Darlene “Trudy” died on Feb. 10, 2022, at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center. She was 89.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 18, at Divine Mercy Parish - St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, at Oakcrest Funeral Services in Algona with a Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 4:45 p.m. Visitation will be continued one hour prior to the funeral Mass at the church. Burial at St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery in Whittemore. The funeral Mass will be livestreamed on Divine Mercy Catholic Parish Facebook page and the graveside service will be livestreamed on Oakcrest Funeral Services’ Facebook page. 

Darlene “Trudy” J. (Thul) Devine was born Feb. 12, 1932, in Algona, the daughter of Michael J. and Clara A. (Dahlhauser) Thul, the second daughter in a family of four boys and three girls. She married Lawrence J. Devine on July 23, 1951, at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Whittemore. She graduated from St. Michaels Academy in Whittemore and also obtained a teaching certificate from Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. She taught in a one room schoolhouse for a year before marrying Mr. Devine. 

Darlene “Trudy” was an excellent seamstress and quilter – making quilts for all her children and grandchildren. Her homemade bread and other bakes good were well-known and enjoyed by everyone!

She is survived by her eight daughters, Rebecca Shock of Waterloo, Mary (John) Nolan of Fort Dodge, Colleen (Darrell) Lazar of Belle Vernon, Pa., Maureen (Bruce) Cahill of West Des Moines, Nancy (Bob) Umsted of Greensboro, N.C.; Kerry (Bill) Pirone of Darien, Conn., Rose (Dave) Schneider of Farley and Patti (Chris) Meyer of Bellingham, Wash.; three sons, Joe (Marcia) Devine of Clinton, Mo., Mike (Kerry) Devine of Cedar Falls and Terry (Debi) Devine of Bettendorf; 39 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; brother, John Thul of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Barb Thul of Phoneix, Ariz., and many nieces and nephews. 

Darlene “Trudy” was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence W. on May 1, 2018; son, Kevin E. Devine on June 30, 1988; son-in-law, Gary Shock on July 20, 2021; her parents; three brothers, Bill, Ed and Jim Thul; and two sisters, Mary Ellen Thul and Angela Hein. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Food for the Poor and Catholic Charities.
