A funeral service for Rey was held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Algona. Visitation was held from 3 p.m. until the time of the service.

Reynaldo Tomas Cantu was born Aug. 11, 1980, in Algona; the son of Fernando “Ruben” and Maria del Rosario Teresa (Fuentes) Cantu. He grew up in Algona and graduated from Algona High School in 1999.

Following high school Rey began his working career at KFC in Algona, Winnebago in Forest City, and finished his working career after many years at Snap-on.

Rey’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was united in marriage to Samantha Uthof in April of  2005, and together they raised three children. Though they were later divorced, Rey remained a devoted father, actively involved in his children’s lives and supporting them in every way possible.

Outside of work, Rey had a love for the outdoors; he had a passion for golfing and kayaking. Rey also found joy in the game of pool and looked forward to pool night at Pep’s. He also enjoyed socializing with friends and having drinks at Billie Jo’s. Rey’s life was marked by a passion for connecting with others. He had a remarkable gift for conversation and could talk endlessly about any topic. Rey was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Washington Redskins fan.

Rey passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, June 20 at Mercy Medical Center – Mason City. He was 43.

He is survived by his children, Ashley, Evan and Ethan; mother, Rose; siblings, Rebecca (Lesa) Cantu, Fernando Ruben Jr. (Christine) Cantu, Rachel Cantu, Rosa Maria Stein; nieces and nephews, Alexander, Jordan, Brady, Shaliko, Olivia, Colby and Sabrina; great-nieces and great-nephew, Ayla, Bria and Felix. He is also survived by aunts and uncles, Fred Cantu, Maria (Jeff) Edwards, Melba Cantu.

Preceding him in death are his son, Andrew; father, Fernando “Ruben” Cantu; uncles; Fermin and Francisco “Frank” (Belia) Cantu; aunt Bonnie Cantu; and a niece, Angel.
