Galen Lee Bruhn was born May 20, 1969, in Algona, the son of William ‘Bill’ and Janice (Wood) Bruhn. He was accepted as a child of God through Holy Baptism at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Fairville, and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Fenton. He grew up in Fenton and graduated from Sentral High School in 1987. Following high school, he obtained a bachelor’s degree from Westmar College in Le Mars. Galen spent his career working in Human Resources.

Galen was a true ‘sports’ guy; whether he was participating or watching, he enjoyed everything. He played all sports growing up and throughout high school; and even continued his basketball career by playing at the college level. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. When Galen wasn’t on the court or field, you could find him relaxing indoors enjoying two of his favorite TV shows, Seinfeld and The David Letterman Show.

On June 27, 2006, he was united in marriage to Mary Reimers in Eastport, N.Y. His marriage to Mary introduced him to fatherhood to her two children. He loved Alex and Trisha and raising them brought him some of the greatest joys of his life. Even when Galen and Mary later divorced, he remained a strong and loving presence in their lives.

Spending time with family and friends was an important part of Galen’s life, especially being involved in the lives of Ross, Collin, and Mallory. He always looked forward to reunions, golf outings  and phone calls.

Galen died unexpectedly on Saturday, April 15 at UnityPoint Health - Trinity, Bettendorf. He was 53.

He is survived by his sister, Carolyn (Brett) Carlson of Algona; sister-in-law, Jennifer Smyser of Muscatine; former wife, Mary of Muscatine; nieces and nephews, Ross Carlson of Algona, Collin (Beatrice) Carlson of Montreal Quebec, Canada, Mallory Bruhn of Muscatine; stepchildren, Alex (Sarah) Reimers and their children Townes, Guthrie and Rowyn of Perry, and Trisha Reimers of Arlington Heights, Ill.; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents; brother, Brant Bruhn; infant brother, Justin (stillborn); and aunts and uncles.
