Donald Gene Miller was born Dec. 19, 1943, in Algona to Orval Diehl Miller and Myrle Lucille (Reed) Miller. He was raised in the rural Swea City area and graduated from Swea City High School in 1962.

On Sept. 4, 1965, he married Irene Pehrson. Together they raised three sons, Jon, James and Jared. Farm life was their choice, growing row crops, raising cows and sheep. Don also managed the Kossuth County Landfill for 37 years where he met many people from all over the county and state.

Following his sons’ and grandchildren’s activities brought him great enjoyment. One thing Don had fun doing was listening to music and dancing with Irene and granddaughters whenever he had the chance. He was a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Vikings and loved talking about the most recent season. Watching old westerns also kept him entertained. Don appreciated vacations and weekend travels with Irene, hunting for antique bargains. Together, Irene and Don fixed up the antiques, which led to their yearly antique sale. This was a time for them to see new and old friends. After a battle with West Nile Virus in 2013 his life was never the same. The side effects slowly took its toll.

Donald is survived by his wife Irene of 57 years, sons Jon (Jodi) of Spirit Lake; James (Gail) of Sumner and Jared (Krystal) of Livermore. Grandchildren Andrew (Brooke) Johnson, Ashley Miller, Annalyce Miller, Amber (Alex) Morse, Abbie Miller, Baily (Kory) Klammer, and Colby (Megan) Miller; seven great-grandchildren;  one sister, Carol Miller Moritz (Robert Moritz) of Grinnell; nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Orval Miller; mother, Myrle Miller; in-laws Leona and Vernon (Red) Pehrson; and best friend Harvey Larson.
