Sandy “Betsy” Hinz, 83 of Algona, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 24  at 12:30 p.m. at Lentz Funeral Home in Algona. Interment took place at Lu Verne Township Cemetery in Lu Verne. Visitation was held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Lentz Funeral Home in Algona. Sandra Beth Berg was born on Oct. 23, 1940, to Harry and Mary (Oftedal) Berg in Cottonwood, Minn. Betsy was raised on a farm near Hanley Falls, Minn. She was baptized, confirmed and became a member of Yellow Medicine Evangelical Lutheran Church. Betsy was an active member in Sunday school, parochial school, Lutheran League and Church Camps Bible School. Her education was at Hanley Falls Public School where she attended first through twelfth grade.

Betsy was united into marriage to Donald Feist; father of their six girls: Cyndi, Tamara, Jacqualine, Terri, Trudy and Tina. During those years in her spare time she cleaned government offices and worked at Continental Telephone Company for 14 years.

In 1980, Betsy moved to Iowa and on March 8, 1981, she was united in marriage to Norman Hinz in Swanville, Minn. With this union she gained four stepchildren: Greg, Laurie, Dawn and Erin Hinz. The couple joined Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona and were active members for several years. In Algona, Betsy was employed at Northwestern Bell Telephone, Wiltgen’s, Happy Chef and Fleet Farm. Norm started a telephone equipment business where she worked. Betsy cleaned many houses in Algona and a couple of offices.

In retirement, she enjoyed playing cards, processing fruits and vegetables from the garden, making grape jelly and juice from the family concord grape vineyard. Betsy and Norm worked together and enjoyed their life together.

Left to cherish Betsy’s memory are her daughters: Tamara (Greg) Hinz of Humboldt, Jacqualine (Duane) Hegna of Stafford, Va., Terri (Gary) Wolf of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Trudy (Donald) Altman of Loves Park, Ill. and Tina (Jake) Jacobs of Urbandale; stepchildren: Lauri (Carl) Putze of Mankato, Minn., Gregory (Tamara) Hinz of Humboldt, Dawn (Charlie) Deutz of Marshall, Minn. and Erin Jensen of Marshall, Minn.; 18 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents: Harry and Mary Berg; husbands: Donald Feist and Norman Hinz; daughter: Cyndi Feist; grandson: Jon Hegna and six siblings.
