Donald Vincent Lickteig, age 90, of Algona passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023,  at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Aug. 21, at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish - St. Cecelia. Visitation was 12:30  p.m. until service time at the Presentation Center. Burial will take place at a later date. Services have been entrusted to Lentz Funeral Home of Algona.

Donald was born June 3, 1933, to Ambrose and Rose (McMahon) Lickteig in Lu Verne and grew up in Sexton. Donald graduated from St. Cecelia’s High School in 1951. He served in the Army from 1955-1956. After serving in the army, he returned to Algona area to farm with his brother Charles. Donald farmed corn and soybeans, raised hogs and developed his custom Lickteig’s Lean-Line Feed. He won many awards showing Hampshire hogs and also judged many area hog shows. He retired from farming in 1992.

Donald married Evelyn Thilges of West Bend on May 22, 1965. They lived on a farm on Hwy 18 where they raised their four children. In 1996, they moved to Oak Lake where he enjoyed fishing – catching 100’s of crappies a year to feed the community. He could clean a fish faster than almost anyone. Donald and Evelyn enjoyed traveling in the US, Canada and France. In the Army, Donald discovered his love for shrimp which become one of his favorite food. He would order thin and crispy shrimp pizza and shrimp was his entree of choice. Donald also enjoyed playing cribbage and other board games. He loved playing games with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Evelyn Thilges Lickteig, children Angela (John) Reinders of Missouri Valley, Linda Lickteig (Jim Purnell) of Treynor, Gary Lickteig of Algona and Kim Lickteig (Dan Leuthner) of Deerfield, Ill.; grandsons Dillon Reinders, Maxwell Leuthner and Vincent Leuthner.

He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Sr. Joan (Patricia) Lickteig, Charles Lickteig, Joan (Lickteig) Elbert, Mary Jane Lickteig and Ambrose “Timothy”.
