Stephen John Detrick

November 3, 1948 — April 2, 2021

Stephen John Detrick, 72, of Brooksville, Florida, passed away April 2, 2021, under the loving care of his family and Hospice.

Steve was born on Nov. 23, 1948, in Algona. Steve is the oldest of 17 children to Robert and Kathleen Detrick. In 1969 he married Jane Fisher of Ames. Early in the marriage they bore two daughters, Melissa Ann and Vanessa Jean. In 1970 Steve enlisted in the U.S. National Guard where he served three years as a cook and then as a drill sergeant. In 1980, Steve moved to Tampa, Fla., eventually settling in Brooksville in the early 1990s. In 1994 Steve married Deborah Detrick.

Steve loved fishing and believed in hard work. There wasn’t a job he wouldn’t pass up, and he did the job well. He found humor in his practical jokes and making people laugh. Most importantly Steve loved spending time with family.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 26 years, Deborah Detrick of Brooksville, Fla.; his daughter: Vanessa Detrick of Ames; his step-daughters: Stephanie Begin and her husband, Cory of Brooksville, Fla., and Tina Darts and her husband, Richard of Citrus County, Fla.; two grandchildren: Daniel and Adriana of Ames; several step-grandchildren: Dakotah, Dalton, Gabe, Johnathan and Blake of Fla.; 16 Siblings: Jackie Pedersen of West Liberty; Joe Detrick of New Providence; Dale Detrick (Gilberta) of Kansas City, Mo.; Beverly Kaiser (Wayne) of Algona; Mary Anliker (Steve) of Cedar Rapids; Linda Detrick of Emmetsburg; Jim Detrick (Lori) of Ankeny; Jean Detrick of Algona; Jon Detrick (Lori) of Algona; Charles Detrick of Algona; Jeff Detrick (Jamie) of Ankeny; Nick Detrick (Barb) of Algona; Richard Detrick of Spencer; Virginia Bubke of Spirit Lake; Timothy Detrick (Michelle) of Council Bluffs; and Robert Detrick (Beth) of Casper, Wyo.; an aunt, Bette Kern of Algona; and an uncle, Chuck Huber of Albuquerque, N.M.

Preceding Steve in death are his parents Robert and Kathleen Detrick, his oldest daughter, Melissa Ann, his first wife, Jane Ellen Fisher Detrick Wold, step-grandson Zach, and brother-in-law John Pedersen.

Memorial services are being planned for Saturday, July 31, at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Oakcrest Funeral Services. Condolences may be left at www.oakcrestfuneralservices.com.
