Niel Leek, 63, of Edgewater, Fla., and formerly of Algona, passed away on Nov. 20, 2016, at the Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 11 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona, with the Rev. Tom Schlund officiating. The Hagg-Turner American Legion Post No. 90 and the VFW Post No. 2541 of Algona will conduct military rites. Visitation will be 10 a.m., until service time on Thursday at the church.
Niel Dean Leek, the son of Ranney and Verdell (Riedel) Leek, was born on Sept. 12, 1953, at St. Ann’s Hospital in Algona. Niel attended school in the Algona Public School system and graduated from Algona High School in 1971.
He then enrolled at Iowa Central Community College, where he studied electronics. Niel enlisted in the United States Navy on Dec. 29, 1972, and was released from active duty on Dec. 1, 1976. He then entered the Naval Reserves and was honorably discharged on Dec. 5, 1978.
Niel lived in Florida for many years. He worked in an auto repair shop and then learned the art of setting ceramic tile. He was self-employed for many years. Most recently he worked for a company who contracted to install displays in stores and malls. Niel had an outgoing personality and had many friends. He was an avid fisherman. He loved working with computers and other electronics.
He will be missed by his parents; a brother, Ward (Vickie) Leek of Ames; two nieces, Jennifer (Marc) Peterson and their sons, Carter and Dawson and Melissa (Ron) Serio; several cousins; and many loyal friends.
