Mary McEnroe was born Dec. 19, 1928, in Fort Dodge the daughter of Marvin B. Cain and Rita B. Cain (1897 - 1929). Mary’s mother passed away one year later. Mary lived in Fort Dodge until she was 10 years old under the care of her grandparents James F. Biggins and Mary T. Biggins. At that point in time Mary moved back to Algona and lived in Algona for the rest of her life. Mary attended St. Cecelia Academy School. After graduating from high school she attended the College of St. Catherine in Saint Paul, Minn. where she received a baccalaureate degree in nursing. On Nov. 11, 1950, Mary was united in marriage to Louis McEnroe at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Algona. After their marriage Louis farmed and Mary began her nursing career at St. Ann’s Hospital in Algona.
Mary worked at St Ann’s until the birth of her 2nd child. Even though her time spent working as a registered nurse was short-termed, nursing became her life long passion. She stayed current with her RN license well into her 60s. Mary enjoyed reading, dancing and writing poetry that rhymes. Her house had poetic messages in every room for the benefit of her children. She was passionate about politics and volunteering her time for causes dear to her. One major landmark event in her life was a luncheon at the White House during the Carter administration. She was a proud member of the Catholic Daughters organization. Mary was a truly amazing person whose passing has left a huge void in the hearts of her family. She was always willing to make sacrifices for her loved ones. Her caring disposition truly impacted everyone she met.
Mary died Saturday May 20 at the West Bend Health and Rehabilitation. She was 94.
