southgate Herbst.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret Lacy Herbst, and daughters Lori (Bob) Dominiczak and Teri (John) Bill, grandchildren Jacob (Elaine) and Sara Bill, and great-grandchildren Fynn and Henry Bill and many nieces and nephews. 

Ted and Margaret lived in Ted’s hometown, Algona, for most of their married life before moving to Germantown Wis., 12 years ago to live closer to their daughters.

Margaret and Ted met at Pinewood Lodge (Rhinelander, Wis.) in 1951 while Ted was vacationing from Iowa and Margaret was working at Pinewood on Lake Thompson where Margaret’s parents had a lake home. They are long time members of the Rhinelander Country Club and the Lake Thompson Association.

Ted was a WW II Navy veteran and enjoyed going on a Stars and Stripes Honor Flight in 2012. He loved spending his summers at the cottage on Lake Thompson in Rhinelander. He was a long-time member and choir director at First Congregational Church UCC in Algona and more recently sang in the choir at Ozaukee Congregational Church, Grafton, Wis. Ted was also a Mason and long time Lions Club member.

A remembrance service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8, at Northland Cemetery Chapel, 4239 North Shore Drive, Rhinelander. Friends and family are invited to attend.
