Catherine Joens

August 29, 1935 — March 23, 2021

Catherine Joens, age 85 of Martensdale, formerly of Algona, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 3,  at 10:30 a.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Algona. Services will be livestreamed on Lentz Funeral Home’s Facebook page: Burial will take place at East Lawn Cemetery in Algona. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the services at 10:30 at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Algona. 

Catherine Joens, the daughter of M.J. and Fannie (Johnson) Walding, was born on Aug. 29, 1935, in Ozark, Ala. On Feb. 28, 1953, Catherine was united in marriage to Charles Joens in Ozark, Ala. The couple moved to Algona. Catherine worked as a clerk at Kmart for 15 years and Millers Country Peddler for 15 years. She retired in 2002. 

Catherine was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church. She enjoyed her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, quilting, reading, baking, Alabama football (Roll Tide) and Cubs Baseball. 

Left to cherish Catherine’s memory are her children, Michael Joens of Martensdale, Timothy (Luanne) Joens of Saginaw, Texas, Bruce (Brenda) Joens of Lawton, Okla. and Marion (Albert) Ostrander of Martensdale; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren with one on the way; brother, Jim (Diane) Walding of Ozark, Ala.; sisters, Jane Martin of Ozark, Ala. and Carolyn Threatt of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Lois Walding Pippin of Ozark, Ala., Shirley Joens of Texas and Alene (Joens) Dean of Fairfield, Cali. and Lael Walding of Ozark, Ala. and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. 

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lois Evelyn Joens; parents, M.J and Fannie Walding; husband, Charles Joens; brothers, Dan, Bill, Tom and M.J. Walding; sister-in-law, Eloise Walding; brother-in-law, Louis Martin and great-granddaughter, Genevieve Hope Joens. 

In honor of Catherine, memorials may be directed towards Hillcrest Baptist Church, 1227 Hwy 18 East, Algona, IA 50511.
