Carole Ann Hayes was born in Marshalltown on Jan. 25, 1939, and passed on Sept.1, 2024, in Columbus, Ohio. She was born to the late John Millard Hayes and Thelma Beatrice Kirkpatrick. Preceded in death by her parents and good friend Betty Green. Surviving family includes brother, Kirk Hayes (Julie Hayes) plus nieces and nephews John Bourne Hayes, Kirk Jeffrey Hayes, William Thomas Hayes and Carolyn Jean Hammer.
Carole earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Health, Physical Education & Recreation from Mankato State College, Mankato, Minn. and her Master’s Degree from Ohio State University. She worked 13 years at the YWCA in Columbus as Director of Health, Physical Education & Recreation and coached ladies intramural basketball team. She also worked at Huntington Clothiers & Shirtmakers for 16 years plus Stofcheck Ambulance Service in Delaware, Marion & Marysville for eight years.
Carole was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, but was especially devoted to the United Methodist Church for All People on Parsons Avenue where she served many years as Chair of Church Council, sang in the choir, served on Prayer Shawl Ministry and greeted people at the door. She also volunteered with the Horizon Prison Ministry where she was well loved by the men in blue at Chillicothe Correctional Institution. Her joy, enthusiasm, and spontaneity (including the never-to-be-forgotten robot dance) made everyone feel accepted and loved.
Fun times included living for the Lord, coaching women’s basketball and the men in blue, attending OSU Women’s Basketball games and watching OSU Football games. Her love for nature took her on many camping and canoe trips where she perfected her loon call and enjoyed singing the frog song.
