A Celebration of Life for Karla Schumacker, 84, of Algona, will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024, from 2 until 3 p.m. in the reception room of the GrandStay Hotel in Algona.  There will be a prayer service at 3 p.m. led by her son-in-law, Jason Mau.

Karla Mary (Recker) Schumacker was born on Thursday, Oct. 3, 1940, the daughter of Joseph Charles “Buster” and Irma Grace (Gilbertson) Recker. She grew up in Bancroft and attended St. John’s Catholic School until the 11th grade. She graduated from Swea City.

Karla spent the next few years in Los Angeles, Calif. She then moved to Colorado where she met the love of her life, William Schumacker. William and Karla were married on March 15, 1968. They made a home in Colorado for 35 years. She enjoyed being a Den Mother for her son’s troops. She worked at a mall in a soda pop shop making and selling 50 different kinds of popcorn. At Christmas time she would be Mrs. Santa to her Santa (Bill) for the mall. They enjoyed doing this for many years.

Her life was filled by doing hobbies she loved. She enjoyed painting ceramics, crocheting, reading, listening to the bible, crossword puzzles and spending time with her family.

Karla moved back to Algona to take care of her siblings. Edward and Candace lived with her and she cared for Edward until she was unable to. Candace resided with Karla until the time of her passing. Karla and Bill also ran the Acreage Motel in Algona before retirement.

Retirement for Karla was raising her great-grandson and caring for her sister, Candace.

Karla is survived by her husband William; her children, Kathleen (Jason) Mau, Lora Carroll, Sean (Mary Ipha) Schumacker and Tiffany (Jason) Tyler; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; She is also survived by her siblings, Candace Recker of Algona, Irma Recker of Colorado, Joleen Dietz of Ames and Ken Recker of Idaho; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, parent-in-laws, her brothers, Edward, Dennis, William, Dean and Vern; sister, Katheryn (Kay) Horswell and brother-in-law Stan Horswell.
