Shirley “Sherry” Carson, 89, of Sioux Falls, S.D. passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls, SD.

Graveside service will be 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Memorial Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Miller Funeral Home Southside Chapel, 7400 S. Minnesota Ave., Sioux Falls, S.D. For online obituary and guest register go to the website at www.millerfh.com.

Shirley Lorraine Rood, daughter of Oden and Palma (Espe) Rood, was born April 8, 1935 in Bode. She grew up there where she graduated from Bode High School in 1953. She then attended Colorado Woman’s College where she graduated in 1955. She then attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City where she graduated in 1958.

Sherry was united in marriage with Les Carson on Aug. 16, 1958, in Bode. They moved to Sioux Falls, S.D. where they were blessed with four daughters and one son. Sherry loved being a home maker and was dedicated to her family.

Sherry was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church. Pastor Leon Bill asked Sherry to establish a church library which she lovingly and faithfully served for 15 years. She was a member of LCLA Lutheran Church Library Association. She served as a past member of National Training in Communication (formally Toast Mistress) and various Augustana Groups like Augustana Women, Crafts Club and Book Club.

Sherry dedicated many years to researching her Norwegian ancestry including several trips to Norway, visiting familial properties. She enjoyed writing stories of her childhood on the family farm in Bode. She went as far back telling the stories of her grandparents and great-grandparents to pass the stories to future generations.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Pam Waldner, Sioux Falls, S.D., Linda Carson, Sioux Falls, S.D., Cindy (Eric Peterson) Wheeler, Hood River, Ore., Melissa (Michael) Ryan, Lincoln, Neb.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Christina (Tyler) Bradley and their son, Carter; Jordan Glover and his son, Ben Glover; Megan Ryan and Carson (Tara Brockman) Ryan and their children, Cosette and Cyprus; Erin Wheeler and Drake Wheeler.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Les; son, Steve; and grandson, Benjamin Waldner.

Memorials may be given to Trinity Baptist Church in Sioux Falls, SD or the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode, IA in Sherry’s name.
