No. 3 Warriors spoil Bulldogs’ Homecoming

Lead Summary

Third-ranked Sergeant Bluff-Luton scored 27 points in a span of 5:24 in the second half to break open a tight 9-7 contest and went onto spoil Algona’s homecoming festivities in a 36-7 victory over the red-and-black in a game played at Bulldog Stadium on Friday, Sept. 29.
The Bulldogs went toe-to-toe with the high-powered Warriors before that, limiting a squad that came into the game with over 2,000 total yards on the year to under 100 yards in the first half and trailed just 3-0 at intermission.
Neither squad did much in the opening 12 minutes before the home team marched 56 yards downfield in the second quarter but Spencer Holmes’ 40-yard field goal try was just a few feet short.
The visitors then put together its best drive of the first half as they drove down deep into Algona territory but the red-and-black’s defense stiffened and the Warriors had to settle for 31-yard field goal by Colin Margellos with 5:09 showing before halftime.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton took the second half kickoff and promptly marched 64 yards in nine plays to increase its advantage to 9-0 on an eight-yard touchdown run.
