Funeral services for Neva Johnson are 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023, at the First Lutheran Church in Algona. Burial will be at the Riverview Cemetery.

Neva Mae (Miller) Johnson was born on May 13, 1937, in rural Sioux County to Emma (Tank) and Edwin Miller. She grew up on the family farm, attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1955. She earned a B.A. at Wartburg College, Waverly, in 1959, and then began teaching at Laura Wilder Elementary School in Sioux Falls, S.D. It was in Sioux Falls that she met the love of her life, Paul Johnson. The two were united in marriage on June 11, 1961, at Peace Lutheran Church, Sioux Center.

Neva and Paul began their married life in Sioux Falls, then moved to Canistota, S.D. In 1965, they moved to Blooming Prairie, Minn. and in 1974, to Algona where they resided for the rest of their lives.

They were active members of First Lutheran Church, Algona. Neva was deeply rooted in her faith and found joy in connecting with others. She was employed by Iowa Lakes Community College for a time, teaching current events classes at local nursing homes and senior apartments. She served as a volunteer for the Kossuth County C.A.R.E. team, Friends of the Algona Public Library, the Stinson Prairie Arts Council and Water’s Edge Nature Center. She also assisted Paul in his work for the Sullivan Building Foundation.

Neva was a loving and devoted mother to her four children, an enthusiastic grandmother to her twelve grandchildren, and a caring friend to many. She was a lover of nature, gardening, antiques, cooking, reading and travel. She and Paul traveled to many states and countries over the years.

Neva was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Paul Johnson, her parents, Edwin and Emma Miller, her siblings and their spouses – Ruth and Joe Franken, Inez and Don Siefken, Katie and Jim Munday, John and Mary Lou Miller; and by her in-laws Wanda and M.O. Lee.

She will be dearly missed by her children and their families: Matthew Johnson and Elizabeth Thimmesh of St. Paul, Minn. and sons Noah, Isaac and Theodore; Elisabeth Johnson and Eric Toudze of St. Paul, Minn., and children Schekina, David and Etienne; Peter and Janelle Johnson of Sartell, Minn., and children Adam, Julia and Wesley; Anna Johnson and Joerg Albrecht of Oak Park, Ill., and sons Henry, Lucas and Benjamin; by her siblings-in-law, Harriet and Don Scott, Cynthia Johnson, David and Jan Johnson, and by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Neva’s family would like to thank the staff of the Algona Good Samaritan home for their compassionate care for her during her residence there.
